Located on five acres of waterfront property in downtown Long Beach, the Aquarium of the Pacific opened in June 1998 to rave reviews. The aquarium features marine life of the Pacific Ocean. More than 47 exhibits represent more than 550 species. The aquarium is beautifully designed, with each species displayed according to which part of the Pacific it comes from. The Kids Cove provides a place for children and adults to touch various animals. A visit to this aquarium is a great day out for kids and adults alike.

The closest beach to LAX stretches for four miles from El Segundo north to Playa Del Rey. In addition to the normal amenities, this beach accommodates overnight campers with fire pits and RV campsites (reservations required). Other special features of this beach include bike rentals, a bike path, fishing, and scuba diving. But perhaps the best and most surprising feature is the quiet and solitude that can be found here despite its proximity to such a large airport.

Hermosa City Beach

Beach tournaments and more
Along Pier Ave at Hermosa Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90254
United States
+1 310 832 1179
This is generally considered one of the top beaches in the L.A. area. Hermosa is quite similar to its neighbor Manhattan Beach, though it has the added bonus of pedestrian-only public spaces teeming with shops, restaurants and people. One of the world's beach sports Meccas, this is the site of both beach volleyball's Hermosa Beach Open at the end of August and surfing's International Surf Festival also in August. Just be advised that summer crowds can be frighteningly large.

Korean Bell of Friendship

Bicentennial gift from Korea
3601 South Gaffey St
(at West 37th St in Angels Gate Park)
Los Angeles, CA 90731
United States
This 17-ton gift serves as a great symbol of close ties between the United States and Korea. It was given to the U.S. by Korea in 1976 as a symbol of friendship. Meant to celebrate the bicentennial of the U.S., the bell also serves to honor the veterans of the Korean War. The huge bell and the pagoda-like structure which supports it are located within the Angels Gate Park and are situated atop a hill overlooking the Port of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean.

This is one of the best beaches around due to its proximity to shops and restaurants. The constant entertainment here on weekends comes in many forms, most notably as volleyball and surfing tournaments. This stretch of sand can claim to be both the inspiration and hangout of the Beach Boys in their early days, as well as the birthplace of beach volleyball. The oldest beach volleyball tournament in the world, the Manhattan Beach Open, is held here annually in late July. Limited free parking, metered parking and parking lots are available.

This pier, recently renovated after a disastrous fire, is one of the most beloved and popular spots in Los Angeles. Hundreds of people come here daily to stroll the 70,000-square-foot landmark located in King Harbor. There are a few small shops and some great fast-food restaurants serving burgers, fish and chips, and more. It is a refreshing spot to watch a sunset before catching dinner in one of the nearby restaurants.

Vincent Thomas Bridge

Not for those who fear heights
430 North Seaside Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90731
United States
+1 310 832 7272 (City Chamber of Commerce)
This bridge is so high that military planes can fly under it. Not so great if you are afraid of heights, but a lot of fun to cross. The bridge spans the main channel between San Pedro and Terminal Island and is 6,500 feet long and rises 185 feet above the water. It is a major commuting route for people traveling between Long Beach and the San Pedro/Torrance area.

Designed in 1946 by Frank Lloyd Wright's son, Lloyd Wright, and featured in a number of films, this glass and stone structure hosts hundreds of weddings every year. Dubbed the "glass church," it was built as a memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg, an 18th century theologian. Surrounded by redwoods and three and a half acres of gardens, the chapel overlooks the Pacific on one of the most scenic bluffs in Southern California, the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Admission is free.
