East L.A., as evidenced by its name, forms the eastern edge of the city and is home to a large part of L.A.'s Latino population. The population nowadays consists mostly of Mexicans and Chicanos (later-generation Mexicans who were born in the United States). The Zoot Suit Riots, during which sailors and posted soldiers struck out against Mexican-American youths, too place here in 1942. Nowadays, it houses a campus of California State University. Famous locals include Oscar de La Hoya, the gold-medal winning boxer of Mexican-American descent. Review © 2009, Wcities |
