Charles, Julien and Louis Arpels along with their brother-in-law Alfred van Cleef, started their first jewelry store in Paris in 1906, and the Rodeo Drive store opened in 1969. It is a high-end jewelery store that caters to the rich and famous. Actors wear the store's creations to the Academy Awards and other events. Recognized for its willingness to create offbeat items for their clients, it has crafted gold birdcages for a Maharaja as well as a zipper made out of baguette diamonds mounted in platinum for the Duchess of Windsor. The store's specialty is the invisible setting; stones set with no visible metal holding them up. The store is also known for flower motifs and four-leaf clovers designed into jewelry. Mother-of-pearl and black onyx items are also featured. Pieces range from $900 to several million. Review © 2009, Wcities |
