The ideal way to visit a town would be with a personal guide (without a group trailing behind), to see the parts you want to see and to stop for a coffee between visits or do some shopping. Well, you can do just that! The office du tourisme de Lyon rents out, for a modest sum, a map showing itineraries throughout the town together with a tape recorder and headset telling you about the Old Lyons, the theatre and basilica in Fourvière and the main monuments on the Presqu'île (in French, English, German, Italian or Spanish). The municipal library in Lyon has a floor reserved solely for very young children. The novels and picture books can be read on the spot or taken into one of the many adjoining reading rooms. But on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the clock strikes three, you can see numerous children rushing for the so-called hour of discovery, a mystery gathering to which adults are not invited. Through games and storytelling sessions, children from 6 to 8 can learn about art and the library's collections. Themes covered include Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and other fables. The library also offers a storytelling hour for 3 to 4 year olds. Review © 2007, Wcities |

2 Rue Louis Carrand 2, rue Louis-Carrand Lyon 69005 France +33 4 7828 9257 |
The Zonzon theater company has recently taken over the Guignol Theater. Without completely doing away with the original spirit of the place, the Zonzons have added some youthful touches to the famous puppets by creating new sets, a new musical production and, above all, some new themes, some of which have been specifically created with adults in mind. Past productions have included "Father Christmas", "Mr. Butterfly Vanishes", and "The Palace". Review © 2007, Wcities |

A tremendous collection of old dolls displayed with furniture and accessories |
Route de Sain Bel Marcy l'Etoile Lyon 69260 France +33 4 7887 8700 |
The Château de la poupée, built in the 16th century by the Laval family, has been converted to house a tremendous collection of dolls, which have been bought from a private collector by the general council of the Rhône. Some of the dolls are extremely old (the majority are 18th and 19th century), but the real interest of the museum lies in its presentation rather than in the vintage of the items on show. Dolls are displayed with furniture and accessories from the 18th century to present day. The museum also shows how the production of the dolls has changed through time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Remains of mediaeval monastery on an island in the Saône river |
Quai Raoul Carrié Quai Clémenceau Lyon 69009 France |
According to Grégoire de Tours (6th century) and Leidrade (8th century) there was a monastery on the Ile Barbe as early as the 5th century, making it, along with St Pierre, one of the oldest monasteries in Lyons. The building of this monastery on an island suited perfectly these first monks who were self-sufficient and preferred to lead a life of asceticism and meditation. There is little left of this Carolingian monastery apart from some bas-reliefs displayed in the Musée Gadagne in Lyons. The monastery prospered during the Middle Ages but was closed during the Revolution and then sold. Although all that is left today is the Norman abbey church of Notre Dame (dating from end 11th-early 12th centuries), the excursion to the island is pleasant; there is a park with games for children on the Southern part whilst in the North charming houses and private mansions have been preserved. Take the pont de l'île along the Saône North of Lyon (quai Carrié on the right bank, quai Clémenceau on the left bank). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Here comes Guignol! |
1 Place du Petit-Collège Lyon 69005 France +33 4 7842 0361 |
Located within the Gadagne museum, this museum's exhibit is all about France's best-known puppet - Guignol, created in Lyon in 1908 by the silk worker Laurent Mourguet. Mourguet was the inspiration behind Lyon's satirical street theatre, thanks to his three creations - Guignol, Madelon and Gnafron, who poked fun at the forces of law and order and the king. The museum depicts the evolution of Guignol and Company, both through their performances and the ways in which they were made. Additional puppets from around the world are also on display. 6 Place Bellecour Place Bellecour Lyon 69002 France +33 4 7277 6969 http://www.lyon-france.com visits@lyon-france.com |
France started importing silk in the 15th century and in the 16th century Lyon was chosen as the place where silk manufacturing would be based. J.M. Jacquard invented a new loom at the end of the 18th century and all the silk workers, known locally as "canuts," moved into one area: Croix-Rousse. Special buildings were constructed on the hill to house the bulky looms. In some flats in the Croix-Rousse, you can still see these very narrow huts that were built below the ceilings of the former workshops. Contact the Tourist Office for guided tour information.
