Bibliothèque municipale de la Part-Dieu

Storytelling hour
30 Boulevard Marius Vivier-Merle
Lyon 69003
France
+33 4 7862 1800
http://www.bm-lyon.fr/
The municipal library in Lyon has a floor reserved solely for very young children. The novels and picture books can be read on the spot or taken into one of the many adjoining reading rooms. But on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the clock strikes three, you can see numerous children rushing for the so-called “hour of discovery”, a mystery gathering to which adults are not invited. Through games and storytelling sessions, children from 6 to 8 can learn about art and the library's collections. Themes covered include Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and other fables. The library also offers a storytelling hour for 3 to 4 year olds.

The muséum d'Histoire Naturelle runs workshops and themed tours for children of primary school age up to secondary school pupils. The trips are based around the museum's permanent exhibitions - prehistoric times, insects, flora and fauna, Egyptian antiquities and anthropology in the widest sense of the word. They are tailored to each age group. The young ones (4-8 years) might begin with the Prehistoric era, moving on to Egyptian civilisation, and then insects, using stories and games as an introduction. Games to acquaint children with the various collections. 9-10 year olds are introduced to Anthropology and the mysterious world of animals. Workshops offer them the opportunity to make a cast of a fossil and to understand cave art. 11-14 year olds are given guided tours of the museum. The workshops are identical to those offered to 9-10 year olds but they can also travel through time. They will also be able to make their own cave art on a piece of reconstructed cave. 15-17 year olds will be able to travel back to the time of 'Cro Magnon' man and examine fossils and objects in an attempt to look at regional flora and fauna, Aanthropology and Egyptology. The temporary exhibitions are also used for educational workshops (please inquire). Admission costs 10F (EUR 1.52); for the workshop, it costs 20F (EUR 3.04); museum entrance is extra. Parents who accompany their children will also benefit from concessions. Lyon Opera is also organising the "Préludiques" for children aged 6 upwards. The season's works are introduced to the children in a lighthearted manner in a 45 minute presentation. Entry is free. Ask at the Box Office for details of the programme.

Eclipses' have encouraged individuals across Europe to look at the sky in a different light. Children's minds are filled with all kinds of new ideas since the eclipse; understanding the stars and their alignment to the planets, imagining themselves in space like the little prince (le petit prince). Who could forget that Lyon is the birthplace of Saint-Exupery, writer of Le Petit Prince? The planetarium at Vaulx-en-Velin has various programmes for all age groups; sessions oscillate between storytelling and science, using the latest in technology.

Théâtre des Jeunes Années

For children
23 Rue de Bourgogne
Lyon 69009
France
+33 4 7253 1515
This theatre is for a younger audience. In fact, children as young as 3 can develop their awareness, intelligence and curiosity thanks to original productions (see workshops of Théâtre des Jeunes Années). This is a splendid concept, and a very good idea for bringing a youthful audience into the theatre.
