A personalised guided tour of Lyons at your own pace
6 Place Bellecour
Place Bellecour
Lyon 69002
France

The ideal way to visit a town would be with a personal guide (without a group trailing behind), to see the parts you want to see and to stop for a coffee between visits or do some shopping. Well, you can do just that! The office du tourisme de Lyon rents out, for a modest sum, a map showing itineraries throughout the town together with a tape recorder and headset telling you about the Old Lyons, the theatre and basilica in Fourvière and the main monuments on the Presqu'île (in French, English, German, Italian or Spanish).

There is a lot of water in Lyon, but you definitely can't swim in the Rhône! Enthusiastic swimmers and refugees from the Summer heat can go to the Centre Nautique on the banks of the Rhône, which is open from June 16th to September 5th. There are two large pools, a sun terrace, a water slide, areas for ping-pong or volleyball and, naturally, a snack bar.

The French Alpine Club (CAF for those who know it well) is a true institution in France for all mountain activities. A branch is to be found in all the main towns - it truly is a pioneer in its field. There's nowhere more reliable for organising trips, whether they be for walking, climbing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing or rambling, canyoning, mountain biking, paragliding and mountaineering. In short, anything which has something to do with mountains.

The Zonzon theater company has recently taken over the Guignol Theater. Without completely doing away with the original spirit of the place, the Zonzons have added some youthful touches to the famous puppets by creating new sets, a new musical production and, above all, some new themes, some of which have been specifically created with adults in mind. Past productions have included "Father Christmas", "Mr. Butterfly Vanishes", and "The Palace".

Here comes Guignol!
1 Place du Petit-Collège
Lyon 69005
France
+33 4 7842 0361
Located within the Gadagne museum, this museum's exhibit is all about France's best-known puppet - Guignol, created in Lyon in 1908 by the silk worker Laurent Mourguet. Mourguet was the inspiration behind Lyon's satirical street theatre, thanks to his three creations - Guignol, Madelon and Gnafron, who poked fun at the forces of law and order and the king. The museum depicts the evolution of Guignol and Company, both through their performances and the ways in which they were made. Additional puppets from around the world are also on display.

6 Place Bellecour
Place Bellecour
Lyon 69002
France
+33 4 7277 6969
http://www.lyon-france.com
France started importing silk in the 15th century and in the 16th century Lyon was chosen as the place where silk manufacturing would be based. J.M. Jacquard invented a new loom at the end of the 18th century and all the silk workers, known locally as "canuts," moved into one area: Croix-Rousse. Special buildings were constructed on the hill to house the bulky looms. In some flats in the Croix-Rousse, you can still see these very narrow huts that were built below the ceilings of the former workshops. Contact the Tourist Office for guided tour information.
