Like most large cities, the ancient capital of Gaul offers a wide range of accommodation, with hotels to suit every taste and pocket. To find your way around, it helps to think of the town in terms of three distinct parts separated by two rivers; the rive droite (right bank) of the Saône (comprising Old Lyon and Vaise), the Presqu'île (the centre of town) and the rive gauche (left bank) of the Rhône (comprising the eastern districts).

The Right Bank of the Saône (5ème and 9ème Arrondissements)

Here in the heart of Old Lyon you will find the cream of the city's four-star hotels: Cour des Loges, Tour Rose, and Villa Florentine. All three have a very particular charm - a mixture of luxury, originality and beauty of design. A more functional but highly recommendable affair is the Terminus Saint Paul, which is well located and well kept. Further North in the Vaise quarter, two very different establishments stand out; Saphir for its tranquility and the range of services offered, and Hôtel du Tourisme for its location (overlooking the Saône) and its unbeatable prices.

Presqu'île (1er, 2ème and 4ème Arrondissements)

This is where most of Lyon's cultural and commercial activity takes place, and the choice of hotels is as large as it is varied. In the Perrache quarter to the south, Bristol Frantour and Clarine are notable for their excellent value for money. In the central Bellecour quarter, the Royal and Sofitel hotels are the undisputed kings of luxury. Two rather more affordable establishments, noteworthy for their comfort and strategic location, are the Grand Hôtel de la Paix and the Hôtel Arte, both off the rue de la République. In the Terreaux and Croix-Rousse districts, the hotels bearing those names - (Hôtel St Pierre des Terreaux and Hôtel de la Croix-Rousse) - offer the best prices for a more than reasonable service.

Rive Gauche of the Rhône (3ème, 6ème, 7ème and 8ème Arrondissements)

This part of town buzzes with activity, and with good reason. It encompasses the commercial and legal centres, theuniversities, the Cité Internationale, theparc de la Tête d'Or, and the largest hospitals in the region. Hotels oriented towards business people abound in the Part-Dieu quarter; Méridien Part-Dieu and Mercure are some of the most luxurious, while Créqui and Ibis are among the cheapest (Ibis is clearly preferable.) For those wishing to stay near the hospitals, the Laennec is recommendable for its calm surroundings and interior design. An unmissable port of call further east in the chic brotteaux quarter is Patio Morand, a peaceful and charming old villa. The magnificent Hilton situated in the Cité Internationale is the best option for those in search of peace and quiet, luxury, and proximity to the parc de la Tête d'Or.

Other Types of Accommodation

You can of course find types of accommodation other than hotels, such as the Youth Hostel.

From the Perrache quay you can quickly go to the Gerland quartier as well as the peninsula.

Lyon 69002
France
+33 4 7892 9191
http://www.hotel-saintantoine.fr/
Awarded 2 stars and a Palme by the Tourist Office. In a small road linking with la place des Jacobins on the banks of the Saône this hotel is surrounded by pubs and nightclubs. The area can be a little noisy at the weekend but it is very popular nevertheless. As well as being a paradise for night owls there is nearby the peaceful Place des Celestins and a theater as well as the docks with their markets where fruit and salads are replaced by books in the afternoon. Take advantage of the opportunity and buy an old copy of Balzac and get a taste of the other side of the river in one of Vieux-Lyon's bars.

Croix-Rousse

Lyon
France
The Croix-Rousse is known as the former den of the silk workers, which Lyon was famous for until the nineteenth century. The buildings were constructed in the nineteenth century to house the large weaving looms invented by Joseph-Marie Jacquard. The density and shape of the buildings transformed the Croix Rousse into a maze scattered with passageways, which gave them their name - the traboules. The slopes of the hill are also home to many restaurants and bars, where all types of cuisine are to be found. The Croix-Rousse hill became the home of the artists, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts was built on it. By taking an alleyway you will undoubtedly find one of hill's special places like the Amphithéatre gallo-romain where the first Lyonaise martyrs were sacrificed, or the Jardin des Chartreux where there is a superb view over the town.

People who are looking for a hotel in this area which is not too expensive should not be put off by the name of this hotel. It is however a pleasant establishment in an extremely good location. It is located on one of the quietest stretches of rue Edouard Herriot. It is slightly set back from the road itself, next to the small Place Francisque Régaud; it is also only a few minutes walk from the Terreaux and from the banks of the Saône.

This hotel was awarded 4 stars and a palm by the Lyon Tourist Office. For several years the Cité Internationale has been a hotspot for economic, political and cultural gatherings, so it is only natural that a hotel with this prestigious name would be found here. The Hilton fits in perfectly, as its modern architecture compliments that of the other buildings of the area. Inside these buildings you can visit the Contemporary Art Museum, go and see the casino, or take advantage of the incredible acoustics inside the immense auditoriums of the UGC cinema.

The façade of this impressive building gives an image of a luxurious interior: under a majestic porch, a red carpet awaits and a doorman welcomes each visitor. At this hotel, you are the star and the staff is pleased to cater to all of your desires. What's more, the location is a hundred meters from the place Bellecour where shops, cinemas and restaurants make up the majority of the neighborhood. Certain might not be so keen on the fact that the establishment borders on the main North-South motorway.

4 stars and an Office of Tourism 'Palm.' You will notice this large ensemble on the corner of the largest Place in Lyon straight away. On the ground floor, its restaurant ("Le Petit Prince" of course!), on the other floors are the room which either have a view of the Place or the Rue de la Barre. This establishment is spruced up and luxurious (the four stars make this necessary!) and its location is perfect. If you go down the Rue de la Barre you are immediately on the Rue de la République, and if you cross the place Bellecour (don't forget to salute the statue of Louix XIV on horse back) then Bonaparte Bridge and you will be in the heart of old Lyon on its cobblestone streets.

The St. Pierre occupies an old building with very beautiful architecture, which goes out on to a large road that leads directly to the place des Terreaux. The traffic is sometimes a bit heavy here, but the quartier is still attractive given that it has the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Opéra, restaurants, and bars nearby. The rooms are very comfortable and the welcome is beyond reproach. The quality is excellent for the price you pay—perhaps the best in the area.

The Croix-Rousse has its own identity and life here is rather different from elsewhere in town: it is less stressful and the residents are more communicative. The Croix Rousse hotel is situated right in the middle of this district and is not at all out of keeping with its simple but pleasant surroundings. The decoration and furnishings are unpretentious and functional. If your room overlooks the marketplace, you will be able to enjoy a picturesque slice of life in the Croix-Rousse district.

Received a two star rating from the office of tourism. Patio Morand has oodles of charm. Firstly, it dates back to the Age of Enlightenment and its old stones highlight this noble relationship. Secondly, it has a lovely patio area and a superb terrace and it is neither too near to nor too far away from the sights of the city centre. An excellent compromise between calm and hectic city life.

Presquile

Lyon
France
This is what we call the spit of the land, which stretches from the Rhône and the Saône to the foot of the Croix-Rousse hill. This is the commercial centre of Lyon with the Rue de la République and the Rue Victor Hugo which give out onto the place Bellecour, a meeting place for many people of Lyon. Stylish shops are to be found around the Rue Edouard Herriot, the Rue Comte houses the majority of Lyon's antiques dealers and the Rue Mercière boasts all styles of restaurants. Why not take a stroll along the adjacent streets instead of hovering over the most attractive shop window? South of the Presqu'île there is the Saint Martin d'Ainay, one of the rare Roman churches preserved in Lyon, as well as the very interesting Musée des Tissus, which is in an eighteenth century townhouse.

The Rue de la Lainerie is the northern extension of the most frequented pedestrian route in old Lyon: la Rue St Jean. This historical quartier is very agreeable and there are lots of touristy things that you can do, as the surrounding area is full of monuments and attractions of every type (museums, old towns, café-theatres, restaurants etc.). Go and pay a visit to the Smoking Dog, it has a truly natural pub ambience.

Terreaux

Lyon
France
The Terraux area takes its name from the old moat which protected the north of the town in the Middle Ages. Today it includes the surrounding areas of the place des Terreaux, which was redone by Daniel Buren in 1994. This quarter has many monuments like the wonderful Opéra de Lyon, which was renovated by Jean Nouvel, the Palais Saint Pierre which today houses Lyon's Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Town Hall. The Rue Sainte Catherine which runs along the north of the Place des Terreaux is known for its many pubs, but it is not necessarily the most pleasant part of the quarter!

The Saône

Big River
Quai Funcheron
(A7)
Lyon
France
There is a statue in place Bellecour that represents the Saône river as a sensual, well-rounded woman. Don't let this fool you as the Saône is certainly more forceful than its neighbour the Rhône when the elements get going. If you go to the Museum of Gallo-Roman civilisation, you will see how long it took for the river to establish its course. These days the banks of the Saône are more attractive and stroller-friendly than those of the Rhône. A craft market is held every Sunday morning on the left bank from quai Fulchiron to quai Romain Rolland. On the right bank, second-hand book sellers gather every weekend (if the weather is fine) at quai de la Pêcherie and quai St Antoine. One of Lyon's biggest outdoor markets stretches from beyond the book sellers up to pont Bonaparte. For those who prefer walking and swimming to bargain hunting, we recommend you go northwards up the Saône towards Ile Barbe. There are several riverside restaurants (known as "guingettes") where you can sample fried fish and frogs' legs.

Well, so is this park that covers more than 105 hectares and has a zoo, a 5-hectare rose garden and enormous greenhouses filled with exotic species—not to mention a mysterious island! This park is considered to be the "lung" of Lyon and is so popular that sometimes during weekends, joggers, families with push chairs and cyclists have trouble finding enough space. University Buildings

Temples of knowledge
15-18 Quai Claude Bernard
Lyon 69007
France
At the end of the XIX century (1876-1898), Abraham Hirsch designed and supervised the construction on the left bank of the Rhône of the two buildings which were to house the faculties of pharmacy and medicine. The sober, neoclassical style and the layout of the buildings are reminiscent of the prestigious Hôtel Dieu which Soufflot developed not far away on the right bank! Each of these buildings has a façade suited to the flow of the river as well as a central dome shaped building ! Well, does that remind you of anything? These two buildings nowadays form part of the universities of Lyons2 and Lyons3. A sad incident recently destroyed the major part of these two buildings (16-18 quai C. Bernard): on the 13th of June 1999, a fire destroyed the dome and the floors of the central building which housed the university library! A considerable loss since only part of the original stock was saved. Over 200000 works from the XIX-XX century were lost forever.
