Wine, Wine and More Wine |
19 Place Bellecour (Lyon Tourist Office) Lyon 69002 France +33 4 7277 6969 |
For Bacchus worshippers, the longest night of the year is the third Wednesday in November, when the famous Beaujolais wine goes on sale. This event transforms the city of Lyon into one vast wine-tasting cellar. All bars, restaurants and off-licences put up posters and signs to proclaim the arrival of the divine beverage and many of them offer free tastings. By Thursday night, spirits are high (for obvious reasons) even in the most respectable of places. The locals go to great lengths to ensure that this particular tradition is upheld. When Lyon comes alive |
19 Place Bellecour (Lyon Tourist Office) Lyon 69002 France +33 4 7277 6969 http://www.lyon-france.com/ |
The statue of the Virgin Mary on Fourvière Hill is one of Lyon's most famous landmarks. Its erection is celebrated on the 8th of December every year, commemorated by the thousands who light lanterns in their windows. This celebration, which the locals prefer to call Illuminations, has lost much of its religious symbolism, but whatever the motivation, it is a tradition, which endures and brings together the entire community. On of the biggest fairs in France |
Eurexpo (Eurexpo) Lyon 69500 France +33 4 7222 3344 http://www.foiredelyon.com |
This fair is situated southwest of Lyon in Chassieu, at the Eurexpo complex; public transportation is available. Its geographical location is associated with the creation of the Foires Franches (free fairs) by Charles VII in the 15th century, which made Lyon an international crossroads for business. Even if things have changed a lot since then, the atmosphere here is just as frantic as it was in the Renaissance trade fairs. It is huge, and brings together a great number of exhibitors from all professional sectors as well as vast crowds of visitors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dance, music, every style is covered. |
6 Rue de l'AntiQuaille (Théâtre antique de Fourvière) Lyon 69005 France +33 4 7238 8190 http://www.nuits-de-fourviere.... |
Would Lyons be jealous of its neighbours? Who knows? Anyway, following Vienne's footsteps, the Roman theatre rediscovers every summer its original function and becomes an eminently cultural and popular area. For a month and a half, a new performance breathes life every evening back into the Roman stage of Fourvière. It could be dance or music, every style is welcome as long as it is of high quality. The program is always appetising and it is difficult to keep away every evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |
