These celebrations commemorate the population of Madrid's resistance to Napoleon's invasion on May 2, 1808. You'll see some of the most impressive outdoor festivities in Malasaa district. Every year on the night of May 1 there's a spectacular fireworks display in Jardines de las Vistillas (Vistillas Gardens) and a traditional military display in Plaza de Oriente during the afternoon. This is the stretch of Paseo de la Castellana that connects Plaza de Colón to Cibeles Fountain. It's spacious and attractive with garden boulevards between the sidewalks. On your way, you'll pass by some famous landmarks worth visiting, like the Banco Hipotecario building (number 10), El Espejo Café and Café Gijón.
