Madrid offers visitors a full range of accommodation options, from the most luxurious five-star hotels to small affordable hostels.

Grand Hotels

The Ritz, which opened in 1910, is widely considered to be the city's most elegant hotel. The Palace has always been popular with writers, performers and politicians, like Ernest Hemingway, Ava Gardner, Henry Kissinger and the Rolling Stones. The Back Street Boys have been recent guests. It's worth going in, even if it's just for a coffee, to admire the magnificent decor. Both these grand hotels are located conveniently close to Madrid's greatest attractions: the Prado Museum; the Thyssen-Bornesmiza Museum; the Reina Sofía Museum, the Botanical Gardens and Retiro Park.

Luxury Hotels

The luxury modern Hotel Villamagna caters for international performers like Prince and Julio Iglesias. You'll find it on Paseo de la Castellana close to the Calle Ortega y Gasset, home of Versace, Armani and other international fashion designer outlets.

Comfortable Hotels

There are several comfortable hotels in the area around Gran Vía, Madrid's version of Broadway. The city's legendary street-life takes place here, in and around the many restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatres and shops. The Tryp Washington is on Gran Vía, and the nearby Plaza de Chueca has the inexpensive Hotel Monaco. The Crowne Plaza is located in the Plaza de España and the bedrooms offer great views of the Royal Palace. A discotheque, Arena, is just a short walk away.

Business Travellers

Novotel Campo de las Naciones and the Sofitel Madrid Aeropuerto offer business travellers comfortable accommodation near the airport and the IFEMA trade centre. Both have golf courses nearby.

Peace and Quiet

If you're looking for peace and quiet, try the tastefully decorated Residencia El Viso, located in a leafy residential area. Another peaceful option is the Hotel Orfila, a charming five-star hotel with an excellent restaurant that's located in the heart of the city.

Other Options

The NH Alcalá is close to Retiro Park, which is a great place if you fancy jogging or strolling among the trees and lakes.

The shopping district around Calle Serrano has several affordable hotels belonging to the NH chain: the NH Lagasca and NH Balboa, for example.

Book into the Hotel Wellington or the Tryp Reina Victoria during the bullfighting season and you might end up rubbing shoulders with a top bullfighter. The Tryp Reina Victoria is beside the Teatro Español in the Plaza de Santa Ana, where you'll also find a wide selection of bars, restaurants and pubs. The Hotel Meli Castilla in the north of the city, near the conference centre on Paseo de la Castellana and Real Madrid's football stadium, Santiago Bernabu, offers excellent conference facilities and accommodation for business executives.

Oldest Hotel

The Hotel Paris is the oldest hotel in the city. It opened in 1872 and continues to provide cheap, basic accommodation with a sense of history, close to the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza de Santa Ana in the old town.

El Retiro

Madrid
Spain
Escape the city in huge, lush, green Parque del Buen Retiro (Good Retreat Park). Do what the Madrileños do: buy a bag of sunflower seeds or kikos (fried corn kernels), dress up in your Sunday best and stroll down the long paseo (promenade) in front of the pond overlooked by a statue of Alfonso XII. On sunny days, you can rent a rowboat (watch out for the pesky splashers!), or enjoy the numerous magicians, folk musicians, Michael Jackson wannabes and poets (who will reject any donations under EUR1 pesetas!) performing on the promenade. The best way to enter the park is from Calle Alcalá, passing the 19th-century Puerta de Alcalá. Beware of pickpockets in this area, especially at night. Right outside the park boundaries is the elegant district of Salamanca, which features several up-scale boutiques and art galleries.

Gran Via

Madrid
Spain
Traffic surges through this long, noisy avenue, along with swarms of locals and tourists. Look up and admire the eccentric 20th-century architecture built during the Franco era. You'll find every style represented, from neo-baroque to art deco. As you follow the Gran Vía all the way from Calle Alcalá to Plaza de España, take note of the grand old-fashioned movie houses, some of the last of their kind, which continue hiring artists to paint original movie posters. Other buildings to watch out for are the elegantly domed Edificio Metrópolis at the Alcalá intersection, and the monstrous Telefónica building halfway down.

The Me Madrid, formerly known as the Hotel Reina Victoria, has undergone some serious renovations. Located on the once historic haunt of Spain's most famous matadors for over 60 years, it has taken a 180 degree turn in style. Fashionable and chic decor has replaced the classic Spanish motif of the interior, and elaborate bars and restaurants have been added to ensure a booming social center in this rockin' bubble. The sleek design of the rooms feature contemporary furniture, maxi bars, and spectacular views of the Plaza Santa Ana or Plaza del Angel. If you want to experience a more rowdy side of Spain, this is the place to be.

This one-star hotel is very popular with British tourists in particular. The building dates from the early 1900s and many of the bedrooms are period pieces. Each of them is decorated in a different style. Room 120 is covered in 1920s frescoes and room 127 is furnished with antiques from the same period. King Alfonso XIII once stayed here. It offers good value for money and a great location, close to Gran Via and Plaza de Chueca, with its gay cafes and bars. The bar-cafeteria serves breakfast for EUR3.

Paseo de Castellana

Madrid
Spain
This long tree-lined boulevard is the backbone of Madrid. It's so long that it even has three official names. Come here to relax, take a coffee break or sightsee. Starting from Atocha train station, wander up shady Paseo del Prado and take in two of Madrid's most famous art museums: the Prado and the Thyssen Bornemisza. The area also features the Real Jardín Botánico (Royal Botanical Gardens), home of many exotic plants. Continue on until you reach Plaza de Cibeles and the grand Palacio de Telecomunicaciones (post office). Suddenly, the boulevard turns into the Paseo de Recoletos, a great place to take a stroll. Or, better still, stop at Café Gijón, where Spain's intellectuals hang out, for a café con leche (white coffee). Check the local listings for times and dates of the book and craft fairs that take place along this part of the Castellana. Continuing on, you'll pass the massive square and monument to Columbus, and the Bibilioteca Nacional (National Library). At this point, the street officially becomes Paseo de la Castellana, a busy commercial area. Here you'll find Real Madrid's football stadium, Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, and more banks.

Paseo de la Castellana

Madrid's most famous avenue
Paseo de la Castellana
Madrid, Madrid 28046
Spain
Madrid's greatest and grandest avenue runs between Plaza de Colón and Plaza de Castilla. During the 1950s and 1960s this became an exclusive residential district when the aristocracy and wealthy upper-middle classes decided to move in. Today, their lovely palaces and mansions stand side by side with the headquarters of foreign and national banks. These skyscrapers - Europa, Windsor, Torre Picasso and Puerta de Europa - offer an overview of styles in contemporary architecture since the 1960s. Look out for the ABC building, which is decorated in fabulous ceramic tiles, and the Palacio de Congresos, with its murals designed by Miró. Come on October 12 and you'll see Spanish army's spectacular military parade pass by.

You just have to look at the number of people lying on the grass alongside the fountains or resting on the park benches to know this is a popular spot. The most prominent feature is the statue dedicated to Spain's most famous writer, Miguel de Cervantes, that depicts his two principal characters - Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. At Christmas time, the area towards Calle Princesa fills with stalls selling all types of gifts and decorative objects. You can't help but notice the two enormous mid-20th century skyscrapers here: El Edificio España and La Torre de Madrid.

Plaza de Santa Ana

A favourite meeting place
Puerta del Sol
Madrid, Madrid 28012
Spain
Come here any weekend night and you'll find the place buzzing. It's a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike as it's close to Puerta del Sol and surrounded by nightlife venues. It has a statue of playwright Calderón de la Barca in the centre and garden areas round about. The neoclassical Teatro Español building and the art deco Hotel Victoria (a favourite with bullfighters) are both here. As for drinks, the Cervecería Alemana is a good place for a relaxing chat, and then there's the Villarosa (which featured in Pedro Almodóvar's movie High Heels), once a flamenco dance hall, it's now a trendy bar. The history of the square dates back to the times of Joseph Bonaparte who demolished Santa Ana Convent to open up this space.

Considered one of the world's most important art galleries, it exhibits paintings by Goya, Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán, El Greco, Ribera, Titian, Boticelli, Tintoretto, El Bosco, Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin and Durer. Carlos III commissioned Juan de Villanueva to design this beautiful building, which was converted into an art gallery in 1819. In July of 2005 the Council of Ministers approved a EUR44.6 million expansion plan which adds 50% more of the museums total space, and allows for 500 more works of the permanent collection to be showcased. On October 30th 2007 the annex opened with a collection of 19th century Spanish artwork which enabled the Prado to reclaim its glory as a crown jewel of Europe. Come for the art; stay for the architecture.

Founded in 1902, the club's teams had to play in a variety of venues throughout the city until this stadium was built in 1947. It holds a capacity crowd of 75342 and has become world famous due to Real's success in international competitions over the years. It is named after the chairman of the Board of Directors, Santiago Bernabéu, who had the vision to borrow the money to buy this plot of land and start building. At that time it was the most modern stadium in the country and it has since undergone various expansion and improvement projects. You can visit the club's museum that is open daily, except Monday, to find out about its history, see the trophy room and tread on the hallowed turf itself.

Sun Gate

Literally the centre of Spain
Plaza Puerta del Sol
Madrid, Madrid 28013
Spain
Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) is the most popular and commercial area in the old town. Five hundred years ago it was just another city gate with an image of the sun drawn on it, hence its name. Nowadays, the square is famous for being the center of the national road network. The plaque on the pavement outside the old Post Office building denotes 'kilometer 0'. The distance between Madrid and every other part of Spain is measured from here. Thousands of revelers gather in the square once a year to await the chimes of the clock that officially announces the New Year.

This is one of the capital's most sophisticated and luxurious five-star hotels. Despite the modern façade, the interior is decorated in the style associated with Carlos IV's reign. The bedrooms have been designed to provide lots of light, warmth and comfort, as well as modern conveniences. The furniture is of the highest quality and works of art adorn the walls and public spaces. It is located in the shopping center, on Calle Serrano, close to El Corte Inglés department store. The hotel restaurant, Le Divellec, offers superb seafood; there is also a trendy piano bar with live music.

The rich and famous have always been attracted to this elegant and exclusive hotel. The large and luxuriously furnished bedrooms are comfortably decorated. There are even extra-luxurious suites for the most demanding clients. Join the jet set for drinks or dinner in the bar, the restaurant or the glass-domed rotunda. The building itself is an example of classical French design that opened as a hotel in 1912, located in between the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
