The wines on offer mainly come from La Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It's located on the first floor of a central office block next to where there was once a pelota (handball) or frontón court, hence the name. Calle Cava Baja 11

A typical Madrid tavern-cum-restaurant that serves excellent grilled meats cooked over a barbecue burning Mediterranean oak wood for an extra-special flavour. The manager is an Argentine, hence the grilled meats. But the chef is a Basque, so you can expect specialities like anchovies A la Bilbaína (served hot with vinegar and garlic), sea bream, sea bass, anchovy and baby lettuce salad or tuna steaks with spicy Piquillo red peppers. The private dining room (seating 20) downstairs in the basement retains a surprising historical treasure - remains of the old city walls dating from 1085.

The versatile premises are conducive to have breakfast, enjoy an appetizer, or to simply enjoy a glass of wine. The decoration calls for attention because of the combination of antiquities: collections of clocks, Bohemian crystal lamps and marble floors. The restaurant has different themes and many people frequent it. The food is Mediterranean, with specialties like Ostrich medallions, carpaccio, rice and salad of avocados, mango and fresh cheese. Other dishes that you can try are Ox Carpaccio and fish or sirloin with compote of apple and garlic. They have good desserts, like Apple Cake or sherbets. Pure Andalusian olive oil and sherry are the two favoured staples in this kitchen. They're used profusely to help create delicately flavoured Mediterranean masterpieces. The house speciality is cod prepared in a number of different ways. Other excellent dishes include lobster salad with fine herbs, foie gras with sherry and berries and marinated sardines with tarragon. The desserts are just as inventive. Try the Sherry Fig Cake or Apple Pie with Leche Frita (fried milk pudding) and Orange Sauce. As for the wines, they're mainly examples from Rioja (Bernia 86) and Ribera del Duero (Hacienda Monasterio, Viña Mayor), without forgetting the rich Amontillados and pale Finos from Jerez. The dining room is appropriately olive green with bright yellow linen.

Top quality fish and shellfish are what you're served here, as you would expect from a restaurant that has been awarded a Michelin star. The chef is confident enough to keep his dishes simple and delicate. The house speciality is tender sole, although it's worth trying other delicacies like Aguinaga eels, oven-roasted sea bass, red bream, monkfish and salmon salad or seafood soup. Wash it all down with a choice of subtle white wines from Albariño, Rueda, Rioja or even Catalan or Navarra wines. The excellent house variety comes from Cacabelos. The decor is in keeping with the name and the cuisine, all fishing nets, oars, lamps and other seafaring objects.

The interior is elegantly decorated in pure Japanese minimalist style. There's a sushi bar for those on a tighter budget. Portions in the main dining room are meagre compared to other places and the prices are high. You can reserve one of the private dining rooms and there is valet parking available too. Some of Madrid's best fresh fish and shellfish are served in this simple and homely restaurant. That's because the owner also has a stall in Mercamadrid, the capital's most important fresh produce market, and therefore gets direct access to best ingredients available. You'll be dazzled by the choice: clams, mussels, oysters and percebes (goose barnacles) are just a few of the shellfish varieties that are delicious steamed. The fillets of sole could not be more tender. There's no red meat on offer, only Iberian cured ham. The interior is decorated with a nautical theme. Even though it's a fairly simple place, the prices are high.

In this elegant restaurant you will enjoy an imaginative menu with dishes such as Cream of Artichoke, Eggplant and Pistachio, Cuitlacoche quesadilla (mushroom of the corn) or other Mexican food. Others dishes include fish, free-range eggs, lamb, and Greek yoghurt. Interestingly, the chef worked with Abraham Garcia of the famous Viridiana. They also have a good wine list. The environment is pleasant to pass a good evening.
