Bodegón

Imaginative Basque-French cuisine
Pinar, 15
Madrid, Madrid 28006
Spain
+34 91 562 8844
A well-known restaurant on Madrid's culinary scene offering a menu that combines classic French haute cuisine with creative ideas from the Basque Country. For starters, try the lobster and vegetable salad. House specialities include various preparations of duck and fillet of turbot. Other substantial dishes, such as veal a la Zuberoa, Club Ranero cod or red mullet are available. Their citrus fruit pastries with banana ice-cream is an ideal dessert. The wine list has an excellent selection of Spanish varieties to choose from. You're in pleasant and elegant surroundings with plush upholstery and carpeting, and the walls are decorated with fine paintings of northern landscapes by respected artists. Valet parking is available.

Cacharrería

Eat interesting food in an agreeable atmosphere
Morería, 9
Madrid, Madrid 28005
Spain
+34 91 365 3930
A popular refuge for the hungry intelligentsia during the turbulent political atmosphere of the 1980s, it continues to attract the same sort of people who came here then. It's a welcoming sort of place with a bit of a decadent feel to it. As for the food, it's imaginatively prepared and presented, and the menu features dishes like courgette and prawn pie and tuna steaks cooked with leeks and sparkling wine along with grilled meats and fish. The wine list offers a reduced selection of fine wines. There's a private dining room available and a sampler menu at EUR30.05.

Comité

Good snails and steak tartar
Plaza de San Amaro, 8
Madrid, Madrid 28020
Spain
+34 91 571 8711
A small, intimate, and elegantly decorated French-style bistro that takes pride in serving imaginative fresh fish dishes and tempting desserts. The house specialities are steamed snails and steak tartar. The set menu of the day is an excellent value for money and there's an extensive wine list to choose from. Look around at the walls and you'll see photos of famous people who have eaten here. Lots of plants and a judiciously placed mirror make the dining room look bigger than it really is. Flowers are always attractively arranged on the 12 tables available. Executives in their mid-30s to mid-40s tend to come for lunch and a selection of the city's "beautiful people" grace it with their presence at night.

The desserts are outstanding, especially the Cappuccino Cake and soufflés. It has a great selection of French wines to choose from. Its only faults are the lack of space and the proximity of tables to each other. There's another branch on Claudio Coello, 41 (+34 91 577 7349).

Madrid, Madrid 28010
Spain
+34 91 310 2611
This French restaurant has been open for business for over 30 years serving up some wonderful dishes like Wild Mushrooms with Scrambled Eggs, Steak Tartare, Beef Fondue and Spinach and Salmon Pancackes. However, it's most famous for its homemade Pate de Foie Gras. Dominique Garde is the experienced chef in charge of the kitchen. You can choose from an excellent selection of wines. You would have to book ahead, as there are only six tables. Once inside, you'll be surrounded by a delightful interior of wrought-iron screens, flower-print wallpaper, salmon-coloured floor tiles and exposed wood.
