Long-established Japanese restaurant |
Echegaray, 3 Madrid, Madrid 28014 Spain +34 91 429 5720 |
Ever since it opened with lots of media attention in 1974, this Japanese restaurant has been attracting a young clientele for sushi, sashimi and tempura (fish, shellfish or vegetables, battered and deep fried). However, the star dish of the menu is Sukiyaki, a type of Oriental meat and vegetable stew that's great shared amongst a group of friends. As for drinks, you can try Japanese specialities like umeshu (plum wine), sake and asahi beer or stick to local favourites like red wines from Rioja, blush from Navarra and Penedés, and reds and whites from Rueda. The interior is decorated in the style of a house from the land of the rising sun: black floors, wooden walls with landscape paintings and flower motifs etched on the columns and handrails. More Than Just a Restaurant |
C/ Nuncio 19 Madrid 28005 Spain +34 91 366 25 91 http://www.enerestaurante.com/ |
Ene is a restaurant, but also a nice place to meet your friends while taking a good cocktail and, something rather new in Spain, it's a place where you can have brunch on Sundays, lying on a tatami and surrounded by live music thanks to their great DJs. This place is divided in two floors: the first one includes the bar and the second one the restaurant, both decorated in a minimalist, Japanese way. From tapas to a select "a la cart" dishes, their cuisine is a mixture of Mediterranean, Japanese, American and Catalonian influences, and the result is always incredible. -Angeles Fernández Review © 2007, Wcities |

A new commercial concept |
Pradillo, 5 Madrid 28002 Spain +34 91 5641141 |
It is difficult to define this premises; it is a store, restaurant and art gallery all in one, the first establishment of its kind in Madrid. The store sells all sorts of designer furnishings and accessories for the home, both modern and antique; in the restaurant the likes of sushi and salads are served, and the gallery showcases the latest artistic trends. Japanese and Chinese cuisines |
La Reina, 37 Madrid 28004 Spain +34 91 521 5566 |
An intimate dining room divided into four separate spaces where you can order from a menu that combines Japanese and Chinese specialities at affordable prices. The house specials are sushi (raw fish) and Chinese soups (the portions are huge). It's best to come as a group and choose a few different dishes to share so that you get to try as much variety as possible. The staff are friendly and efficient and put up stoically with some of the rowdy behaviour that occurs at weekends. There are Japanese beers or sake (hot or cold) to go with the sushi. Japan fever captivates Madrid |
Plaza de las Cortes, 3 Madrid, Madrid 28014 Spain +34 91 429 7619 |
This restaurant's motto is "sushi for health and beauty". Other European capitals already have branches of this Japanese fast-food/self-service experience. The downstairs area allows you to pick your own sushi dishes from a moving conveyor belt and the total amount is added to your final bill. You can sit down and take your time upstairs in the simple, well-lit space and try other typical Japanese dishes, like tempura, seaweed and octopus. Proximity to the major law courts means you're more than likely to eat with famous politicians and journalists. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Contemporary mix of Mediterranean & Japanese |
Velázquez, 150 Madrid, Madrid 28002 Spain +34 91 564 4044 http://www.restaurantenodo.es/ |
An unusual and unique fusion of Mediterranean and Japanese cuisines, this kitchen serves up dishes like Tuna Tataki with White Garlic And Almond Sauce, and Revuelto de Setas (Scrambled Eggs With Wild Mushrooms). You can choose to eat on the lively and noisy ground floor, or on the brighter and more peaceful first floor. The tables on the latter are squeezed close together and some are in a long row. The restaurant generally attracts trendy people in their 30s who like to be noticed and it is so popular it even fills up on normally quiet Tuesday nights. Despite being fashionable, the prices are reasonable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Filipino and Japanese cuisines |
Paseo de la Castellana, 172 Madrid, Madrid 28046 Spain +34 91 359 1040 |
Make a special request, when you book in advance for a Teppanyaki Grill at your table, if you want to be entertained and learn about Japanese cooking at the same time as you eat. The chef will then come and cook thin slices of beef or chunks of lobster right in front of your eyes. The kitchen prepares excellent sushi and sashimi in addition to its range of delicious Filipino dishes (the owners are from the Philippine Islands). Try the speciality - Misono. If you can't decide, order one of the sample menus and you'll get a taste of the best on offer. You may as well stick to Japanese beer for drink. It's a spacious restaurant decorated in simple Oriental style that's been in business for 25 years. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Specialists in Japanese mixed tempura |
Paseo de la Castellana, 36 Madrid, Madrid 28046 Spain +1 34 91 577 3734 |
Madrid's most luxurious and expensive Japanese restaurant is huge and often full of large tour groups. However, it still retains an air of Oriental calm, even when busy. The interior is elegantly decorated in pure Japanese minimalist style. There's a sushi bar for those on a tighter budget. Portions in the main dining room are meagre compared to other places and the prices are high. You can reserve one of the private dining rooms and there is valet parking available too. They offer a sampler menu for EUR36.06. Review © 2007, Wcities |
