Acuarela

Café with charm
Calle de Gravina 10
Madrid, Madrid 28004
Spain
+34 91 522 2143
Despite the fact that it's small and the tables are squeezed close together, this café has a unique and attractive interior decor that creates an ideal environment for a quiet chat. If you're on your own, you can just sit in the pecera (fish bowl) and watch the world go by through the huge window. The wooden sculpture of gay icon San Sebastián takes centre stage and there's always an exhibition of paintings on the walls. Most of the clientele are gay and lesbian. Plaza de Chueca, the heart of Madrid's gay scene, is just around the corner.

The only difference you'll find is that Bazaar is more spacious and brighter. The interiors are done up in hues of white and cream. The ambience is casual and the wait staff, highly efficient and amicable. The menu offers a combination of Mediterranean and Pan Asian delicacies. A word of caution-the desserts can get a bit too rich and sinfully indulgent. The Chocolatissimo is highly recommended.

With its totally rustic interior decor, this popular restaurant is reminiscent of traditional Asturian cider bars in northern Spain. The menu is sensibly limited to just a few tried and tested favourites that everyone likes, and they are produced with care and attention. Try the succulent roast chicken, the crusty empanadas (meat and fish pies), the hearty Spanish omelette or the spicy chorizo sausage cooked in cider. To drink, there is just fresh cider. The interior decor is elegant and exotic and the waiters are happy to explain and describe all the unusual dishes on offer. There's a wide variety to choose from, including speciality tandoori and biryani dishes as well as Curried Spinach with cheese, Chicken Tikka and Chicken Kulfi. As for drinks, you can try a refreshing Lassi (yoghurt mixed with rose water and crushed ice), although Spaniards generally stick with the house Rioja (Glorioso) or any of the other good Rioja wines on the list, like Marqués de Murrieta and Marqués de Riscal. You'll feel like you're in a museum, surrounded by all these Hindu artefacts, bronze sculptures, paintings of the Taj Mahal and photos of maharajas. There's live music and dance every night except Sundays.

All the best Basque traditions are maintained in this light, airy and spacious restaurant. That includes the attractive rustic decor of exposed wooden ceiling beams, woollen rugs on the floor, and paintings of Basque landscapes on the walls. As for the food, it is simply outstanding. The house speciality is chipirones encebollados (baby squid with sweetened onions). The wines are as rich and delicious as the food: Marqués de Arienzo y Ondarre from Rioja is the house red and Mantel Blanco from Rueda is the house white. Try the homemade pacharán (Blueberry liqueur) as a digestif. It is a popular place with successful executives.

More than just traditional Basque gastronomy, Goizeko Wellington is a mixture of good tastes, colors and the "savoir fair" of chef Jesús Santos who expertly creates new dishes based on traditional recipes. The restaurant, born from the union of this master of Basque cuisine and the Hotel Wellington in which it is located, is elegant (formal dress required) and peaceful. Its environment is perfect to concentrate on a good conversation while enjoying their exquisite dishes: raw oyster salads or low-temperature turbot with wild mushrooms, together with their long and select list of wines. -Angeles Fernandez

A bright and brash concept restaurant with modernist decor that has become increasingly popular over the last few years as more and more people want to be entertained as they eat out. It offers magnificent views over central Madrid, spectacular live shows (including drag queens) and an excellent fixed-price salad bar (you can also choose from an imaginative a-la-carte menu). It caters particularly well for large groups on special occasions like hen parties and stag nights and the stage shows really are a riot. Among the 40 different flavours on offer, you'll find some truly original and exciting varieties, like dulce de leche (a thick sweet caramel) and white chocolate with walnuts. However, the most unusual is flavour is samboyán, egg-yolk mixed with altar wine (as they call it). It's suitable for kids because the wine is heated and the alcohol evaporates. Don't be afraid to mix the flavours. You can tell that the original owner was Italian and that he spent time in Argentina just by looking at the menu. Choose from a huge variety of canapes (around 15 different varieties) at EUR2.70) per portion and wash them down with a glass of beer or wine. The snacks are pricey, but you're also paying for the central location and the trendy atmosphere. A ración (large portion) of cured Iberian ham costs EUR9.01, a cheese platter is EUR8.4 and a selection of canapes will set you back EUR13.22.

Similar to many a modern Parisian bistros with its antique furniture and white linen tablecloths, this restaurant attracts journalists, politicians, and artists above all. The cooking has strong Galician and Catalan influences. Only the freshest natural ingredients are used. Try the oysters, Skate Hotpot, Cannelloni stuffed with pork shoulder, or Monkfish and Prawn Canapés. The wine list contains a wide selection of Spain's finest varieties. In summer, the outdoor terrace is in demand, so book well in advance.

A spectacularly successful Basque restaurant whose speciality dish is the horribly ugly but wonderfully tasty fish called txitxarro. Everything else on the menu is excellent as well, like the Cod Omelette, the Red Pepper Salad with Anchovies, the Grilled Cheese with Raspberry Sauce, the Monkfish cooked with Garlic and the huge chuletón (T-bone steak). There's a good selection of wines on offer in addition to draught cider straight from the barrel. It's a spacious place spread over two floors with a lively bar on the ground floor that serves great tapas. It's normally busy and bustling but you can always make yourself heard if you want to make serious conversation. This two-story restaurant is really spacious, and has an independent bar available for those who are enjoying some tapas.

Grilled beef steaks, fresh fish, crayfish and artichoke salad, cured Iberian ham are all specialites. Leave some room for the delicious homemade apple tart. The simple decor and the friendly maitre d' will make you feel at home. You'll find it close to the main university campus and its prices are reasonable.

Zen decor and a peaceful atmosphere are ideal accompaniments to Thai food. This place is an oasis of peace and quiet, especially as it's so close to the busy Plaza de España. The waiters are extremely polite, though it's hard to be understood or understand them (you'll have better luck with English than Spanish). The food, however, is very tasty. The clientele are a mixed bunch who come from all parts of the globe. Enjoy a dry sherry or traditional manzanilla wine at the old-fashioned bar where the waiters keep track of your bill with chalk marks on the counter.

Pate specialists
Calle De Alfonso X 6
Madrid, Madrid 28010
Spain
+34 91 310 2611
This French restaurant has been open for business for over 30 years serving up some wonderful dishes like Wild Mushrooms with Scrambled Eggs, Steak Tartare, Beef Fondue and Spinach and Salmon Pancackes. However, it's most famous for its homemade Pate de Foie Gras. Dominique Garde is the experienced chef in charge of the kitchen. You can choose from an excellent selection of wines. You would have to book ahead, as there are only six tables. Once inside, you'll be surrounded by a delightful interior of wrought-iron screens, flower-print wallpaper, salmon-coloured floor tiles and exposed wood. It's the perfect setting for a romantic evening out.

Traditional dishes like Hevos Estrellados (fried eggs with potatoes and ham) and Rabo de Toro (oxtail stew) served up by the same owners who run the historic restaurant, Casa Lucio. You do not find as many famous people eating here as in Casa Lucio, but the food is the same: lamb chops, roast suckling pig, grilled steaks and for dessert, homemade rice pudding. Red meats are the house speciality, and they're best accompanied by solid red wines. Valet parking is available. A sampler menu is available for EUR24.04.

Abraham García has been one of the star chefs in Madrid kitchens since the early 1990s and he's had time to develop his own unique style. It's now available here, where he adds exotic touches to traditional Spanish recipes to produce dishes like Smoked Goose Liver, Calamares al Martini (squid with Martini sauce), Rape en Salsa de Cava y Almendras (monkfish in sparkling wine and almond sauce) and Solomillo a las Trufas (sirloin with truffles). Try the Grapefruit Sorbet for dessert. There's an extensive wine list to choose from, the service is good and the dining room is attractively decorated with photos from Luis Buñuel´s movies.

A real Madrid drinks bar

If you are on your own and looking for a bit of local colour, this is a safe and welcoming sort of place to start the night. It's a typical music bar, strategically located in the heart of town. You'll hear a great mix of flamenco and contemporary pop music. On hot summer nights, it's worth taking one of the sidewalk tables so you can check out the talent moving from one bar to the next. If you're here during the day you'll be served tasty tapas and raciones (larger helpings) with your drinks.

WokCafe

Pan-Asian delights
Calle Infantas 44
Madrid, Madrid 28004
Spain
+34 91 522 9069
Take the Gran Vía metro to Cheuca and when you arrive, look out for WokCafe in the next parallel lane. The atmosphere is clean and the beaded curtains with red sofas give you an idea of what you'll find on the menu. Perfect for chilling out with friends, this eating spot covers it all - from traditional dishes like tempura, noodles, and sushi to modern day fast food items like burgers and pizzas. The sushi is not something this place can boast about, though. With great food, clean ambience and reasonable rates, there also comes a drawback - the crowds. The place can get quite crowded, but if you're in a mood to party this surely shouldn't dampen your mood.

A multi-purpose eating place where you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks. Its tightly packed tables are surrounded by a decor of exposed brick walls, antique clocks and lamps fit for a palace. It caters for a young clientele mainly in their 20s and serves up modern Mediterranean cuisine at very reasonable prices. The house speciality is a salad of avocados, mango and cottage cheese and the menu features good rice and fish options as well. After eating you can retire to the magnificent basement library to relax over a drink on a comfortable sofa in front of the open fire.

Luxurious haute cuisine
Calle Álvarez de Baena 4
Madrid, Madrid 28006
Spain
+34 91 561 4840
When it opened in 1973, this restaurant was considered the best of its kind in Spain. It brought together the best kitchen team, equipment and wine cellar available. Despite the fact that its founder Jesús Oyarbide has left, the new team has managed to maintain the high standards he set. It has two Michelin stars. The house speciality is Bogavante (lobster) Salad. Other outstanding options include Salmonetes a las Finas Herbas (red mullet with herbs) and Manitas de Cerdo Rellenas de Cordero (pig's feet stuffed with lamb). There's a sommelier on hand to recommend the most appropriate wine for your meal. There is a menu available for EUR48.08.

A cheap and cheerful neighbourhood Cuban restaurant in what's now called Little Havana. It offers a number of economical set menus to choose from and it's worth ordering a daquiri while you wait. Homemade house specials include Black Beans and Rice, Spicy Ground Beef and Ropa Vieja (shredded meat with vegetables, chickpeas and tomato sauce). It doesn't have any fancy decor but still attracts the crowds.

Cider plus beef & cod
Quevedo, 3
Madrid 28014
Spain

This is a proper old-fashioned cider bar with checked tablecloths, sawdust on the floor and they pour the cider directly from the barrel. The enormous beefsteak and the delicious cod omelettes are hearty and filling dishes at reasonable prices. This is a popular dining option among businessmen during the week, and couples during the weekends.

Innovative dishes in an elegant environment
Calle Del Barquillo 10
Madrid 28004
Spain
+34 915228226
In this elegant restaurant you will enjoy an imaginative menu with dishes such as Cream of Artichoke, Eggplant and Pistachio, Cuitlacoche quesadilla (mushroom of the corn) or other Mexican food. Others dishes include fish, free-range eggs, lamb, and Greek yoghurt. Interestingly, the chef worked with Abraham Garcia of the famous Viridiana. They also have a good wine list. The environment is pleasant to pass a good evening.
