A typical traditional Madrid bar since it opened in 1860, it's famous for being the birthplace of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1879. It's also famous for serving delicious deep-fried cod fritters in batter along with fresh draught beer. Elegant and Modern Meat |
Calle Espronceda, 34 Madrid 28003 Spain +34 91 395 00 37 http://www.restauranteestik.com/ |
"Estik" is, roughly translated, Spanish for "steak." This restaurant is, not surprisingly, a paradise for meat lovers. The menu offers standards like sirloin steak, Entrecote, and "Tartar Estik." For the more adventurous, there are special selections such as gazelle, zebra, and buffalo. They even feature seafood like lobster or tuna. The service is great and the wine list is diverse. The restaurant is divided in two floors; the retro feel and gray scale tones of their decoration give it a charming atmosphere. -Angeles Fernandez Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cod is king |
Suero de Quiñones, 22 Madrid, Madrid 28014 Spain +34 91 519 2572 |
The menu offers Mediterranean cuisine along with the house speciality cod prepared in over 50 different ways. With all these choices available, if you can't make up your mind, try the sampler menu. The wine list features mainly reds from Rioja and Ribera del Duero (the chef even recommends red wine for some of the cod dishes), as well as a good selection of Catalan whites. The seafaring decor is an attractive combination of wood-panelled walls and ceiling, a mainmast, and maritime paintings. It's a successful restaurant that's been in business since the late 1980s and it's located just behind the Auditorio Nacional (High Court). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mediterranean Cuisine & Great Seafood |

It's expensive, but what you're paying for are top-quality fresh ingredients and a hushed, respectful atmosphere similar to a gentleman's club. The kitchen specialises in shellfish, paellas, fresh fish and delicious potato salad. The wine list features mostly reds from Rioja. You're surrounded by a traditional decor of lithographs showing landscapes and animals hanging on wood-panelled walls under a wood-panelled ceiling along with red and green velvet drapes. Top-quality Galician fish & seafood |
Calle de la Reina Mercedes 20 Madrid, Madrid 28020 Spain +34 91 553 23 33 |
You won't find anything but the best fresh fish and shellfish on your plate here, supplied by the owner's own fishmonger's shop. Try their angulas a la bilbaína (eels), cocochas (cod cheeks - quite a delicacy!) or salpicón de marisco (seafood platter). Given the high prices, diners tend to be successful, middle-aged and well-to-do. The interior decor is designed to make you feel like you're in a typical Galician tavern. You can reserve private dining rooms for a bit more intimacy and there is valet parking. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quality food in a sea-faring ambience |
Ortega y Gasset, 75 Madrid, Madrid 28006 Spain +34 91 402 1290 |
Top quality fish and shellfish are what you're served here, as you would expect from a restaurant that has been awarded a Michelin star. The chef is confident enough to keep his dishes simple and delicate. The house speciality is tender sole, although it's worth trying other delicacies like Aguinaga eels, oven-roasted sea bass, red bream, monkfish and salmon salad or seafood soup. Wash it all down with a choice of subtle white wines from Albariño, Rueda, Rioja or even Catalan or Navarra wines. The excellent house variety comes from Cacabelos. The decor is in keeping with the name and the cuisine, all fishing nets, oars, lamps and other seafaring objects. Review © 2007, Wcities |
