A typical traditional Madrid bar since it opened in 1860, it's famous for being the birthplace of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1879. It's also famous for serving delicious deep-fried cod fritters in batter along with fresh draught beer. Or you could sit down to a full meal in the restaurant, where you can expect to pay EUR21.03 a head on average.

You'll be served some excellent fresh Mediterranean fish in this Andalusian restaurant that's decked out like an old sailing ship. It specialises in Salt-Baked Fish and Steamed Shellfish. During the 1980s it was one of Madrid's most prestigious restaurants until the management over-stretched themselves. It's now slowly making its way back to fame. Estik

Elegant and Modern Meat
Calle Espronceda, 34
Madrid 28003
Spain
+34 91 395 00 37
http://www.restauranteestik.com/
"Estik" is, roughly translated, Spanish for "steak." This restaurant is, not surprisingly, a paradise for meat lovers. The menu offers standards like sirloin steak, Entrecote, and "Tartar Estik." For the more adventurous, there are special selections such as gazelle, zebra, and buffalo. They even feature seafood like lobster or tuna. The service is great and the wine list is diverse. The restaurant is divided in two floors; the retro feel and gray scale tones of their decoration give it a charming atmosphere. -Angeles Fernandez

It's expensive, but what you're paying for are top-quality fresh ingredients and a hushed, respectful atmosphere similar to a gentleman's club. The kitchen specialises in shellfish, paellas, fresh fish and delicious potato salad. The wine list features mostly reds from Rioja. You're surrounded by a traditional decor of lithographs showing landscapes and animals hanging on wood-panelled walls under a wood-panelled ceiling along with red and green velvet drapes. Unsurprisingly, it's popular with middle-aged businessmen.

O'Pazo

Top-quality Galician fish & seafood
Calle de la Reina Mercedes 20
Madrid, Madrid 28020
Spain
+34 91 553 23 33
You won't find anything but the best fresh fish and shellfish on your plate here, supplied by the owner's own fishmonger's shop. Try their angulas a la bilbaína (eels), cocochas (cod cheeks - quite a delicacy!) or salpicón de marisco (seafood platter). Given the high prices, diners tend to be successful, middle-aged and well-to-do. The interior decor is designed to make you feel like you're in a typical Galician tavern. You can reserve private dining rooms for a bit more intimacy and there is valet parking.

Quality food in a sea-faring ambience
Ortega y Gasset, 75
Madrid, Madrid 28006
Spain
+34 91 402 1290
Top quality fish and shellfish are what you're served here, as you would expect from a restaurant that has been awarded a Michelin star. The chef is confident enough to keep his dishes simple and delicate. The house speciality is tender sole, although it's worth trying other delicacies like Aguinaga eels, oven-roasted sea bass, red bream, monkfish and salmon salad or seafood soup. Wash it all down with a choice of subtle white wines from Albariño, Rueda, Rioja or even Catalan or Navarra wines. The excellent house variety comes from Cacabelos. The decor is in keeping with the name and the cuisine, all fishing nets, oars, lamps and other seafaring objects.

Rocío

Tasty fried fish
Don Ramón de la Cruz, 28
Madrid, Madrid 28001
Spain
+34 91 431 2445
A spacious and busy restaurant that serves tasty tapas with your drinks at the bar. It specializes in Pescaíto Frito (fried Mediterranea fish), although the rice dishes and the cured ham from Jabugo are worth trying too. The set meal of the day (EUR10.81) is a good value, offering a choice of starters like Gazpacho or Fresh Asparagus followed by squid or steak, and then dessert for just EUR11. The interior is decorated in traditional Andalusian style, with whitewashed walls, green-painted tables and chairs, and tiled floors. It's popular with business people at lunchtime. Large parties are well catered for and there is a car-parking service available.

Madrid, Madrid 28001
Spain

Some of Madrid's best fresh fish and shellfish are served in this simple and homely restaurant. That's because the owner also has a stall in Mercamadrid, the capital's most important fresh produce market, and therefore gets direct access to best ingredients available. You'll be dazzled by the choice: clams, mussels, oysters and percebes (goose barnacles) are just a few of the shellfish varieties that are delicious steamed. The fillets of sole could not be more tender. There's no red meat on offer, only Iberian cured ham. The interior is decorated with a nautical theme. Even though it's a fairly simple place, the prices are high.
