Almendro

When the bell tolls, great tapas appear
Calle del Almendro 13
Madrid, Madrid 28005
Spain
+34 91 365 4252
Get here early in the evening because there are not many tables and you will not want to stand all night waiting for the delicious tapas to arrive. You probably will not want to share the tapas either because they're so good. Shout your order through the kitchen window and the bell will sound when the food is ready. Try the wild boar blood pudding, the savoury toasted bagels, Roscas, or their famous fried egg dishes, and wash them down with a glass of beer or Fino sherry. You will find this bar in the lively nightlife district of La Latina, not far from the Rastro (Flea Market). The old-fashioned interior was recently restored in a simple but attractive combination of plaster, brick and woodwork.

You are sure to enjoy the creative cuisine served at El Amparo, one of the most elegant restaurants in town. It is spread over three floors and the dominant feature is the huge central skylight; the walls are covered with paintings and tapestries. Master chef Martín Berasategui's specialties include puff pastry filled with tangy apples and foie gras, smoked fish dishes, Oxtail Stew with purée of celery and ravioli stuffed with goose liver paté and truffles. All of Spain's highest quality Denominación de Origen wines appear on the wine list and there is a wide choice of spirits like Orujo (typical spirit from northern Spain) and cognac. Valet parking is available.

Specialist tandoori oven
Zurbano, 5
Madrid, Madrid 28010
Spain
+34 91 319 8716
An ideal venue for a romantic night out, this spacious and elegantly decorated Indian restaurant serves a great selection of spicy starters, as well as deliciously sweet almond and syrup desserts. Try one of their tandoori dishes cooked in the characteristic clay oven; it is the house specialty. The best accompaniment is rice prepared in many interesting ways. It is one of only a few of its kind in Spain, as Indian cuisine has not taken off here yet.

Bola Taberna

Famous for its Madrid stew
Calle De La Bola 9
Madrid, Madrid 28013
Spain
+1 34 91 547 6930
This is one of those restaurants that has been around forever and, fortunately, does not seem to have changed over the years. It maintains its old-fashioned interior and continues to prepare traditional dishes the way it always has. Although it is famous for its version of Cocido Madrileño (a popular Madrid two-course soup/stew, EUR 12), it is also worth trying the delicately grilled sole or any of the other popular stews. The wine list has an acceptable range of varieties to choose from.

Having won two prestigious Michelin stars, you can be sure of getting something special to eat in Sergi Arola's venture. The famous chef prepares his own personal versions of haute cuisine and has them served to a select clientele in his restaurant on a mezzanine floor in Hotel Miguel Angel. It's decorated in minimalist style - just plain colours, lots of light from huge windows and lots of space between tables. The kitchen and the wine cellar are open to view. Don't forget to reserve a table several days in advance as there are only 50 covers. Outstanding dishes include his Asparagus Tempura, Warm Clam Salad and Boletus Carpaccio. There's a range of tempting desserts as well. Valet parking.

Caby Mayor is a Cantabrian restaurant that naturally specializes in fresh fish, where the raw ingredients are treated with tender loving care. You would be advised to try the Lobster Salad with monkfish and lemon preserve as a starter. It is located in the spacious ground floor premises that have been tastefully divided into several different spaces, all decorated with a nautical theme.

It is much more than a café. In fact, this is a restaurant that is good enough to have been awarded a Michelin star for its creative and modern style of cooking. The house specials are cod prepared in a variety of ways and duck liver paté. There is a gourmet menu and an excellent wine cellar. The restaurant is built on top of the ruins of an old convent close to the Teatro Real, and tends to fill up after performances and on Sunday afternoons when the outdoor terrace is very popular.

Specializing in grilled meats since it opened in 1986, the best thing on the menu here is the Galician beef. It is best accompanied by fried potatoes and peppers. For starters, you can choose from a selection of salads, egg dishes, pork, sausage, and cheeses. Wash it all down with a fine wine or champagne from the excellent cellar, and try a homemade dessert. You are surrounded by a simple, tasteful decor of white walls and checkered tablecloths. There are two floors with enough room to sit 180 people and a lovely outdoor terrace in summer. Classic spot for tapas
Plaza de Jesús, 4
Madrid, Madrid 28014
Spain
+1 34 91 429 2243
You will not want to miss this classic tapas bar in your tour of the town. You will recognize it by the beautiful mosaic façade. It serves a selection of elaborately prepared canapés and great draught beer to the heaving masses that congregate at the bar every day. The interior is decorated like an old rustic tavern with lots of dark wood and earthenware jars on the shelves. If you are hungry, order a generous portion, or ración, of fish (anchovies, marinated anchovies, or bonito, fresh tuna) for around EUR 6.

Horcher

Great for wild game
Calle de Alfonso XII 6
Madrid, Madrid 28014
Spain
+34 91 522 0731
Preparing the hearty and wholesome cuisine favoured by the German upper-middle classes has served this successful restaurant well. It attracts a loyal clientele of well-to-do madrileños for the speciality game dishes and the excellent wine cellar. Try the Venison Stew, Roast Squab with Truffle Sauce, Roast Pheasant or Partridge, or Venison Carpaccio. Good fish options include Sea Bass in Saffron Sauce and the Cod and Aubergine Gratin. Their Austrian desserts - crepes and Appelstrudel - are famous. The decor is suitably heavy and baroque. You will find it close to Retiro Park. It might be expensive, but the quality of the food makes it worth it.

Similar to many a modern Parisian bistros with its antique furniture and white linen tablecloths, this restaurant attracts journalists, politicians, and artists above all. The cooking has strong Galician and Catalan influences. Only the freshest natural ingredients are used. Try the oysters, Skate Hotpot, Cannelloni stuffed with pork shoulder, or Monkfish and Prawn Canapés. The wine list contains a wide selection of Spain's finest varieties. Madrid's most luxurious and expensive Japanese restaurant is huge and often full of large tour groups. However, it still retains an air of Oriental calm, even when busy. The interior is elegantly decorated in pure Japanese minimalist style. There's a sushi bar for those on a tighter budget. Portions in the main dining room are meagre compared to other places and the prices are high. You can reserve one of the private dining rooms and there is valet parking available too. They offer a sampler menu for EUR36.06.
