The Altrincham Garrick Society was formed in 1913 with encouragement from George Bernard Shaw and the company raised funds to build its own theater. It first opened its doors in 1932 and has a capacity of 484 comfortable seats. Facilities include sophisticated lighting and sound equipment, a scenery workshop, wardrobe and property department and several rehearsal rooms.Over the years the theater has put on every conceivable type of production and regularly performs Shakespeare, classical plays, pantomime and music hall, as well as popular comedies, dramas and musicals.

Bolton's museum houses a quirky and unique variety of exhibits in its collection. These include examples of major British archaeological finds and rare Egyptian artefacts. There is also an aquarium where living exhibits are on display, such as reputedly the oldest living piranha fish in the world and the first Madagascan pin-striped dambas to be bred in captivity.The gallery boasts paintings, sculpture and contemporary ceramics amongst its permanent exhibits and hosts regular one-off, community and touring exhibitions. There is also a small gift shop on site selling prints, postcards and other memorabilia.

Probably best known for the nationally renowned Thomas Wrigley collection of Victorian oil paintings and watercolours, including both a Turner and Constable, the gallery also has a selection of temporary themed exhibitions throughout the year, covering everything from photography to local crafts. The museum, which was opened in 1907 has an excellent reconstruction of a cobbled Bury street, showing shops and dwellings from throughout the history of the area, along with other related interactive displays and exhibits.

The whole area is a popular tourist attraction. It is well worth including a tour of the village itself and the surrounding countryside.

This imposing museum is of particular interest for its recreation of a typical northern street at the turn of the century - complete with local pub, chemist's shop, Victorian parlour and worker's cottage. It also houses a comprehensive local history library. The gallery on the same site is the home of an important collection of paintings and drawings by L S Lowry, with many of the works on permanent show. There is also a Victorian gallery, which includes examples of painting, pottery and fine furniture. Other facilities include a café, gift shop and free on-site parking.

The Hippodrome is a traditional and ornate theatre built in 1904 with a seating capacity of 1262 - making it one of the largest outside the city centre. In the past it has served the community as both a cinema and a theatre, but today is used as a theatre only. It is used by both local amateur and professional companies and runs a highly successful annual Christmas pantomime, there are also regular touring performances from popular middle-of-the-road and cabaret artists. The theatre has a small foyer shop and a licensed bar serving alcohol and soft drinks.

This complex has it all: two swimming pools, a sports hall, activity halls and Motiv8 (a health and fitness suite) as well as sauna and sunbed facilities. It's even one of the venues for the Commonwealth Games. Sports available include badminton, bowls, martial arts, tennis and volleyball.For a less strenuous time, the centre contains several bars, cafes and a function suite with conference and syndicate rooms. A 488-seat auditorium stages many repertory and youth theatre productions, generally from September to June. Finally, the centre's library contains a good stock of fiction and non-fiction, children's and reference books. Tickets can be bought only by cash but the merchandise outlet accepts cards.
