Manchester city centre offers a vast choice of accommodation to suit all price brackets - for the business user or tourist - within close proximity to the city's tourist sights and main amenities. Equally, if you wish to explore the various popular attractions and pleasant countryside on the city outskirts there is plenty of choice in many of the main suburbs including Stockport, Bolton, Altrincham and close to Manchester International Airport.

Inexpensive

There is some excellent value pub accommodation in the city centre including the Burton Arms Hotel near Victoria Station, The Crown Inn perfectly located on Deansgate and close to Castlefield and the loud, boisterous, gay-friendly The New Union on Canal Street.

If you are looking for a more traditional, family run hotel there are several options available. Monroes Hotel close to Piccadilly Station and the Mitre Hotel in the grounds of Manchester Cathedral for example. Alternatively central Manchester is home to a flagship YHA, its brand new purpose built water-front development in the fashionable Castlefield Basin being close to some of the city's best nightlife.

As might be expected most of the quality inexpensive hotels in Manchester are to be found in outlying districts like Chorlton and Didsbury to the south and Harpurhey and Blackley to the north. In the leafy surroundings of Barlow Moor Road in West Didsbury, for example, you can find a number of small family hotels offering good facilities at competitive prices, only 15 minutes by taxi from the city centre, such as Bourneville Hotel and Green Gables Guest House. In the less fashionable areas of north Manchester even better value for money can be obtained at friendly guest houses and small hotels with Harpers Hotel in Harpurhey just a mile or so from the centre.

Moderate

If you are on a relatively tight business budget there are many moderately priced hotels close to or within the city centre itself. The Hotel International is a popular choice with rail travellers thanks to its location close to Piccadilly Station and just five minutes walk from some of the city's main shopping and entertainment centres, while the elegant Princess Hotel on the corner of Portland Street boasts its own exclusive nightclub and is perfectly placed for the restaurants of Chinatown.

Those looking for gay-friendly accommodation could try the vibrant atmosphere of the Rembrandt Hotel on Canal Street in the heart of the Gay Village. If you wish to enjoy the more cultural pursuits that the Lowry Centre has to offer you could try the modern, value-for-money efficiency of the Holiday Inn Express at Salford Quays or for sporting aficionados, the Old Trafford Lodge is just a short walk from both Lancashire County Cricket Club and Manchester United FC.

Further out from the centre you can enjoy the great food and quirky family charm of the Albany Hotel in Chorlton or the excellent facilities of the Britannia Hotel in Stockport, which is a great tourist base for visiting the Peak District and is close to the airport. For those on the road, the Novotel Manchester West is a good quality stopping off point on the M60 orbital motorway, just 7 miles from the city centre.

Expensive

If you want real quality accommodation in the city, there are a wide selection of places within the city centre from the striking modern façade and bold architectural sweep of the Malmaison near to Piccadilly Station to the fine Victorian frontage of the popular Britannia with its many self contained bars and restaurants along Portland Street - perfect for exploring Chinatown.

For businesses and organizations requiring the best in conferencing facilities the modern Manchester Conference Centre & Hotel on Sackville Street - close to Piccadilly - is an ideal choice. Air travellers can find several locations close to Manchester International Airport like the comfortable Airport Moat House and Forte Posthouse Manchester Airport with its usual high quality service.

Very Expensive

Befitting a major, cosmopolitan city such as Manchester, there are many world-class hotels in the city centre itself, such as the famous Edwardian landmark of the grand Crowne Plaza - The Midland close to both G-Mex and Deansgate and the imposing façade of the Palace Hotel on Oxford Road. While the elegance and charm of the waterfront Victoria & Albert Hotel is a perfect base for visiting the rejuvenated Castlefield area and is close to Salford Quays.

Beyond the City

High powered international business users will find that Manchester International Airport plays host to several top quality hotels, including the luxurious Manchester Airport Hilton and the Radisson SAS Hotel. In the affluent suburbs of south Manchester there are several country hotels, including Stanneylands in Wilmslow and The Village Hotel & Leisure Club in Cheadle. Both offer superb facilities and excellent locations close to some of the region's most attractive countryside such as the Peak District National Park and the southern Pennine hills.

City Centre

Manchester
United Kingdom
The IRA bombing in 1996 has had a fundamental effect on the city centre. The subsequent re-development has created a major shopping area to rival anywhere in the country. Showcase stores such as the largest Marks & Spencer in Europe and the wide-open spaces of Exchange Square help to create a perfect environment for the avid shopper. To the west, the administrative hub of the city is located in the area around Albert Square where you can find the imposing Victorian gothic architecture of the Town Hall. Culturally the G-Mex Centre and Bridgewater Hall are the places to enjoy all kinds of events from rock concerts to classical recitals.

Didsbury, Chorlton and Withington

Manchester
United Kingdom
Just a few miles south of the city centre are some of the most fashionable and highly sought after residential areas in Manchester, the verdant environment and superb eating, drinking and shopping creating this demand. Didsbury is home to some of the city's best restaurants such as the Lime Tree and pubs like the Metropolitan. Chorlton has an equally cosmopolitan if slightly more bohemian character and you can enjoy urban café bar society on Wilbraham Road, with the Polar Bar, The Bar and Saints all in close proximity. Withington is a slightly more student-orientated area with a vibrant main street that includes some excellent shops and bars including the popular Solomon Grundy.

Old Trafford and Salford

Manchester
United Kingdom
Home of the region's most famous sporting institutions like Lancashire County Cricket Club and of course Manchester United. This whole area has been the subject of huge investment and re-development over the last few years with the most obvious example being the imposing Trafford Centre, a £600 million shopping complex, including the only Selfridges & Co store outside London. Across the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford, Lowry (The) and Quays have brought a whole new sense of purpose to an area previously in decline.
