This company offers guided tours through some beautiful Upcountry areas. Maui's Upcountry is cooler than the "desert side" and has a less tropical atmosphere. It is also extremely beautiful and well worth exploring. You'll see ocean cliffs, the Haleakala crater, waterfalls, freshwater pools and more. A swimming and picnic break takes place halfway through the ride. Rides start each morning. Only six riders are allowed on the trip, so reserve in advance. Each outing is more than 4 hours long and costs USD185 per person.

While one could not say that all roads lead to this museum, it could certainly seem that way to Maui drivers. Located at one of the largest intersections on Maui, it is adjacent to Maui's main sugar factory. The pungent aroma of sugar cane permeates the air for miles. The museum provides visitors with extensive information on the history of the sugar industry, as well as details about its cultivation and production. Many exhibits are interactive, making use of modern effects. There is a gift shop onsite. Admission is USD5 for adults and USD2 children ages 6-17. Children 5 and under are free.

Hana Highway may sound fairly non-threatening - after all, it is only 55 miles long - but once you've driven the road, you understand exactly how long 55 miles can be. As one of Maui's major attractions, tourists from around the globe make the wild and wooly drive daily, but most people miss the majority of the attractions. For that reason, it's wise to purchase the guided-tour tapes or CDs, available through this company for USD20. Some of the highlights of the drive include hidden pools and waterfalls, hiking trails, exotic fauna and Waianapanapa State Park, with its amazing black sand beach.

Iao Valley Road
(in Iao Valley State Park, base of mountains)
Maui and Molokai, HI 96793

Towering in the sky above Iao Valley, this green-covered mountain peak is one of Maui's most famous sites. It's the first picture that people take upon visiting the valley, even though most of them don't venture any closer than the parking lot. However, the base of the Needle is an excellent spot for picnicking, splashing around or hiking. Bring a lunch and a lot of mosquito repellent, and prepare to spend a few idyllic hours. Hikers, stay in the marked trails and follow basic safety rules at all times.

The focal point of this park is the Iao Needle. A natural rock formation covered in green moss, it towers 2,000 feet over the park. There are several routes to hike to the Needle. There are also clearings, gardens and a spacious picnic area. Iao Valley was the site of a huge, bloody battle hundreds of years ago, and some locals believe that parts of it are still haunted. A much less romantic and more tangible threat comes from the clouds of mosquitoes that lurk near the streams and attack unwary visitors.

Formerly King Kamehameha Golf Club, Kahili reopened in the fall of '05 with 18 holes and brand new greens. Kahili Golf Course is conveniently located at Waikapu, just 10 minutes from Kahului Airport and 30 mintues from the Wailea and Ka'anapali Resort Hotels. Experience a day of golf at one of Maui's best golf courses. The 6469 yard, Par 72 was constructed in 1991 and designed by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright. Carved out of the foothills of the scenic West Maui Mountains, the design of Kahili Golf Course takes advantage of the local terrain and Hawaiian Tradewinds to create a unique golf experience. The Par 3s on the front side lay up and downhill to small greens. On the backside, a small dry creek bed and a lake come into play; accuracy is a must. The Par 4s are designed to make the golfer work to get to the greens in regulation. There are many elevation changes combined with doglegs in both directions, making long drives an essential part of the game. The Par 5s are designed to give the long ball hitter a chance for a birdie or possibly an eagle.

There's enough on Maui to keep you busy above ground, but things can get overwhelming when you start looking below sea level. There are colonies of sea turtles, pods of dolphins, living coral reefs and hundreds of species of tropical fish. Makena Charters show you just a small portion of what there is to see: underwater caves, the reefs off Molokini, a sunken World War II tank, Turtle Town and more. The underwater action is nonstop. This is one of the last remaining six-person dive boats. Beginners and certified divers are welcome.

If you enjoy the peaceful escape the Makena Golf Course provides, then you'll love the addition of the new North Course, another 18-holes of championship golf designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Opened in 1993, the North Course goes out of its way to make golfers feel at one with their natural surroundings. There are no distractions on this course-unless you considered the unobstructed views of the blue pacific, neighboring islands, and humpback whales breaching during whale season to be a bit distracting. In fact, to make it feel more like a nature walk and less like a golf course, even cart paths on the North Course are tucked away and hidden from view. You will have some obstacles to overcome, however. And as an added bonus to save golfers some time looking for lost balls, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed most fairway so that everything slopes back towards the center

Sharing the same spirit that embodies the Makena Resort, the South Course also provides the serenity and tranquility many golfers are looking for. It's not to say that the course doesn't provide quite a measure for golfers of every level. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the South Course is a 6,739-yard, par 72 course with natural rolling fairways, undulating greens, and capitivating ocean and mountain views. The course boasts one of Hawaii's top driving holes, the par-5 number ten. According to members of the PGA Aloha Section, number ten was selected as one of the top par 5's in Hawaii. The proximity to the ocean is exactly why this course is so special. Besides having two oceanfront holes, numbers fifteen and sixteen, the South Course also affords an excellent view of humpback whales that visit here each winter. And since they keep coming back year after year, they must be on to something good!

Although the beach and jungle may never cease to entertain adults, children sometimes tire of natural wonders. If you are wondering what to do to entertain the kids, here is a solution: Take them to these go-karts and let them...well, go... for a few hours. They will enjoy puttering around the track and you will enjoy one of 16 flavors of shave ice. When go-karts begin to lose their appeal, adventurous kids may want to go for a ride on the "Gyro" machine. After one last round of shave ices, everyone can leave happy.

Several half-day and full-day hikes are offered, many to areas not usually visited by tourists. The "easy" three-mile Haleakala Waterfall Hike is appropriate for children. Several treks in the West Maui Mountains explore more remote, rugged, rainforest terrain. Snacks and minimal gear is included in tour prices. Discounts are offered for children 13 and younger, groups of six or more, or parties who book two weeks in advance.

While there are many ways to see the legendary sunrise over Haleakala, the downhill bike ride is perhaps the most memorable one. This bike company has been featured in Sunset and Time magazines, and has attracted a number of celebrity passengers. Two tour options are available. The Sunrise Tour picks you up around 2:15a. The Midday Tour will pick you up around 7:00a, too late to catch the sunrise but early enough to avoid the worst of the mid-day heat. The tours last eight hours and include one meal.

An introductory one or two-tank dive is perfect for uncertified divers. The two-day, beginning scuba program provides more intensive training over the course of four dives. International scuba certification is available through a four-day, eight-dive program. If you are a certified diver who needs a little review, take the refresher course.

It costs USD9.50 per adult, USD3 for children between the ages of 3-12. It can accommodate wheelchair-bound people, although it's best to call ahead of time so the tram driver can make preparations. The Pacific Whale Organization aims to scientifically identify adverse factors affecting the recovery of endangered marine mammals and works to eradicate those factors. Educational programs involving whales, dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals are regularly organised. The organization also maintains speakers' bureau and a library on marine mammals and their habitat. Most popular are the Sunset Cocktail and Dinner Cruise.

The course is lovely, with verdant hills and panoramic views of Mount Haleakala. The signature hole is the third, which gives players a choice of driving over a 130-yard gully or a 60-foot cliff. The course has a driving range and a very popular restaurant.
