This company offers guided tours through some beautiful Upcountry areas. Maui's Upcountry is cooler than the "desert side" and has a less tropical atmosphere. It is also extremely beautiful and well worth exploring. You'll see ocean cliffs, the Haleakala crater, waterfalls, freshwater pools and more. A swimming and picnic break takes place halfway through the ride. Rides start each morning. Only six riders are allowed on the trip, so reserve in advance. Each outing is more than 4 hours long and costs USD185 per person.

Always an adventure

Hana Highway may sound fairly non-threatening - after all, it is only 55 miles long - but once you've driven the road, you understand exactly how long 55 miles can be. As one of Maui's major attractions, tourists from around the globe make the wild and wooly drive daily, but most people miss the majority of the attractions. For that reason, it's wise to purchase the guided-tour tapes or CDs, available through this company for USD20. Some of the highlights of the drive include hidden pools and waterfalls, hiking trails, exotic fauna and Waianapanapa State Park, with its amazing black sand beach.

Guide Randy shares a wealth of natural history, geological and botanical lore, and island folklore while leading hikers through Maui's magnificent wilderness. Several half-day and full-day hikes are offered, many to areas not usually visited by tourists. The "easy" three-mile Haleakala Waterfall Hike is appropriate for children. Several treks in the West Maui Mountains explore more remote, rugged, rainforest terrain. Snacks and minimal gear is included in tour prices. Discounts are offered for children 13 and younger, groups of six or more, or parties who book two weeks in advance.

Let master fisherman David Bloch lead you to the best shoreline fishing spots on Maui. Several hundred species of fish live in the coastal waters, the trophy catch being the Ulua. These fish reach weights of 30-80 pounds. The world's record shoreline catch, a 563-pound sea bass, took place in Maui. Customers can book a full-day fishing trip, an overnight camping/fishing trip or, in the case of a small group, a charter excursion. David provides the gear, bait and food (in case the fish are not biting). Call for more information.

The beauty of vacationing on Maui is that your trip can be as cushy or as rugged as you want it to be. Companies like this one appeal to the adventure seeker. The concept is simple: Join a group of up to seven people to tour the back roads of the island. Several different tours are available, including a Haleakala hiking tour, a fishing tour, a Hana tour and a camping tour. Tour costs are inclusive of equipment and meals. Call pricing for information.

Located in lovely upcountry Maui, this golf course jokingly refers to itself as "Maui's coolest golf course." This is not so much a reference to its hip-ness as to the significantly lower temperatures found upcountry.

The course is lovely, with verdant hills and panoramic views of Mount Haleakala. The signature hole is the third, which gives players a choice of driving over a 130-yard gully or a 60-foot cliff. The course has a driving range and a very popular restaurant.

Experienced cyclists or lone wolves may prefer to steer clear of the large tour groups that bike down Haleakala. Instead, experience its glory alone or in a small group. This company is pleased to provide rental bikes and accompanying equipment. Prices are low—USD25 per person for the day. If you desire a bit more direction, see about booking a day trip down the mountain from 6,500 feet; and the downhill trip from the summit of Haleakala (10,000 feet above sea level. Please check for the pricing.
