The way this shopping center looks from the street is deceptive. Once you're in, you'll realize that it is much larger than it looks. The great part is, none of the shops are even remotely cheesy. As one local employee put it, "You won't find any T-shirts or bad art." A fantastic little Internet cafe opens very early in the morning. Specialty shops such as Foreign Intrigue Imports and Lei Spa open around 10a. Dining choices include Pacific'O and Hecock's.

Once upon a time this place was Mickey's & the Match, a favorite shopping spot for the local middle school set. Now it has acquired a new name and a new focus: the 18-40 year old tourist demographic. The merchandise really hasn't changed that much, though. As the teenage counter girl earnestly explains, "the tourists like their Aloha stuff." True, the Billabong shorts and Aloha shirts are mixed with suits and dresses. But still, the merchandise is far better suited to a beach than a boardroom.

The legend of this company dates back to the early days of Hawaiian colonization, when some truly "bad" donkeys were used to haul backbreaking amounts of beans up and down the treacherous mountain trails. This establishment is not just a cafe. It is a souvenir store and retailer in its own right, offering an impressive selection of cigars, logo shirts, hats and of course, rich Kona blends. Stop in if you need to buy a gift for the folks back home, or if you just want a cup o' joe to get your day started right.

This unique shop creates a wide array of nylon kites and windsocks. These beautiful kites are superbly constructed from taffeta nylon and fiberglass frames. Designs include the "whale's tale," a dancing hula girl, a gorgeous butterfly and the stunning "happy dragon." Bring home a colorful windsock as a special gift. You can choose from several original designs. The Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (the koi, Hawaii's state fish) consists of bright blue, red, yellow, turquoise and black panels interwoven to create a five-foot long "fish." Many designs have symbolic significance, like the pineapple (hospitality) and Kahili rainbow feathers (good luck). The factory gives free tours and complimentary kite-flying lessons, too.

Tropical fashions to outfit the entire family—literally—are sold here. Vivid, lovely batik prints are cut to fit children, women and men. Several pictures on the back wall show families, all dressed in exactly the same outfit, posing against a background of tropical palm trees. If you absolutely must do the matching-outfits thing, this is a very good place to look for them. Somehow, the clothes here can flatter men, women or messy toddlers. The store itself is a rainbow of color, drawing customers in from across the fairway.

This unique clothing line has several retail outlets in the Hawaiian islands, but this is the only shop that specializes in children's sizes. The exterior of the shop is charming, with white lattice work around the windows. Stepping inside, you'll be no less charmed: Staff members are friendly and helpful, and the shop has a cozy, breezy atmosphere.

The Coach shop has a soothing atmosphere compared to many of the other designer boutiques in Whaler's Village. The interior is decorated in warm earth tones, and sales people are friendly and helpful. The shop itself is fairly small, apparently not sharing its fashionable neighbors' opinion that designer boutiques should look like vast, cold museums of modern art. You'll find a decent selection of bags, watches and jewelry by the famous designer. As with all such shops, prices are high, but so is the quality.

The benches outside this downtown grocery store seem to be a local hangout. It starts around 8:30a, when a few old men gather to shoot the breeze. By noon, the crowd usually expands to include a few employees from the store and neighboring businesses. The store itself is large, busy and decently stocked. Historic Front Street is the main drag in Lahaina, West Maui. It runs along the shoreline, overlooking the ocean. The buildings along the road are reminiscent of Disneyland's Main Street, with colorful wooden buildings perched atop the sandy beach. You can find almost anything you would want or need here. Looking for jewelry? Original Maui Divers is your best bet. Souvenir junkies would do well to browse the super-sized Hilo Hattie's for a unique trinket. Art galleries are prevalent here, and at Simon-Jon Gallery you can purchase some island flair to brighten up your home. For shopping with a more sophisticated air, 505 Front Street is on a quieter stretch of Front Street, and home to many upscale boutiques and acclaimed restaurants. A stroll along Front Street is a pleasant way to spend the day in between catching that next wave.

For the uninitiated: Geckoes are the tiny, bright green lizards that can be spotted all over Hawai'i, both indoors and out of doors. No one ever tries to harm a gecko, since they are thought to bring good luck. They have become one of the symbols of Hawaiian pop culture, almost as ubiquitous as puka shell necklaces.

This silly store is dedicated to the gecko. Two human-sized gecko figurines are at the door. Inside, the shelves are filled with a ka-jillion gecko-imprinted souvenirs. Grass skirts and plant sticks (sans gecko) are also for sale.

After moving to the downtown location in 1931, the operation expanded to include a cafe. A huge old-fashioned gumball machine adorns the bakery area. The spacious but plain dining room has peeling linoleum floors, Formica tables and no windows. The food is inexpensive and satsifying. A full American-style breakfast costs around USD5.50. Maui and Molokai, HI 96753
United States
It has been around for ages, but this mall seems to be going through a hibernation period. (As any retailer will tell you, this is normal for a Maui mall.) Currently it is home to a few restaurants, notably Coconut's Bakery & Cafe and Thailand Cuisine. Longtime clients Waldenbooks and the Kukui Theaters remain, while the opening of a new bank may signal the beginning of a commercial spurt for this sleepy little mall. If not, well, it is still the only place in South Kihei to catch a movie. Note: Credit card acceptance policy varies by merchant.

Since 1982, this farm has been whipping up batches of Macadamia Nut Pesto Sauce, an island favorite. Interestingly, although the herbs in the pesto are grown on Moloka'i, the nuts come from the Big Island. This does not in any way diminish the sauce's popularity or authenticity. It's available in most major grocery stores throughout Hawai'i, but it can also be frozen and shipped. Kumu Farms also grows and sells papaya and herbs.

The attitude of this store is illustrated by two different signs. The first one reads, "Open Hours Subject to Maui Time." The second one says, "Sandy feet? Food? Drink? While it can't really be called a shopping center, this place is definitely a few steps up from the standard crafts bazaar. Fully half the merchants have their own store, and things are more sedate than at Kihei's Aloha Market. All manner of wood carvings, ornaments, jewelry and other souvenir items are on sale. A few high-class art galleries are in the back. Three informal eateries are in the center courtyard, and the tables that they share seem to be constantly crowded with shoppers taking a load off.

Amidst the designer boutiques and jewelry retailers in ritzy Whaler's Village, it's nice to see such an impressive selection of rare and region-specific art. Scrimshaw is an ancient sailor's art. Images are drawn onto tiny, delicate pieces of ivory using India ink. It's uncommon to find any of it these days, but this store has plenty. It features the work of several different scrimshaw artists, many of them from Hawai'i. Portraits and bios of the artists are displayed alongside their works. Other gift items are also for sale.

Walter Lappert is a Hawai'i legend. He began a tiny ice cream business upon retiring in Hawai'i in the early 80s. That tiny business quickly exploded; at this point, it has locations all over Hawai'i. Your nose will recognize this place before your eyes spot it. The scent of the fresh-baked waffle cones wafts out of the store and drifts dozens of feet away. Inside, choose from several varieties of decadent, outrageously high-butterfat ice cream. A few outdoor tables are available, most people choose to walk with their cones.

Located on the main street in downtown Maunaloa near Moloka'i Lodge, this is the spot to shop for outdoor clothing and equipment. The store has a nice selection of rugged apparel, hats and casual sportswear, as well as local handcrafted items, Moloka'i coffee gifts and souvenirs. The Center also books all activities offered through the ranch, including mountain biking excursions, archery, sport clay shooting and family activities. An adjoining shop rents and repairs bicycles.

New shopping center

Maui and Molokai, HI 96748

The town of Kaunakakai's only shopping center is small but modern. It is next to the American Savings Bank. The mall is new enough that even locals don't know where it is; they use ASB as a landmark. Stores include Kamakana Gallery and Haunani's Flowers. A chiropractic office is onsite, as is a popular deli and local restaurant. A bulletin board is out front, and many locals have already adopted the courtyard as a meeting and hangout spot.

It's easy to find this store because it's spacious and modern, unlike many of its sleepy-looking downtown neighbors. Located on the two-block strip of Kaunakakai that constitutes the center of town, the store gets plenty of foot traffic from tourists staying at the hotel or visiting by boat. The store sells resort and tropical fashions for women and children. Sarongs, swimsuits and hand-painted separates are for sale. Also available are skin products and jewelry. Other souvenirs can be found at its adjacent sister store, Molokai Fish & Dive.

Anyone who's looking for friendly spirits on the Friendly Isle will probably want to come to this store. It's pleasant, clean and upscale; closer to a wine shoppe than a liquor store. A wide selection of wines from around the world is available. Interestingly, only one Hawaiian winery, Maui's Tedeschi Vineyards, makes an appearance. American and Oriental snack items and candy are also sold. The owner looks like a mainlander but is as friendly as any local.

It all works. This store is one of the most popular retailers in the brand-new Ma'alaea Harbor Village. The upscale resort-wear suits sophisticated island residents and in-the-know tourists: it's tropical yet still quite stylish. Everything from swimsuits to neckties is for sale.

Although this is a new-ish store, it seems like it could be 100 years old. The shelves are stuffed with all kinds of second-hand literary treasures: westerns, romances, historical paperbacks, etc. The only new books are in the Hawaiiana section toward the front of the store. There is a sizable children's area, complete with miniature tables and chairs. Aside from doing a bang-up business in used books, the shop also specializes in pre-1950s film classics. As much as mainland sensibilities may rebel against the idea of shopping and dining at a gas station quick-stop, it's quite normal on Molokai. Thanks to the lack of gas stations (and restaurants!) on the island, this place is a veritable hot spot. While the name conjures up images of branches laden with flip-flops and slingbacks, the only tree in this store is on the ceiling. It's very pretty actually, made of shiny glass overlaid with etchings of tree branches. The merchandise is all for women. It's by turns showy and elegant, but all the styles look delicate and pricey. The artists who work here are thorough professionals, many of them having won awards in international competitions. As per law, they are all licensed by the State of Hawaii, which attests to the fact that the individual and the premises are sterile. It's also the official and only Skin Deep Tattoo, so do check their website for other parlors with the same name. Don't mix this place up with Tropical Tantrum in the Ka'ahumanu Center. Tantrum sells slightly fancy Aloha-wear for the 25-50 age bracket. Tanlines sells sexy swim-wear for bodies beautiful. Suits, tank tops, dresses, shorts and cover-ups are on display. A nice thing is, since most of the separates are either solid-colored or conservatively patterned, you can do a lot of mix-n-matching. A single tank top can be dressed up or down for street wear, beachwear or even club wear.

Experienced cyclists or lone wolves may prefer to steer clear of the large tour groups that bike down Haleakala. Instead, experience its glory alone or in a small group. This company is pleased to provide rental bikes and accompanying equipment. Prices are low—USD25 per person for the day. If you desire a bit more direction, see about booking a day trip down the mountain from 6,500 feet; and the downhill trip from the summit of Haleakala (10,000 feet above sea level. Please check for the pricing.

Maui and Molokai, HI 96748

Located on the Wavecrest Resort, this store is quite popular simply because it's the only option in town. There is one store further east, simply known as the Neighborhood Store, but all other options are in Kaunakakai. The store is small but decently stocked with a number of essentials, including canned food, snack items, beverages, sundries and toiletries. Some souvenirs and a selection of local arts and crafts are also on display.

Souvenir Extravaganza

Maui and Molokai, HI 96753

When you are planning on buying little hula dolls for about 100 people back home, this is the place to visit. Great quantities of every stereotypical Hawaiian souvenir are on the shelves. You will find sarongs, souvenir license plates, macadamia nuts, hats and more. This is also the place to find flip-flops, trashy paperbacks or any other beach essential. The store is large, well-lit and well-organized—which is good, because the service can be sluggish.

There are other store locations throughout Maui.
