Dining in Maui is overwhelming. Culinary styles hail from around the world, and some styles are unique to Maui alone. In one week—and in one town—a visitor can feast on Thai and French cuisine, fresh game and fresh fish, sandwiches, burritos and, of course, a few scoops of ridiculously decadent ice cream.

Ka'anapali

Amidst the five-star hotels and designer boutiques of this famous resort, one can find any number of fabulous restaurants. Most of them fall a bit short of world-class gastronomically, choosing to offer ambience and affordable prices in lieu of top-tier culinary masterpieces. Old favorites such as Leilani's on the Beach and Reilly's Seafood feature live music, drink specials and amazing views. The lovely Hula Grill can't be beat for ambience—and the fresh seafood wins local awards, if not international ones.

WEST MAUI

Kahana, Kapalua, Napili

Further along the coast the emphasis shifts from pleasing hungry crowds to pleasing educated palates. The area's gourmet restaurants include Roy's Nicolina, the Fish & Game Brewing Company and Rotisserie and Erik's Seafood Grotto. Two of the finest restaurants in the state of Hawai'i, the Plantation House and the Anuenue Room (The), are located in isolated Kapalua.

Lahaina

Lahaina Town is Maui's undisputed dining and drinking hot spot. All the best places are within a mile of each other, meaning if one place isn't working, it's easy to walk to another. Upscale restaurants range from first-class French, served at Gerard's, to the cutting-edge Pacific Rim creations found at David Paul's Lahaina Grill or I'o. Feast At Lele (The), presented on the beach outside Pacific'o, wins awards for the best cuisine and entertainment in Maui. For exotic Asian cuisine, try Bamboo Cafe. Ruth's Chris serves a great steak every time, while Longhi's Restaurant lobster is simply to die for.

While not advertised as much, inexpensive options abound. At least once, it is absolutely crucial to try an authentic local-style plate lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate. Lahaina Coolers, a block down from Front Street, is popular with locals because of its food and its atmosphere. Cheeseburger in Paradise is a boisterous Front Street experience, as is Moose McGillycuddy's. Each one of these places features live music most nights, and turns from a daytime restaurant to an after-hours bar.

SOUTH MAUI

Kihei

Dining options in Kihei range from five-star to five-dollar. For high-end dining, A Pacific Cafe -- Kihei in Azeka II is a perennial favorite. Roy Yamaguchi's latest venture is causing people to head over to Pi'ilani Villages in droves. Mid-range restaurants abound on South Kihei, ranging from Jameson's at the Maui Coast Hotel to Margarita's, which is actually in North Kihei. People who are trying to eat cheap on Maui won't find a better place than Kihei. Tasty and inexpensive meals can be enjoyed at Kihei Caffe, Maui Tacos and Alexander's. The Coffee Store -- Azeka Place is a great place for a chilly espresso drink any time of day.

In terms of nightlife, the local vote goes to Hapa's Brew Haus, where each night brings a different theme. Kai Ku Ono has a very pleasant bar scene that caters to a slightly more sophisticated crowd.

Wailea

The South Side equivalent of Ka'anapali boasts a wealth of fine dining options--and very little else. All of the hotels have at least two gourmet restaurants; some have more. Standouts include Humuhumunukunukuapua'a at the Grand Wailea, Nick's Fishmarket in the Kea Lani, and for buffet dining, the Palm Court at the Renaissance Wailea. For Sunday Brunch, the Maui Prince puts on a fabulous spread.

CENTRAL MAUI

Kahului

It's not always easy to figure out where to eat in Kahului. The town is spread out, and except for the two major malls, restaurants aren't in any one location. Probably the best known restaurant in Kahului is Marco's Deli, followed by Koho's — the quintessential family restaurant.

Wailuku

Surprisingly, though Wailuku is as local and un-beautiful of a town as Kahului, it has a number of excellent restaurants, mostly ethnic. If you can find your way to either A Taste of Saigon or Saigon Cafe, you won't be disappointed. Saeng's Thai is delicious and inexpensive, not to mention central.

Ma'alaea

The restaurants of Ma'alaea are developing a reputation among savvy tourists and affluent locals. Buzz's Wharf is famous for its enormous, sweet Tahitian prawns and award-winning crème brulee. The Ma'alaea Harbourfront is harder to find, but has earned rave reviews for its fresh fish, which are caught fresh daily and prepared nine different ways.

Pa'ia

Health food nuts should make Pa'ia their first, last and only stop for dining. Whether you're enjoying enormous breakfasts at Charley's or perhaps packing a picnic lunch at--where else? Picnic's—you're sure to get something delicious, fresh and healthful.

Just outside of Pa'ia one will find a true Maui legend, and a must-visit for any self-respecting gourmand. This is Mama's Fish House. The cuisine, ambience and service are legendary, and deservedly so.

UPCOUNTRY

Makawao, Kula, Pukalani

There are only a few destination restaurants in rural Upcountry Maui. En route to Haleakala you'll find the Hali'imaile General Store and the Kula Lodge Restaurant. In Makawao Town, there's only one place to go for night time entertainment: the famous Casanova's. If it's more of a peaceful occasion, make reservations at the Makawao Steak House. And anyone who makes the two-hour journey to Hana and wants a fine meal should definitely try the Hana Restaurant.

Dining in Maui is only as much of a science as you make it. If you're just looking for a good time, a quick bite, or a pretty meal, trust your own judgement.

This is a brand new eatery specializing in the spicy cuisine of Vietnam and Thailand. The owners have gone to great trouble to decorate the place with authentic Asian flair. The kitchen is equally authentic, and all menu items can be ordered as hot as you want. It's a casual and informal place with prices that will take you back ten years. At the adjacent sports bar, you can order Evil Jungle Prince Chicken and other exotic menu items while watching the 49ers and drinking Asian beer.

While Ma'alaea Harbour is enjoying noticeable commercial development at the moment, this restaurant has been around since long before the growth. It is a mainstay of South Kihei seafood dining and is priced quite reasonably by Maui standards. The house specialty is Tahitian prawns. Enormous and juicy, they are served baked in their shells, dripping with butter and fragrant with seasonings. One of the most interesting lunch choices is Buzz's Coconut Oyster Sub. The steaks here are tasty and the mixed drinks are potent.

Do not bother to worry about reservations; this popular upcountry eatery does not take them. It packs in the crowds as they come. If you have a large party, be prepared to wait during busy times. The portions here are enormous. At breakfast, a single pancake is enough to satisfy a normal appetite. All kinds of salads and fish sandwiches are served in addition to standard burger-n-fries fare. The restaurant was named after owner Jim Fuller's dog, who was further immortalized by the restaurant logo. It is spacious and busy with a diverse clientele.

The name of this restaurant is enough of a mouthful to be a meal in itself—many people shorten it to "Humuhumu." Aside from its name, the restaurant has also received high acclaim for its delicious seafood and its setting. It floats on a lagoon, surrounded by tropical flowers. The signature menu item is the spiny lobster, but be forewarned: it costs a pretty penny. To anyone who is still wondering about the name, it translates to the rather inexplicable phrase "Trigger Fish with a snout like a pig"—the Hawaiian state fish.

Marco's Grill & Deli

Authentic Italian, relaxed atmosphere
444 Hana Highway
Suite M
Maui and Molokai, HI 96732
United States
+1 808 877 4446
The outside of this Italian deli features a boxy shape and green awning that you can see from the highway. Inside, the atmosphere is busy and almost citified. The food is fresh and tasty, if a little overpriced. The breakfast menu features mouth-watering grilled treats such as the Chocolate Cinnamon French Toast. For lunch or dinner, heartier eaters may want to try the linguine with house-ground Italian sausage, while light appetites will be satisfied by a salad.

This restaurant is a local favorite—and for good reason. It offers Mexican specialties spiced up with a little island flavor. The beachfront location is ideal—look out over the blue Maui waters while you sip a strawberry or mango margarita and ponder how good life can be. The menu includes all sorts of Mexican dishes. Fresh local seafood is another option. Try the USD12.99 lobster special on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Order the restaurant's namesake in a variety of fresh fruit blends, mixed with top-shelf, premium or rough grade tequila.

Maui was regrettably short on fast, high-quality Mexican food before restaurateur Mark Ellman (a California native) created Maui Tacos in 1993. Now, this place is giving California taquerias a run for the money! Stop in to see why it is such a success. The Kihei location is right across from the beach and practically clothing-optional; consider yourself warned. Try the Ho'okipa Burrito. The fish tacos are also tasty. All items come with chips and the house salsas. Don't miss out on the pineapple salsa...mmmm.

A mixed crowd of locals and tourists frequents the establishment, downing drinks and dirty dancing on the crowded dance floor. In the daytime it does double-duty as a family-style bar and grill. Come on up for a burger and a cocktail, or wait until evening and join the party. Happy Hour is 3pm-6pm daily, but there are drink specials every night of the week. Take advantage of dollar drinks on Wednesday nights after 9:30pm. Be prepared for a long line if you arrive after 9pm.

Great steaks, grilled to perfection, are served at this elegant clubhouse overlooking the Ka'anapali Golf Course. As might be expected, the surf-and-turf offerings are exceptional. There is also a large pupu (appetizer) menu, and the sandwiches are hearty. On Sunday, the lobster special is a terrific choice (advance reservations required). The nightly all-you-can-eat prime rib special is among the best bargains on Maui. Reilley's collection of single-malt scotches is the largest on Maui, and its selection of rare bourbons and tequilas is also impressive.

Roy Yamaguchi, the superstar of Pacific Rim cuisine and darling of critics everywhere, has finally opened a restaurant in South Maui. He brings his cutting-edge culinary style to bear on such dishes as seared shrimp on the stick and Pulehu grilled prime ribeye beef. The wine list is sophisticated, but takes a back seat to the food. Expect prices to be as high as any you've seen on Maui or anywhere else.

Renowned chef Roy Yamaguchi's first Maui restaurant has received accolades from Forbes Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler and Chefs in America, to name a few. Start with the "Town & Country" Island Style Poke, an upgrade of the ubiquitous chopped sashimi dish. People who have a hard time making decisions should order the Dim Sum Style Canoe, which includes a sample of almost every appetizer. Entrees, ranging from USD24-30, include an extensive variety of meat, fish and game as well as a few Asian-style vegetarian dishes.

The opening of this restaurant on Maui signaled the island's arrival on the international tourism scene. The popular steakhouse is a familiar sight in any major tourist or cosmopolitan area. It serves outrageously thick, juicy, savory, marbled-fat steaks—too huge to finish but too delicious to leave behind. Other entrees are offered, but they are secondary to the beef entrees. If you are a steak-'n'-potatoes kind of person, you can choose between seven varieties of potato dishes.

Some of the best and most reasonable Asian restaurants on the island can be found in Wailuku. Take, for example, this restaurant, which is located on an unremarkable street in the downtown area. It serves tasty, light Thai classics and house signature dishes in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The restaurant caters to locals of all kinds. Everyone from picky children to husky Hawaiian boys to fastidious vegetarians from Upcountry can find something on the menu. The dishes feature fresh Maui vegetables and herbs.

Located in Wailuku, the county seat and possibly the most unattractive city on the island, this restaurant is easy to miss, even when you are actively seeking it. Keep looking though, because despite the uninspired name of the place, the cuisine it is worth the trip. It is a local favorite, serving an extensive menu of Vietnamese favorites for very low prices. There is a good seafood and vegetarian selection. The Vietnamese burritos are crunchy and flavorful. Shrimp sticks and summer rolls are low fat, cost less, and taste divine.

When guests arrive at this restaurant, the waiter points out which of the dozen kinds of fish listed on the menu are currently available. Fish entrees can be served in several different ways, including Cajun style, En Bastille or Baked en Papillote. Get tips from your menu or your waiter if you're not sure how to mix-n-match the different fishes and preparation styles. Other menu offerings include steak, lobster and lamb. The wine list has won Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for seven years.
