275 Ka'ahumanu Ave (Ka'ahumanu Center) Maui and Molokai, HI 96732 United States +1 808 877 3159 |
Once upon a time this place was Mickey's & the Match, a favorite shopping spot for the local middle school set. Now it has acquired a new name and a new focus: the 18-40 year old tourist demographic. The merchandise really hasn't changed that much, though. As the teenage counter girl earnestly explains, "the tourists like their Aloha stuff." True, the Billabong shorts and Aloha shirts are mixed with suits and dresses. But still, the merchandise is far better suited to a beach than a boardroom. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tropical fashions to outfit the entire family—literally—are sold here. Vivid, lovely batik prints are cut to fit children, women and men. Several pictures on the back wall show families, all dressed in exactly the same outfit, posing against a background of tropical palm trees. If you absolutely must do the matching-outfits thing, this is a very good place to look for them. Somehow, the clothes here can flatter men, women or messy toddlers. The store itself is a rainbow of color, drawing customers in from across the fairway. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An extensive and colorful line of island-inspired children's clothes is sold at this Ka'anapali store. Most of the styles are floral print or batik, designed in Hawai'i but crafted in Bali. This unique clothing line has several retail outlets in the Hawaiian islands, but this is the only shop that specializes in children's sizes. The exterior of the shop is charming, with white lattice work around the windows. Stepping inside, you'll be no less charmed: Staff members are friendly and helpful, and the shop has a cozy, breezy atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This shop takes up a good-sized chunk of ocean view space on Front Street. It is next to the prestigious Lahaina Gallery, and one of the gallery's artists (who is also the manageress' husband) paints the promotional postcards. Top-of-the-line timepiece and accessory lines are sold here, among them Rolex, Patek Phillipe, Cartier and Breitling. The jewelry selection is also impressive, featuring minimalist futuristic designs by Honora. Review © 2007, Wcities |

658 Front St (Lahaina Wharf) Maui and Molokai, HI 96761 United States +1 808 661 4712 http://www.crazyshirts.com |
When you visit this place, you'll be shocked at all the outlandish dyes that can be used on one simple T-shirt. Shirts are dyed with all manner of strange things: Kona coffee, beer and (of all things) money are among them. You won't believe it until you see it. Even after seeing it you may not believe it; lots of the shirts look fairly normal. A second store is located two blocks away at 865 Front Street and there are four other locations throughout Maui. 69 Hana Hwy Maui and Molokai, HI 96779 United States +1 808 579 8999 |
Clothing and surf gear are sold at this Paia Town store, which caters to the international windsurf contingent. The apparel mostly follows the upscale hippy styling that's so popular in Pai'ia; you'll see a wide selection of Aloha shirts, surf shorts, flowered dresses and flirty swimsuits. While a large part of business is derived from the sale and rental of surf equipment, you'd never know it to look. The boards are somehow hidden away, while the other equipment is tucked neatly into one corner of the store. Review © 2007, Wcities |

While it's hard to name Maui's most popular store, this place is definitely in the running. The place is enormous, taking up as much space as a department store. A girl at the front door greets each new customer with a free shell lei. Every conceivable style of Aloha shirt, muumuu, sundress, grass skirt, and other tropical apparel item is for sale here. This is also a good place to stock up on macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, seashells, and any other souvenir that you promised you'd bring to the folks back home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amidst the designer boutiques and jewelry retailers in ritzy Whaler's Village, it's nice to see such an impressive selection of rare and region-specific art. Scrimshaw is an ancient sailor's art. Images are drawn onto tiny, delicate pieces of ivory using India ink. It's uncommon to find any of it these days, but this store has plenty. It features the work of several different scrimshaw artists, many of them from Hawai'i. Portraits and bios of the artists are displayed alongside their works. Other gift items are also for sale. Located across the street from the Lahaina Cannery Mall, this surf shop is just far enough removed from the Front Street strip to deter most tourists from visiting. Instead, the customers seem to be primarily locals or relocated mainlanders, wandering in after a morning of surfing or before an afternoon of it.In addition to swimsuits, surf shorts, aloha shirts and other apparel items, the store does big business in surf and boogie boards. Indeed, half the floor space is taken up by boards and other surf equipment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jewelry designer David Sacco presides over his Upcountry Maui gallery, creating stunning custom designs that specifically meet the requirements of each lucky client. While his designs have earned comparisons to the greatest names in jewelry (Cartier being one), he is different than the jewelry giants for one main reason: His pieces are created with the buyer in mind. The jewelry is hand-crafted from gold, platinum and top-quality gemstones. The designs are distinctive and artistic and genuine showpieces. There is a second gallery at the new Shops at Wailea. Anyone who thinks that Aloha wear has to be cheesy should stop by this store for an attitude adjustment. Beautiful batik prints and striking silver jewelry adorn the mannequins and the shelves. The clothes are made in Bali for the most part, out of natural rayon made from tree fiber. The clothes are perfect for the tropics: the bright colors go along with the sunny atmosphere, while the unique fabric allows the air to circulate and cool off the wearer. Two seven-foot-tall wooden cats guard the store from one side, while two equally tall giraffes man the door on the other side. These interesting carved creatures also hail from Bali. The artists who work here are thorough professionals, many of them having won awards in international competitions. As per law, they are all licensed by the State of Hawaii, which attests to the fact that the individual and the premises are sterile. It's also the official and only Skin Deep Tattoo, so do check their website for other parlors with the same name.
