The way this shopping center looks from the street is deceptive. Once you're in, you'll realize that it is much larger than it looks. The great part is, none of the shops are even remotely cheesy. As one local employee put it, "You won't find any T-shirts or bad art." A fantastic little Internet cafe opens very early in the morning. Specialty shops such as Foreign Intrigue Imports and Lei Spa open around 10a. Dining choices include Pacific'O and Hecock's.

An extensive and colorful line of island-inspired children's clothes is sold at this Ka'anapali store. Most of the styles are floral print or batik, designed in Hawai'i but crafted in Bali. This unique clothing line has several retail outlets in the Hawaiian islands, but this is the only shop that specializes in children's sizes. The exterior of the shop is charming, with white lattice work around the windows. Stepping inside, you'll be no less charmed: Staff members are friendly and helpful, and the shop has a cozy, breezy atmosphere.

When you visit this place, you'll be shocked at all the outlandish dyes that can be used on one simple T-shirt. Shirts are dyed with all manner of strange things: Kona coffee, beer and (of all things) money are among them. You won't believe it until you see it. Even after seeing it you may not believe it; lots of the shirts look fairly normal. A second store is located two blocks away at 865 Front Street and there are four other locations throughout Maui.

Front Street

Maui and Molokai, HI 96761

Historic Front Street is the main drag in Lahaina, West Maui. It runs along the shoreline, overlooking the ocean. The buildings along the road are reminiscent of Disneyland's Main Street, with colorful wooden buildings perched atop the sandy beach. You can find almost anything you would want or need here. Looking for jewelry? Original Maui Divers is your best bet. Souvenir junkies would do well to browse the super-sized Hilo Hattie's for a unique trinket. Art galleries are prevalent here, and at Simon-Jon Gallery you can purchase some island flair to brighten up your home. For shopping with a more sophisticated air, 505 Front Street is on a quieter stretch of Front Street, and home to many upscale boutiques and acclaimed restaurants. A stroll along Front Street is a pleasant way to spend the day in between catching that next wave.

For the uninitiated: Geckoes are the tiny, bright green lizards that can be spotted all over Hawai'i, both indoors and out of doors. No one ever tries to harm a gecko, since they are thought to bring good luck. They have become one of the symbols of Hawaiian pop culture, almost as ubiquitous as puka shell necklaces.

This silly store is dedicated to the gecko. Two human-sized gecko figurines are at the door. Inside, the shelves are filled with a ka-jillion gecko-imprinted souvenirs. Grass skirts and plant sticks (sans gecko) are also for sale.

Walter Lappert is a Hawai'i legend. He began a tiny ice cream business upon retiring in Hawai'i in the early 80s. That tiny business quickly exploded; at this point, it has locations all over Hawai'i. Your nose will recognize this place before your eyes spot it. The scent of the fresh-baked waffle cones wafts out of the store and drifts dozens of feet away. Inside, choose from several varieties of decadent, outrageously high-butterfat ice cream. Established in 1976, Skin Deep Tattoo is officially the oldest tattoo parlor in Hawaii. And it's not surprising. The artists who work here are thorough professionals, many of them having won awards in international competitions. As per law, they are all licensed by the State of Hawaii, which attests to the fact that the individual and the premises are sterile. It's also the official and only Skin Deep Tattoo, so do check their website for other parlors with the same name. They explicitly state they know none of those and are not affiliated to any, nor recommend them. Skin Deep Tattoo, Maui., there's pride in getting inked here!

This is one retail business that's all about island attitude. It provides an entertaining combination of professionalism and playfulness: The shop walls are covered in bizarre cartoon strips and news clippings, along with quotes from the esteemed Snorkel Bob himself. You'll find some of the best snorkel gear here, including prescription (Rx) masks. A variety of tours are available through the shop, so ask about luaus, cruises and dive trips, if you're interested. There are two other locations in Kihei and one in Napili.

Customers kick back on the outdoor patio beneath the trees. The menu features a variety of delicious sandwiches, pizzas and smoothies, along with other options. The Cafe also offers ADSL Internet access for only 15 cents a minute. Have lunch (or breakfast), rest your feet and check your email, all at the same place!

When you get the hankering for a croissant, a blueberry muffin or a cup of coffee, wander over to this long-time Lahaina favorite. Some of the most delicious baked goods on the island are served for reasonably low prices. Lunch fare includes all of the above, plus homemade soup and hearty sandwiches on fresh-out-of-the-oven bread. This place opens early and closes early, so it is a good bet for early birds.

You step into the land of Aloha when you step into this little Whaler's Village boutique. The shop is open and airy, decorated with tile floors and slow-moving fans. Browse through the selection of Aloha wear while the Hawaiian background music conjures up images of white sand and blue water. You'll find all kinds of locally made products, many of which make excellent gifts or souvenirs. Handmade wind chimes, ceramics and wooden carvings are typical of the items in stock.

Don't mix this place up with Tropical Tantrum in the Ka'ahumanu Center. Tantrum sells slightly fancy Aloha-wear for the 25-50 age bracket. Tanlines sells sexy swim-wear for bodies beautiful. Suits, tank tops, dresses, shorts and cover-ups are on display. A nice thing is, since most of the separates are either solid-colored or conservatively patterned, you can do a lot of mix-n-matching. A single tank top can be dressed up or down for street wear, beachwear or even club wear.
