275 Ka'ahumanu Ave (Ka'ahumanu Center) Maui and Molokai, HI 96732 United States +1 808 877 3159 |
Once upon a time this place was Mickey's & the Match, a favorite shopping spot for the local middle school set. Now it has acquired a new name and a new focus: the 18-40 year old tourist demographic. The merchandise really hasn't changed that much, though. As the teenage counter girl earnestly explains, "the tourists like their Aloha stuff." True, the Billabong shorts and Aloha shirts are mixed with suits and dresses. But still, the merchandise is far better suited to a beach than a boardroom. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Opened by Bill and Jane Azeka nearly 50 years ago, this neighborhood shopping center has expanded through the years to include over 50 shops and restaurants. While tourists like to shop here, it is equally popular with locals. Shops include Tropical Tantrum and Crazy Shirts. There are several restaurants; favorites include The Coffee Store and A Pacific Cafe. A post office, gas station and various other services are also at hand. Tropical fashions to outfit the entire family—literally—are sold here. Vivid, lovely batik prints are cut to fit children, women and men. Several pictures on the back wall show families, all dressed in exactly the same outfit, posing against a background of tropical palm trees. If you absolutely must do the matching-outfits thing, this is a very good place to look for them. Somehow, the clothes here can flatter men, women or messy toddlers. The store itself is a rainbow of color, drawing customers in from across the fairway. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Coach shop has a soothing atmosphere compared to many of the other designer boutiques in Whaler's Village. The interior is decorated in warm earth tones, and sales people are friendly and helpful. The shop itself is fairly small, apparently not sharing its fashionable neighbors' opinion that designer boutiques should look like vast, cold museums of modern art. You'll find a decent selection of bags, watches and jewelry by the famous designer. As with all such shops, prices are high, but so is the quality. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Surf Shorts & Boards |
69 Hana Hwy Maui and Molokai, HI 96779 United States +1 808 579 8999 |
Clothing and surf gear are sold at this Paia Town store, which caters to the international windsurf contingent. The apparel mostly follows the upscale hippy styling that's so popular in Pai'ia; you'll see a wide selection of Aloha shirts, surf shorts, flowered dresses and flirty swimsuits. While a large part of business is derived from the sale and rental of surf equipment, you'd never know it to look. The boards are somehow hidden away, while the other equipment is tucked neatly into one corner of the store. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Truthfully, this store is nothing special. But that fact does not in the least diminish its status as one of Hana's top tourist stops. Of course, the fact that it is one of only two places within 20 miles that sells little necessities such as potato chips, camera film and Kleenex definitely adds to the allure. The store is also quite the meeting spot for Hana residents. It is easy to spot them: look for the ones hanging out in the aisles for 20-minute stretches, chit-chatting about kids, work and the state of the surf on nearby beaches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This sizeable store promotes one of the world's most useful and controversial plants. It's spacious and upscale; its merchandise ranges from utilitarian to educational to flat-out comical. Bath and body products are made of hemp; T-shirts and backpacks simply bear the symbol of it. Informational flyers are available; just ask the friendly staff. Local Shops & Services |
300 Ohukai Rd Maui and Molokai, HI 96753 United States |
This place is much larger than it might seem at first. It's not easy to find; one must drive down Ohukai Road past the cluster of white stucco buildings that is the Gateway Center. The first visible part of the Commercial Center is Kihei Self Storage. Next to come into view is the center itself. Comprised of auto- body shops, wholesalers, financial services and other glamourless but necessary businesses, the center is a mainstay of Kihei business. It pays to know about the retail businesses here. Places such as Kihei Wine and Spirits, Maui Blooms and Second Chance Furniture offer desirable merchandise at prices much more reasonable than those of their downtown neighbors. It's easy to confuse this center with the Kihei Commercial Center, also located off the Pi'ilani Highway in South Kihei. The store at this center that gets the most traffic is probably Maui Clothing Outlet. Its two sister stores, Footprints and Aloha Gifts, also get plenty of business. Other stores include Maui Golf, Hawaiian Interiorz and Hula Girl. There is always a restaurant/cafe in the space just behind the 76 Station; at present it is South Shore Grindz. A number of business and personal services are also in the center. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aesthetically a notch above its across-the-street neighbor the Aloha Marketplace, this bazaar sells local arts, crafts and gift items. A number of local artisans and vendors have booths in the open-air market, while specific business such as Jabooka Jooce and Alexander's Fish & Chips are clustered around the bazaar area. A sunny outdoor patio in the center is the perfect spot for an informal meal. It is fairly easy to spot this place; it looks like a gigantic warehouse with no front doors. Located on a heavily trafficked section of South Kihei Road, this shopping center has a few major businesses. Foremost among them are Foodland, one of Maui's favorite grocery stores, and Chuck's Steakhouse, a large, busy, family-style eatery. A few specialty stores are also located here. The Rainbow Attic is a popular second-hand clothing store, known for its low-priced designer consignments. Diver's Locker rents and sells pro snorkel and dive equipment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mellow Neighborhood Mall |
1819 S Kihei Rd Maui and Molokai, HI 96753 United States |
It has been around for ages, but this mall seems to be going through a hibernation period. (As any retailer will tell you, this is normal for a Maui mall.) Currently it is home to a few restaurants, notably Coconut's Bakery & Cafe and Thailand Cuisine. Longtime clients Waldenbooks and the Kukui Theaters remain, while the opening of a new bank may signal the beginning of a commercial spurt for this sleepy little mall. If not, well, it is still the only place in South Kihei to catch a movie. Note: Credit card acceptance policy varies by merchant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in Azeka II, this place sells small, inexpensive trinkets and gifts, many of them made from local shells. Wind chimes of all different sizes, varieties and colors create a pleasant soundscape. Coasters, necklaces, home accents and an assortment of other delicate items are displayed. The attitude of this store is illustrated by two different signs. The first one reads, "Open Hours Subject to Maui Time." The second one says, "Sandy feet? Food? Drink? While it can't really be called a shopping center, this place is definitely a few steps up from the standard crafts bazaar. Fully half the merchants have their own store, and things are more sedate than at Kihei's Aloha Market. All manner of wood carvings, ornaments, jewelry and other souvenir items are on sale. A few high-class art galleries are in the back. Three informal eateries are in the center courtyard, and the tables that they share seem to be constantly crowded with shoppers taking a load off. It is easy to miss this locals-only surf shop. The location, on busy Ka'ahumanu Avenue in the Old Kahului Store, is central, but the traffic is difficult to navigate. Still, surfers may find it worthwhile, since the selection of high-quality boards, apparel and accessories is perhaps the best on Maui. Prices are also better--always a perk. After a slow start, this pretty little shopping center seems to have finally attracted some notice among the tourist contingent. The main attraction is the Maui Ocean Center, the only thing the island has that even remotely resembles a zoo or aquarium. However, plenty of other shops and restaurants are filling up the other spaces, albeit not rapidly. You can now find Maui Dive Shop, Hula Cookies and Ice Cream, and Moonbow Tropics in the center. Two seven-foot-tall wooden cats guard the store from one side, while two equally tall giraffes man the door on the other side. These interesting carved creatures also hail from Bali. They are made of bielalau wood; yes, they are for sale, and yes, they are expensive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

275 Ka'ahumanu Ave (Queen Ka'ahumanu Center) Maui and Molokai, HI 96732 United States +1 808 877 7873 |
While its service leaves something to be desired, this store has good merchandise. Women's fashions tend to be styled for juniors and 20-somethings, but the men's selection can accommodate all ages. Stylish Aloha shirts, authentic surfer-style T-shirts and designer-name board shorts are in stock. Sandals, sunglasses and other accessories are also sold. If you're heading to Makena Beach for the day and don't want to be spotted as a tourist, this is a good place to outfit yourself. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Windsurfer Shopping Spot |
137 Hana Hwy Maui and Molokai, HI 96779 United States +1 808 579 8484 / +1 800 525 6780 http://www.simmerhawaii.com |
This pleasant store is frequented by the hundreds of windsurfers that hang out at famous Ho'okipa beach nearby. It carries typical windsurfer clothes. The styles are sporty, casual and somewhat flattering. The togs are perfect for people who follow the wind around the world. A wide range of windsurfing gear is available in the back. Keep in mind though, that even though the apparel might look casual and somewhat retro, most of it is on the pricey side. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For Dead-Heads and Gourmands |
1215 S Kihei Road Maui and Molokai, HI 96753 United States +1 808 874 3779 http://boverman.com/stella_blues/ |
The hippie theme of this restaurant is somewhat deceiving. It has a lot more to offer than Grateful Dead posters and sprout sandwiches (though it has those, too). Located on the northern end of South Kihei Road, it offers high-quality organic food at prices that may seem high but are actually reasonable by Maui standards. Everything here is fresh and organically grown; meat is hormone- and antibiotic-free. Try the Banana Macadamia Nut Pancakes for breakfast. This is also a good place to enjoy a cup of coffee and dessert. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Experienced cyclists or lone wolves may prefer to steer clear of the large tour groups that bike down Haleakala. Instead, experience its glory alone or in a small group. This company is pleased to provide rental bikes and accompanying equipment. Prices are low—USD25 per person for the day. If you desire a bit more direction, see about booking a day trip down the mountain from 6,500 feet; and the downhill trip from the summit of Haleakala (10,000 feet above sea level. Please check for the pricing. Review © 2007, Wcities |
