Hana Hwy Surf

Surf Shorts & Boards
69 Hana Hwy
Maui and Molokai, HI 96779
United States
+1 808 579 8999
Clothing and surf gear are sold at this Paia Town store, which caters to the international windsurf contingent. The apparel mostly follows the upscale hippy styling that's so popular in Pai'ia; you'll see a wide selection of Aloha shirts, surf shorts, flowered dresses and flirty swimsuits. While a large part of business is derived from the sale and rental of surf equipment, you'd never know it to look. The boards are somehow hidden away, while the other equipment is tucked neatly into one corner of the store.

Truthfully, this store is nothing special. But that fact does not in the least diminish its status as one of Hana's top tourist stops. Of course, the fact that it is one of only two places within 20 miles that sells little necessities such as potato chips, camera film and Kleenex definitely adds to the allure. The store is also quite the meeting spot for Hana residents. It is easy to spot them: look for the ones hanging out in the aisles for 20-minute stretches, chit-chatting about kids, work and the state of the surf on nearby beaches.

Jewelry designer David Sacco presides over his Upcountry Maui gallery, creating stunning custom designs that specifically meet the requirements of each lucky client. While his designs have earned comparisons to the greatest names in jewelry (Cartier being one), he is different than the jewelry giants for one main reason: His pieces are created with the buyer in mind. The jewelry is hand-crafted from gold, platinum and top-quality gemstones. The designs are distinctive and artistic and genuine showpieces. There is a second gallery at the new Shops at Wailea.

Several local artists and craftsmen display their works here. That's nothing new; most of the galleries and stores on Maui feature some local artists. However, this place is characterized by its artists' cooperative spirit and a pledge to offer reasonable prices. Woodworks, ceramics, tablewares, home ornaments and clothing accessories are among the wide selection of items for sale. The merchandise varies from simple to ornate, but all of it features a distinctly Hawaiian style.

There is a lot of floor space, and every bit of it is covered with merchandise. Bikinis, one-pieces, separates and cover-ups in every conceivable style are available. If you want something showy, you'll definitely find it. Frilly, sporty, flowered or plain, just take your pick. You can even have a suit custom-made. The local girls at the register are usually pretty cheery.

The soothing atmosphere of this place is augmented by whirring fans and gently burbling fountains. Upon walking in, one can shake off the lethargy brought on by the humid Maui weather and get down to the serious business of shopping.

All kinds of locally made merchandise is available, including hand-sewn quilts and lovely stained glass. The entire line of Paradise Fragrances is for sale. Among the more expensive items are the Ni'ihau shell leis, made on the Forbidden Isle out of hundreds of tiny shells hand-strung onto many strands.

Local artist Sherri Reeve is known for her vivid watercolors depicting Hawaiian marine life. Original paintings, prints, gift cards and even designer T-shirts are available in her Upcountry store. Sherri's work can be seen in various other galleries and shops, but this store has the widest selection by far. Brightly colored yet somehow gentle, her style is very different from most local artists'. It focuses on simple beauty rather than hyper-color surrealism.

Both the local and the imported pieces are stunning and perfectly crafted with the highest quality. Settings are made of platinum or 18-karat gold. The staff is extremely friendly and laid-back, far different from jewelers on the mainland. The store has a pet parrot named Mango. He is an extremely vocal bird, but he only speaks to women, and only on special occasions.

Experienced cyclists or lone wolves may prefer to steer clear of the large tour groups that bike down Haleakala. Instead, experience its glory alone or in a small group. This company is pleased to provide rental bikes and accompanying equipment. Prices are low—USD25 per person for the day. If you desire a bit more direction, see about booking a day trip down the mountain from 6,500 feet; and the downhill trip from the summit of Haleakala (10,000 feet above sea level.
