Hawaiian grown, Hawaiian attitude |
1941 S Kihei Rd (Kihei Kalama Villages) Maui and Molokai, HI 96753 United States +1 808 879 1950 http://www.badassmaui.com/ |
The legend of this company dates back to the early days of Hawaiian colonization, when some truly "bad" donkeys were used to haul backbreaking amounts of beans up and down the treacherous mountain trails. This establishment is not just a cafe. It is a souvenir store and retailer in its own right, offering an impressive selection of cigars, logo shirts, hats and of course, rich Kona blends. Stop in if you need to buy a gift for the folks back home, or if you just want a cup o' joe to get your day started right. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Colorful kites and windsocks |
120 Maunaloa Highway P.O. Box 10 Maui and Molokai, HI 96770 United States +1 808 552 2364 http://www.molokai.com/kites/ |
This unique shop creates a wide array of nylon kites and windsocks. These beautiful kites are superbly constructed from taffeta nylon and fiberglass frames. Designs include the "whale's tale," a dancing hula girl, a gorgeous butterfly and the stunning "happy dragon." Bring home a colorful windsock as a special gift. You can choose from several original designs. The Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (the koi, Hawaii's state fish) consists of bright blue, red, yellow, turquoise and black panels interwoven to create a five-foot long "fish." Many designs have symbolic significance, like the pineapple (hospitality) and Kahili rainbow feathers (good luck). The factory gives free tours and complimentary kite-flying lessons, too. She also creates glassworks, gift cards and a number of other items. She opens her studio to the public for pre-arranged tours. The studio is located just outside of Kaunakakai, overlooking the Au'au Channel. A guesthouse in the back is sometimes rented out to visitors seeking a quiet getaway. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Geckos galore - and more! |
2435 Ka'anapali Parkway (Whalers Village) Maui and Molokai, HI 96761 United States +1 808 661 1114 |
For the uninitiated: Geckoes are the tiny, bright green lizards that can be spotted all over Hawai'i, both indoors and out of doors. No one ever tries to harm a gecko, since they are thought to bring good luck. They have become one of the symbols of Hawaiian pop culture, almost as ubiquitous as puka shell necklaces. This silly store is dedicated to the gecko. Two human-sized gecko figurines are at the door. Inside, the shelves are filled with a ka-jillion gecko-imprinted souvenirs. Grass skirts and plant sticks (sans gecko) are also for sale. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sundries, Souvenirs, Food & Drink |
1 Mill Rd Maui and Molokai, HI 96713 United States +1 808 248 8261 |
If possible, this place seems to attract more tourists than the Hasegawa General Store. It draws them in with an assortment of souvenirs such as T-shirts, hats and the like. Of course, plenty of necessities and sundries are also for sale, including toiletries, snack food and liquor. The selection of candy is impressive: this store has li hing mui in dozens of different varieties. It also rents out newly released videos. The atmosphere is hectic and somewhat confused. The staff stays safely behind the counter as much as possible. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Necessities & accessories priced sky-high |
5165 Hana Hwy Maui and Molokai, HI 96713 United States +1 808 248 8231 |
Truthfully, this store is nothing special. But that fact does not in the least diminish its status as one of Hana's top tourist stops. Of course, the fact that it is one of only two places within 20 miles that sells little necessities such as potato chips, camera film and Kleenex definitely adds to the allure. The store is also quite the meeting spot for Hana residents. It is easy to spot them: look for the ones hanging out in the aisles for 20-minute stretches, chit-chatting about kids, work and the state of the surf on nearby beaches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

While it's hard to name Maui's most popular store, this place is definitely in the running. The place is enormous, taking up as much space as a department store. A girl at the front door greets each new customer with a free shell lei. Every conceivable style of Aloha shirt, muumuu, sundress, grass skirt, and other tropical apparel item is for sale here. This is also a good place to stock up on macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, seashells, and any other souvenir that you promised you'd bring to the folks back home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Offering a variety of souvenirs |
Ala Malama P.O. Box 828 Maui and Molokai, HI 96748 United States +1 808 553 5734 |
This attractive gift shop is located next to the town grocery store. A new-ish paint job and a decent window display sets it apart from most of the neighboring stores. The wares are standard for any island souvenir store. You'll find T-shirts, straw hats, casual resort wear, woven baskets and gift cards. When in doubt about what to buy, go for one of the Aloha shirts. They're more authentic than most of the styles found in Honolulu or Maui, and you'll see local men in them every day. Located in Azeka II, this place sells small, inexpensive trinkets and gifts, many of them made from local shells. Wind chimes of all different sizes, varieties and colors create a pleasant soundscape. Coasters, necklaces, home accents and an assortment of other delicate items are displayed. The attitude of this store is illustrated by two different signs. The first one reads, "Open Hours Subject to Maui Time." The second one says, "Sandy feet? Food? Drink? No problem...Come in and enjoy yourself." Only on the islands... Review © 2007, Wcities |

With three galleries, a 4,000-square-foot workshop and an online store, this is Maui's premiere source of antique engravings and maps. In addition, the retailer offers a unique collection of classic Hawaiian artworks, either reproduced or recreated by renowned artists. Husband and wife duo Charlene and Alan Walker began the business in 1978, and have traveled the world searching for engravings and maps ever since that time. Their workshop is housed in a historic building in Lahaina; the three retail stores are located in Maui's top tourist destinations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amidst the designer boutiques and jewelry retailers in ritzy Whaler's Village, it's nice to see such an impressive selection of rare and region-specific art. Scrimshaw is an ancient sailor's art. Images are drawn onto tiny, delicate pieces of ivory using India ink. It's uncommon to find any of it these days, but this store has plenty. It features the work of several different scrimshaw artists, many of them from Hawai'i. Portraits and bios of the artists are displayed alongside their works. Other gift items are also for sale. Several local artists and craftsmen display their works here. That's nothing new; most of the galleries and stores on Maui feature some local artists. However, this place is characterized by its artists' cooperative spirit and a pledge to offer reasonable prices. Woodworks, ceramics, tablewares, home ornaments and clothing accessories are among the wide selection of items for sale. Do not confuse this place with its namesake in Haiku. This market has a restaurant, cafe, ice-cream parlor and retail stores selling sundry items. If you are driving through town and need to grab a bite before you hit the highway to Hana, this is where you should go—there is no place to eat for many miles ahead. Popular and easily accessible, this market even sells souvenirs. Shop or eat? That is the question! Review © 2007, Wcities |
