Once upon a time this place was Mickey's & the Match, a favorite shopping spot for the local middle school set. Now it has acquired a new name and a new focus: the 18-40 year old tourist demographic. The merchandise really hasn't changed that much, though. As the teenage counter girl earnestly explains, "the tourists like their Aloha stuff." Tropical fashions to outfit the entire family—literally—are sold here. Vivid, lovely batik prints are cut to fit children, women and men. Several pictures on the back wall show families, all dressed in exactly the same outfit, posing against a background of tropical palm trees. If you absolutely must do the matching-outfits thing, this is a very good place to look for them. Somehow, the clothes here can flatter men, women or messy toddlers. While a large part of business is derived from the sale and rental of surf equipment, you'd never know it to look. It is easy to miss this locals-only surf shop. The location, on busy Ka'ahumanu Avenue in the Old Kahului Store, is central, but the traffic is difficult to navigate. Still, surfers may find it worthwhile, since the selection of high-quality boards, apparel and accessories is perhaps the best on Maui. Prices are also better--always a perk. Longboards and shortboards by Patagonia, Stewart, Surf Tech and the house brand, Lightning Bolt, are for sale. Swimwear and aloha shirts are also available. Boards can be rented for the day or week. This interesting little museum/shop has a long history in Maui. For a while it was without a permanent home, but it finally settled at the Maui Mall. Paper airplanes, tin cans airplanes, and all kinds of memorabilia relating to airplanes are on display. The proprietor, known as the "Tin Can Man," has achieved some notoriety for his amazing skill at fashioning ornaments out of used cans.
