Hawaii's Biggest Event
Various venues
Maui and Molokai, HI 96761

+1 808 589 1771
http://alohafestivals.com/aloh...
Hawaii's biggest (and possibly best) festival ends up on Maui after starting in Oahu one month earlier and traveling to each of the less-populated neighbor islands. Exhibits, shows and street parties occur throughout the Valley Isle. Past themes include 'Ka 'Uhane o ka Loea', which means 'The Spirit of the Masters' in English. It honored great crafters, artists and artisans of Hawaii's past and present. All events from August to October are free and staffed by volunteers. Call or check the Web site for more information.

Apparently unsatisfied with hosting the Hawaiian International Film Festival for a few days, Maui introduced its own festival. The festival will keep its location in the lush fantasy resort community of Wailea. A number of works from local, national and international filmmakers and production teams are screened. Also part of the program are special banquets, panel discussions and even a closing-night gala. An advance screening program known as Big Buzz takes place each Wednesday at the Castle Theater. Ticket prices vary by show.

Here's one invitational that everyone wants to attend. Eight of the top NCAA teams in the league come to Maui to compete in a nationally televised tournament. A relatively tiny number of people can actually come to the live final game, which is held at the Lahaina Civic Center (capacity 2,400), but between 5 and 10 million people watch the games on ESPN. The entire event is a fundraiser for Chaminade University. It started in 1984 and has corporate sponsorship until 2015. Tickets start at USD40 per day.

Among marathon runners, this is one of the favorite competitions. And no wonder! The course follows the coastline, and most of the time participants can catch a glimpse of sea and splashing waves beyond the pack of runners. Part of this event's prestige is also due to its long-running history. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners in several categories. The Maui Taco 5K takes place the day before this marathon, and is a bit of a warm-up exercise for serious runners. Check the website for race details.

Held at the inviting yet formidable Kapalua Plantation Course, this winter golf event is a favorite among both pro players and their fans. See the best in men's golf take on the long, scenic links of Maui's western fields. Once the site of vast sugar plantations, Kapalua is now one of golf's mainstays and a "must play" for visiting golfers. Plan early to get tee times on the adjacent Bay Course.
