The best way to spend a day in South Maui is to drive the coastline and stop at a few of the innumerable white-sand beaches. While many of these beaches are adjacent to hotels, all beaches in Hawaii are open to the public. As long as you don't use hotel chairs or water toys, you're free to relax on the perfectly maintained beaches-—and afterward, to purchase a cocktail from a hotel bar.

Beginning at the busier end of South Kihei Road, you'll find the popular Kamaole Beach Parks. These three centrally located parks offer great barbecue facilities and are popular amongst locals. Further along the road is Kiawekapu, a small but lovely swimming beach. Just a bit further down (right where Kihei becomes Wailea) is Ulua Beach. It is one of the South Side's most popular snorkeling beaches. Follow Wailea Alanui all the way down and, at the tail end of a rather desolate stretch of road, you'll find the jewel of Maui: Makena State Park. Home of Big Beach and Little Beach, this is one of the island's best surfing and body-boarding spots.

If you want to outfit yourself for a day at these beaches, there are several different places to go. The best known snorkel outfitters are Boss Frog's and Snorkel Bob's, while Maui Divers offers low-cost scuba equipment rental. Rent surf equipment at any of a dozen places including Second Wind Surf & Sail and Maui Boogie Man.

Kamaole Beach Parks

Popular South Kihei Beaches
S Kihei Rd
Maui and Molokai, HI 96753

The "Kams," as they are known, span about a mile along the coast of South Kihei. On sunny days, the Kams fill up with adults, kids and entire groups of all ages. Frisbees sail, stereos blast, and tiny children splash in the equally tiny waves. The small waves create an easy spot to launch from for ocean kayaking fun. While these beaches are often disparaged as being too crowded or too dirty, they are head and shoulders above any mainland beach. The grass is green, the sand is soft and the sun is seemingly always out.

Keawakapu Beach

2960 South Kihei Road
(at the Mana Kai Maui)
Maui and Molokai, HI 96753

Located behind the Mana Kai Maui Hotel on the border of Wailea and Kihei, this beach is small but still fairly popular. It offers spectacular sunning and great facilities. Beach parking is available. The half-grass, half-sand beach is less than a minute's distance from the parking lot. As far as swimming goes, this is a good place to get refreshed, but not particularly good for water sports. There's a great deal of lava rock just below the surface, and although the waves tend to be small, getting knocked against the rock is still a danger.

With its seemingly endless expanse of golden sand beach and perfect bodysurfing waves, this beach is a must-see. Big Beach is the number one spot for sunbathing and swimming. Little Beach, a five-minute hike up and over rocks, is a world-famous nude beach. It also has the best boogie-boarding and bodysurfing on the island; hence the large numbers of young local boys dispersed amongst the nudists. Always watch the weather reports and posted signs. Makena can get rough, and the shallow break makes it easy to get bumped around in the waves.

This is one retail business that's all about island attitude. It provides an entertaining combination of professionalism and playfulness: The shop walls are covered in bizarre cartoon strips and news clippings, along with quotes from the esteemed Snorkel Bob himself. You'll find some of the best snorkel gear here, including prescription (Rx) masks. A variety of tours are available through the shop, so ask about luaus, cruises and dive trips, if you're interested. There are two other locations in Kihei and one in Napili.
