A good place to catch flat-head and garfish |
End of Pier Street Altona Melbourne, VIC 3018 Australia http://www.fishnet.com.au/ |
In summer the pick of the catch here is garfish. If that is your target and the winds are northerlies or light westerlies, then you can be virtually guaranteed a nibble, especially if you use a light bran bait. March is a good time for some massive flat-head, while squid are also plentiful in early autumn. For bait, pump along the foreshore for soft worms, while yabbies can be pumped near the pier on the banks at low tide. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A feast of fishing after dark |
End of Liddesdale Avenue Frankston Melbourne, VIC 3199 Australia |
Sometimes the best fishing action can be found here after dark. Barracouta are often spotted in large schools between March and June. Place yourself under one of the lights, using whitebait under a float, and if no bites are forthcoming, move on to the next section after 10 minutes. Other fish caught here quite often include flat-head, garfish and rock cod. Bay trout, snook and snapper are also around during the summer months. For younger anglers, good fun can be had in summer just on dusk, when flat-head and small snapper become active near the end of the pier. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular fishing spot |
Beach Road Mordialloc Melbourne, VIC 3195 Australia |
Mordialloc Pier is where many of Melbourne's anglers have learned the ins and outs of the sport and it can still get quite crowded with youngsters trying their luck. Another common sight is the more experienced, older anglers using long poles from the hours before dawn to catch mullet, barracouta and trevally near the entrance to the Mordialloc Creek. Further along the pier, flat-head and garfish are caught regularly, while after dark it is worth trying for snook under the lights. The preferred baits are peeled prawns, sand worms and pipis. Wonderful shore based fishing |
Schnapper Point Mornington Melbourne, VIC 3931 Australia |
Mornington Pier is deservedly acknowledged as being amongst the very best places in Melbourne for shore based fishing. It is productive all year round and all day long, with the deep water usually rewarding the patient angler. Flat-head can be taken most of the time, but usually only if smaller seas prevail. Try near the rocky break wall for big snapper which come close to shore in big seas caused by west and south westerly winds. Barracouta can also be caught on lures, while leather-jackets, red mullet, whiting and parrot fish are usually around as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |
