Located in a converted terrace house, this groovy bar is one of the few in the area not doubling as a pub or restaurant. After collecting your drink from the front bar, meander into the lounge, adorned with art by local university students. Outside is a small courtyard/beer garden where live bands play on weekend afternoons. There is beer on tap, cocktails and good coffee. No meals are prepared on site, but you can order at the bar for food to be brought in from nearby restaurants. Quite a nice arrangement!

Apocalypse

It's all Greek to me
First Floor, 189 Lonsdale Street
Melbourne, VIC 3000
Australia
+61 (0)3 9654 0666
Apocalypse is very popular, particularly late at night and on weekends. While most orthadiko (stand up bars) are powered by DJ-driven music, Evan Dion, the owner here has folkloric groups performing on Sundays. Apocalypse is a spacious upstairs room overlooking Lonsdale Street's treetops. Behind the bar a larger than life Johnny Walker sign is flanked by twin, ceiling high water tanks full of liqueur bottles bobbing in electric blue water. Two ceramic Atlas statues observe Melbourne's young Greeks, ouzo in hand, grooving to the modern Greek music. No food is served as the focus is on music, dancing and drinking.

Harking back to the grand old days of cinema going in the 1930s, the Astor Cinema is all about atmosphere. It is alone worth a visit for its art deco architecture, inviting foyers and comfortable chairs. However, it also has the fundamentals of cinema going right, with a huge screen and excellent sound quality. The Astor shows both classic films and recent releases in a double feature format each evening. Look out for special screenings of 70mm classic films—a pleasure to watch.

Unlike the Regent Theatre opposite, the Athenaeum deals pretty exclusively in live theatre. However, its productions range from Bell's Shakespeare Company to Winnie-the-Pooh to one-man shows. There is a small theatre upstairs and the main theatre downstairs seats slightly fewer than 1000 at full capacity. The National Trust classified building is decoratively rather more restrained than some of the old city centre theatres. Refreshments are available.

The Australian Boys Choir has developed significantly since its modest beginnings 60 years ago as a high school choir in Victoria. It is one of three vocal groups under the Australian Boys Choral Institute. Recognised as the country's oldest secular boys choir, it has upheld its choral excellence through a traditional training scheme that concentrates on an applicant's musicianship, rather than his age. The group has performed extensively throughout the US and took part in America Fest—a celebration of male choirs. The group performs nationally on a regular basis and can occasionally be seen with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Chatting during performances is frowned upon, but that is as far as the snobbery goes. At other times, this is a great place for conversation. Owner Michael Tortoni presents music he believes in rather than following fads, earning him accolades for his contribution to the jazz community. This is a very cozy bohemian hang out. A large room upstairs provides gallery space, also often used for flamenco and yoga classes or Latin music nights. Guitars hang from the flaky concrete and mosaic tiled walls, encasing the colorful recycled timber chairs and tables. Grab a beer and a book from the bookshelf and chill out in the courtyard. Start with the Tapas of the day or beer of the month. Assorted Chilean wines and a jug of aphrodisiac Sangria are real refreshers. There is no smoking in the dining/viewing area, but has a pleasant lounge to which smokers can retire. Planning and booking ahead is advisable--there is a mailing list that is worth joining. Empire Productions purchased Desperate and Dateless Ball (D&d Ball) in 2003. If the name is misleading, then you're not to blame. However, don't expect to find losers and singles here. The crowd is hip, glamorous and young. Ever since Empire Productions has taken over, the Dnd Ball has hosted some of the most exciting events in Melbourne, like the Dnd Ball. Get ready for that 70's look as the Dnd Ball will play music from that era. So get out your dancing shoes and party the night away with disco music.

Dale & Danny's Blue, known as the Next Blue, is one of the top bars in Melbourne, frequented by corporate groups, celebrities, musicians and nightclubbers. This dimly lit, two-storey, New York style installation has boldly re-adopted the speak-easy environment. Moving slide projections and abstract works cover the lofty walls. Be sure to study the series of re-labelled whisky bottles tracing the evolution of jazz. Tapas style meals with an Asian influence are served between 6p and midnight. A selection of dumplings, lemongrass prawns and paté on mini toasts and some Martinis would keep you craving for more.

The Esplanade Hotel, affectionately known as the "Espy", is a landmark of Melbourne's music and drinking scene. Grungy, almost seedy, the Espy attracts a mixed crowd of pub enthusiasts, hip young things and older ones just enjoying the atmosphere. No stylish modern design here. The Espy is all about sticky carpets, sweaty live music, playing pool or drinking in the front bar with its Bay views. There is also a beer garden, and comedy acts and bands appear regularly. The quaint restaurant is a cosy place to fill up on nutritious and cheap food. It is especially strong on soups, noodles and rice dishes. Admission to the front bar is free; there may be a cover charge for bands and comedy performances in the Gershwin Room.

The Forum opened the same year as the Regent--1929. But whereas the Regent is a rather classic style theatre, the Forum is architecturally an oddball. You cannot but notice it as you pass down Flinders Street. And the inside is equally unusual and ornate. These days it does not attempt to compete with the many old theatres in the city area. Instead the main, downstairs area is cabaret in style, though seating some 800 odd--a big cabaret!

The owners of Frostbites took a rather sedate, old-fashioned pub--and turned it into a thriving entertainment complex of sorts. There are live bands almost every night of the week, resident DJ, functions area, meals section, sidewalk tables, a huge bar and, not to mention, Frostbites' sweet, alcoholic "slurpees" (after which the venue is named). During the day, Frostbites is a quieter place where it is easy to chat with friends and nibble on a focaccia. At night, it turns into something a little more raucous. Be warned!

This small theatre is a minor miracle in design. Wherever you sit there is the sensation of being right in the thick of the action. Like the Playhouse it is a major venue for the Melbourne Theatre Company, with the consequent expectation of getting your money's worth. It holds going on for 400 in curved, amphitheatre style seating, with some consideration for wheelchairs. However short you might be, it is impossible to get other than a good view of proceedings at the Fairfax. Refreshments including alcohol are available and can be pre-ordered to avoid interval queues.

Like many of Melbourne's old theatres, Her Majesty's is not really equipped for the large scale productions expected of theatre these days. However some productions, such as Chicago, actually manage to make lack of space seem like a virtue, utilising techniques like singers performing their numbers while hanging off ladders. The Limerick Arms still retains its Irish feel, albeit with plenty of flowers and a modern, uncluttered interior. Jazz musicians perform regularly, while the pub's Friday night sessions are among the best to be found in the city. The redeveloped gallery will include a new water wall, a Federation Hall and the Grimwade Gardens. It will also boast better physical access, teaching facilities and an improved range of eateries.

Night Cat

1960s chic in the 21st century
141 Johnston Street
Melbourne, VIC 3065
Australia
+61 3 9417 0090
With the opening of The Night Cat in 1994, Melbourne's cafe culture finally came of age. It is a fusion of a comfortable lounge atmosphere, an elegant meeting place, complete with dance floor and sophisticated music that will have many people toe tapping and dancing to styles of music they would not usually listen to. Friday and Saturday nights are particularly busy and you may have to queue. On Sunday evenings an older, local crowd descends, creating a real community feel. The large bar serves basic drinks, house beer and wine. Focaccias and cakes are also available.

Old Colonial Inn

An unpretentious watering-hole
127 Brunswick Street
Fitzroy
Melbourne, VIC 3065
Australia
+61 (0)3 9417 2711
Located at the start of the trendy Brunswick Street café strip, the Old Colonial Inn is an oasis, free of the oh-so-funky decor and attitude that have become de rigueur in this part of town. It is not dowdy, just unpretentious. Featuring a beer garden out the back, as well as a front bar, it regularly hosts local musicians and acoustic nights, as well as a weekly comedy night on Mondays. Among the tasty dishes on offer are butternut and potato soup, Hokkien noodles tossed in peanut sauce, Turkish pide with dips and focaccias.

+61 (0)3 9529 1644
A slapped together establishment that is like a cross between a café and a lounge room, you always feel as though you are among friends at Orange. The decor is orange--mixed with some dark wood and eclectic bits and pieces. What makes Orange unique is the constantly spinning turntable that takes pride of place in the centre of the room, and the occasional live performances. Homey, healthy and filling, the dishes have a vegetarian leaning and are designed to satisfy. Think mixed dips or mee goreng and check out the daily specials. Fully licensed.

The Playhouse is just one of the venues inside the Victorian Arts Centre. Seating almost 900, it is the larger of the two theatres used by the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC). It cannot but have a good name as a consequence--the MTC rarely puts a foot wrong. Being a modern theatre viewing from both circle and stalls is fine as seats are well staggered. There is wheelchair access. Refreshments including alcohol are available and can be pre-ordered to avoid interval queues. Admission: Prices, including concessions, vary according to type and time of performance. Subscribing to the MTC's season is excellent value.

When Dave Taranto had the idea for a comedy night on Wednesdays, little did he know how long the tradition would last. His suggestion, made soon after the building's foundation in the late 1800s, created The Cheese Shop, now one of Melbourne's favorite comedy venues. The venue still thrives despite competition from bigger establishments. Its success seems to be the relaxed atmosphere and the appreciative audiences. International comedians as well as most of Australia's leading comics perform here. On other nights there is acoustic and world music. The popular bistro-style lunch menu is now also served in the evenings.

In use since 1854, major restoration in the late 1980s saw the Princess Theatre reopen in 1989 capable of providing the technology modern shows demand. Its ornate façade is in keeping in with the surrounding area that includes, nearby, the historic Windsor Hotel. The Princess is yet another of the theatres in Melbourne that show her English roots. Used for big production musicals, it holds the record for the longest playing musical in Melbourne. And don't forget it is haunted.

With its unfinished, rough brick facade, this bar/café and band venue aims for a rustic chic look. It draws an upmarket, but relaxed crowd who come to sit at the well-stocked bar, eat in the adjoining café or see a band or DJ. Its prime location, on the intersection of bohemian Brunswick and Johnston Streets, makes it a popular people watching spot. With plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants nearby it is an ideal meeting-point. The coffee shop serves standard café food but is particularly famous for its French pastries and cakes.

Melbourne, VIC 3000
Australia

On the surface a purple emerald is all glitz and glamour. But on closer inspection, imperfections emerge. The same goes for The Purple Emerald bar, but this is not a bad thing. A few rips in the couches just add to the down-to-earth, friendly feel. Lounges, lounges and more lounges provide comfortable spots to spend the evening. The retro styling, surprisingly enough, does not feature a lot of purple. Patrons from business people to Goths and hippies enjoy live jazz from Wednesday to Sunday nights. Drink prices are standard which means you can be groovy without going over budget.

This seminal member of Melbourne's burgeoning Irish scene boasts a restaurant, bar, live bands, regular competitions and drinking clubs, a bottle shop, and a quarterly newsletter. Along with token Irish paraphernalia, the interior is adorned with wooden tables, floors, benches and booths helping to further amplify the shrill sounds of fiddle and guitar. Roasts, stews, platters, seafood and poultry in generous servings, ideally to be enjoyed on a cold winter's evening. And, of course, there is plenty of Guinness on tap and pint-sized Irish beers to boot.

The Regent might look old, but it is actually about the most modern of the old theatres in Melbourne, first opening in 1929. Its lavish décor, both in the theatre and in its foyer areas, brings to mind the West End of London. A small but attractive feature is generous room for legs. After many successful years in the city, Ruby Red is enlivening this quiet patch of Abbotsford. On Fridays and Saturdays swing music bands create a lively atmosphere. To really get into the groove, take swing, jive or west coast lessons upstairs. A scheme pioneered by Ruby Red and DEAC (Disabled Employment Action Centre) helps to train disadvantaged youngsters in culinary skills. The creative Asian/Italian inspired menu has captured the steady lunchtime clientele. Antipasto or the charred artichokes, baked garlic and paprika, make good starters. The mains have a definite Japanese influence. House wine and beer and basic spirits are available.

Although it has been around for over a decade, Saloon just keeps rolling on as one of Melbourne's most popular places for a night out. It comes with all the relics of the wild west - barrels form bars, the stools are like saddles and American paraphernalia adorns all corners of the building. There are live bands most nights, while the front bar offers a more serene retreat, with pool tables a popular fixture out the back. Depending what night you are there, you may be charged a small admission fee, but this varies.

A place for great food and drink, and a would-be cinema as well! The atmosphere is comfortably retro--only just avoiding kitsch. Staff is friendly and helpful. Many regulars bring out-of-town visitors who want to get a "feel" of Melbourne. Watch the sumo wrestling on television or catch a classic film during regular beer garden screenings. The food is a little pricier than at most pubs around town, but the quality surpasses the typical pub meal. Eat in the bar, bistro or beer garden.

There are also special talks by zookeepers on nocturnal wildlife and barbecues available for an evening meal. Or you can ring in advance and book a picnic hamper. Admission: Adults AUD15.80; concession AUD11.70; children AUD7.80; family AUD42.60.

Melbourne is proud of its landmark Eiffel Tower, a sight to be seen, especially at night as birds attracted by the light circle the spire. The spire sits atop the Theatres Building, comprising a series of gallery and theatre spaces. You can wander through and visit the State Theatre, the George Adams Gallery and the Performing Arts Museum. There is also the Hamer Hall, a venue for major artists and the base for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. You can relax on the sloping lawns outside, where free concerts are held during summer. Admission is free unless attending a show.

The vinyl-era music scene lives again at white rabbit Record Bar. This unique establishment is a second-hand record shop, bar, café and music venue all rolled into one. The décor is an eclectic mix of retro finds, including orange pendant lights, string-bead curtains and cushions in bright geometric-print fabrics. Patrons can lounge by the fire or dine in the beer garden while enjoying big fried breakfasts, toasted snacks, imported beers and, of course, music from yesteryear. The place really comes alive on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when guest DJs rock the place to a retro beat. -Jo-Anne Woodward
