Classic cinema |
1 Chapel Street Corner Chapel Street and Dandenong Road Melbourne, VIC 3182 Australia +61 (0)3 9510 1414 http://www.astor-theatre.com/ |
Harking back to the grand old days of cinema going in the 1930s, the Astor Cinema is all about atmosphere. It is alone worth a visit for its art deco architecture, inviting foyers and comfortable chairs. However, it also has the fundamentals of cinema going right, with a huge screen and excellent sound quality. The Astor shows both classic films and recent releases in a double feature format each evening. Look out for special screenings of 70mm classic films—a pleasure to watch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Palace Cinema Como |
Level 1, Como Centre, Corner of Toorak Rd and Chapel Street South Yarra Melbourne, VIC 3141 Australia +61 3 9827 7533 http://www.palacecinemas.com.a... |
At the heart of Melbourne's shopping district is the Cinema Como - an oasis where you can drop your shopping bags and rest weary feet in front of a movie suited to the discerning viewer. This cinema is more art than action, more controversial than commercial, and is home to the annual 'French Film Festival'. Very chic, very South Yarra. Cinema Como is part of the Palace Cinema chain. A stylish cinema experience |
9 Gordon Street Elsternwick Melbourne, VIC 3185 Australia +61 (0)3 9524 7900 http://www.classictheatre.com.au |
The Classic holds onto the feel of the old pre-war building it is located in but blends it with a stylish modern look. Most importantly, here you will find the fundamentals of cinema going—big screens, comfortable seats and good sound. Five screens show a mix of quality mainstream and selected art house films and, living up to its name, every week a different classic film is shown. Admission: Adult AUD11.50; concession tickets vary. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Reclaims its popularity |
1341 Dandenong Road, Chadstone Shopping Centre Melbourne, VIC 3148 Australia +61 3 9563 1988 http://hoyts.ninemsn.com.au |
As one of the first multiplex cinemas in a suburban shopping centre, Hoyts Chadstone became a Melbourne favourite. Yet with bigger and better complexes springing up and vying to out-do each other, the Chadstone outlet needed revamping. The new 16 cinema complex, featuring Cinemaxx technology, with its wall-to-wall super screens, crystal clear surround sound and Dreamaxx stadium seating, fits the bill perfectly. Also new are six La Premiere screening areas, which make for a purely indulgent experience. Enjoy complimentary popcorn, soft or hot drinks, and relax in plush armchairs or private balcony seats. A pub for locals and out-of-towners |
33 Errol Street North Melbourne Melbourne, VIC 3051 Australia +61 (0)3 9328 1983 |
A place for great food and drink, and a would-be cinema as well! The atmosphere is comfortably retro--only just avoiding kitsch. Staff is friendly and helpful. Many regulars bring out-of-town visitors who want to get a "feel" of Melbourne. Watch the sumo wrestling on television or catch a classic film during regular beer garden screenings. The food is a little pricier than at most pubs around town, but the quality surpasses the typical pub meal. Eat in the bar, bistro or beer garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |
