Devoted regular clientele |
94 Swan Street Richmond Melbourne, VIC 3121 Australia +61 (0)3 9425 9644 |
Located in a converted terrace house, this groovy bar is one of the few in the area not doubling as a pub or restaurant. After collecting your drink from the front bar, meander into the lounge, adorned with art by local university students. Outside is a small courtyard/beer garden where live bands play on weekend afternoons. There is beer on tap, cocktails and good coffee. No meals are prepared on site, but you can order at the bar for food to be brought in from nearby restaurants. Quite a nice arrangement! Review © 2007, Wcities |

It's all Greek to me |
First Floor, 189 Lonsdale Street Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 (0)3 9654 0666 |
Apocalypse is very popular, particularly late at night and on weekends. While most orthadiko (stand up bars) are powered by DJ-driven music, Evan Dion, the owner here has folkloric groups performing on Sundays. Apocalypse is a spacious upstairs room overlooking Lonsdale Street's treetops. Behind the bar a larger than life Johnny Walker sign is flanked by twin, ceiling high water tanks full of liqueur bottles bobbing in electric blue water. Two ceramic Atlas statues observe Melbourne's young Greeks, ouzo in hand, grooving to the modern Greek music. No food is served as the focus is on music, dancing and drinking. Inspiring choral music |
Mont Albert Melbourne, VIC 3127 Australia +61 (0)3 9888 4898 http://home.vicnet.net.au/~abc... |
The Australian Boys Choir has developed significantly since its modest beginnings 60 years ago as a high school choir in Victoria. It is one of three vocal groups under the Australian Boys Choral Institute. Recognised as the country's oldest secular boys choir, it has upheld its choral excellence through a traditional training scheme that concentrates on an applicant's musicianship, rather than his age. The group has performed extensively throughout the US and took part in America Fest—a celebration of male choirs. The group performs nationally on a regular basis and can occasionally be seen with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Melbourne's best jazz |
25 Bennetts Lane Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 (0)3 9663 2856 http://www.bennettslane.com/ |
This cosy bar is also Melbourne's premier jazz venue, run by jazz connoisseurs for jazz connoisseurs. On busy nights, punters crowd into every available space, including the stairs. Chatting during performances is frowned upon, but that is as far as the snobbery goes. At other times, this is a great place for conversation. Owner Michael Tortoni presents music he believes in rather than following fads, earning him accolades for his contribution to the jazz community. The jam sessions with visiting international artists after their Concert Hall performances are legendary. Cheese and fruit platters, cake, focaccia, basic spirits and house wine are available. Bridie O'Reilly's has succeeded in transporting the charm and character of an Irish pub down under. Artefacts from the Emerald Isle are strategically scattered around, and the appropriately accented bar staff add to the authenticity. Bands such as The Shamrocks and Celtic City Sons perform regularly. On St Patrick's Day (17th March) the party spills onto the street for a traditional "Paddy" celebration. There is a selection of Irish beers on tap, including Harp and Beamish. A bar menu features traditional dishes like steak and kidney pie. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This unpretentious neighbourhood pub offers something for everyone. Featuring a pleasant lounge with an open fireplace plus an outside eating area, the Builder's Arms is well set up for all seasons. The small dance floor heaves into action on Thursday nights when it becomes home to gay alternative Mecca, Q and A, as well as hosting disco nights on Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, there are poetry readings on Sundays, acoustic music on Wednesdays, videos on Tuesdays and fun and games on the Monday night Scrabble-Trivial Pursuit-checkers spectacular. Street Latin and street smarts |
95 Johnston Street Fitzroy Melbourne, VIC 3065 Australia +61 (0)3 9416 0022 |
Thursday night Latin dance classes at the Bullring are becoming mighty popular. So much so, the participants often find themselves elbowing space on the dance floor—and the Bullring is not a small venue. Its popularity could be attributed to the relaxed atmosphere of the classes. They are informal, fun and you can practise your new moves with a live Latin band straight after the class. Most students come back to practise, drink, eat and be merry on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bohemian living |
354 Smith Street Collingwood Melbourne, VIC 3066 Australia +61 (0)3 9417 7626 |
This is a very cozy bohemian hang out. A large room upstairs provides gallery space, also often used for flamenco and yoga classes or Latin music nights. Guitars hang from the flaky concrete and mosaic tiled walls, encasing the colorful recycled timber chairs and tables. Grab a beer and a book from the bookshelf and chill out in the courtyard. Start with the Tapas of the day or beer of the month. Assorted Chilean wines and a jug of aphrodisiac Sangria are real refreshers. Mains include the popular Mole Poblano (chicken in a spicy chocolate sauce). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The only place dedicated to bringing a touch of the trend-setting English club scene to Melbourne. In contrast to many 19th century English pub-style establishments, Club UK focuses on contemporary British popular culture, right down to the toilet doors - marked 'Sid' and 'Nancy'! Animated characters Wallace and Grommit watch over the bar and an autographed photograph of comedian John Cleese is by the door. DJs pump out music ranging from progressive house to Britpop and northern soul. During Happy Hour (5pm-7pm Thursdays and Fridays) there are specials on all English pints and basic spirits. The Continental Cafe combines good food, great coffee, efficient service and cool music, with a tad of attitude thrown in as well! This is also a hotspot for live music, attracting the bigger names and crowds. Silver-edged chairs sit by crisp white-clothed tables, served by smart waiters. You cannot book, but have fun waiting for a table on a stool by the window watching the Greville Street scene. The food is a little classier than standard café menus. Dishes such as eye fillet with onion mash, duck confit and roast veal, add variety to the simpler pizzas and pastas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dale & Danny's Blue, known as the Next Blue, is one of the top bars in Melbourne, frequented by corporate groups, celebrities, musicians and nightclubbers. This dimly lit, two-storey, New York style installation has boldly re-adopted the speak-easy environment. Moving slide projections and abstract works cover the lofty walls. Be sure to study the series of re-labelled whisky bottles tracing the evolution of jazz. Tapas style meals with an Asian influence are served between 6p and midnight. The Esplanade Hotel, affectionately known as the "Espy", is a landmark of Melbourne's music and drinking scene. Grungy, almost seedy, the Espy attracts a mixed crowd of pub enthusiasts, hip young things and older ones just enjoying the atmosphere. No stylish modern design here. The Espy is all about sticky carpets, sweaty live music, playing pool or drinking in the front bar with its Bay views. There is also a beer garden, and comedy acts and bands appear regularly. 426 Chapel Street South Yarra Melbourne, VIC 3141 Australia +61 (0)3 9827 7401 http://www.frostbites.com.au/ |
The owners of Frostbites took a rather sedate, old-fashioned pub--and turned it into a thriving entertainment complex of sorts. There are live bands almost every night of the week, resident DJ, functions area, meals section, sidewalk tables, a huge bar and, not to mention, Frostbites' sweet, alcoholic "slurpees" (after which the venue is named). During the day, Frostbites is a quieter place where it is easy to chat with friends and nibble on a focaccia. At night, it turns into something a little more raucous. Be warned! The Limerick Arms still retains its Irish feel, albeit with plenty of flowers and a modern, uncluttered interior. The best elements of a bar and nightclub are combined in this venue. The bar downstairs is sheltered from the dance floor and, other than the music level, feels like an independent bar. A comedy club with a difference |
135 Victoria Parade (Collingwood) Melbourne, VIC 3066 Australia +61 (0)3 9419 4197 |
When Dave Taranto had the idea for a comedy night on Wednesdays, little did he know how long the tradition would last. His suggestion, made soon after the building's foundation in the late 1800s, created The Cheese Shop, now one of Melbourne's favorite comedy venues. The venue still thrives despite competition from bigger establishments. Its success seems to be the relaxed atmosphere and the appreciative audiences. International comedians as well as most of Australia's leading comics perform here. On other nights there is acoustic and world music. The popular bistro-style lunch menu is now also served in the evenings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Provincial Hotel |
299 Brunswick Street Fitzroy Melbourne, VIC 3065 Australia +61 3 9810 0042 http://www.provincialhotel.com... |
With its unfinished, rough brick facade, this bar/café and band venue aims for a rustic chic look. It draws an upmarket, but relaxed crowd who come to sit at the well-stocked bar, eat in the adjoining café or see a band or DJ. Its prime location, on the intersection of bohemian Brunswick and Johnston Streets, makes it a popular people watching spot. With plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants nearby it is an ideal meeting-point. The coffee shop serves standard café food but is particularly famous for its French pastries and cakes. A gem at the heart of the city |
189 Flinders Lane Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 3 9650 7753 |
On the surface a purple emerald is all glitz and glamour. But on closer inspection, imperfections emerge. The same goes for The Purple Emerald bar, but this is not a bad thing. A few rips in the couches just add to the down-to-earth, friendly feel. Lounges, lounges and more lounges provide comfortable spots to spend the evening. The retro styling, surprisingly enough, does not feature a lot of purple. Patrons from business people to Goths and hippies enjoy live jazz from Wednesday to Sunday nights. Drink prices are standard which means you can be groovy without going over budget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not as "quiet" as they may suggest |
271 Racecourse Road Flemington Melbourne, VIC 3031 Australia +61 (0)3 9376 6232 http://www.thequietman.com.au/ |
This seminal member of Melbourne's burgeoning Irish scene boasts a restaurant, bar, live bands, regular competitions and drinking clubs, a bottle shop, and a quarterly newsletter. Along with token Irish paraphernalia, the interior is adorned with wooden tables, floors, benches and booths helping to further amplify the shrill sounds of fiddle and guitar. Roasts, stews, platters, seafood and poultry in generous servings, ideally to be enjoyed on a cold winter's evening. And, of course, there is plenty of Guinness on tap and pint-sized Irish beers to boot. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining, jazz and dancing |
413 Johnston Street Abbotsford Melbourne, VIC 3067 Australia +61 (0)3 9417 3331 |
After many successful years in the city, Ruby Red is enlivening this quiet patch of Abbotsford. On Fridays and Saturdays swing music bands create a lively atmosphere. To really get into the groove, take swing, jive or west coast lessons upstairs. A scheme pioneered by Ruby Red and DEAC (Disabled Employment Action Centre) helps to train disadvantaged youngsters in culinary skills. The creative Asian/Italian inspired menu has captured the steady lunchtime clientele. Antipasto or the charred artichokes, baked garlic and paprika, make good starters. The mains have a definite Japanese influence. House wine and beer and basic spirits are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Been around for over a decade |
134 Toorak Road South Yarra Melbourne, VIC 3141 Australia +61 3 9820 3395 |
Although it has been around for over a decade, Saloon just keeps rolling on as one of Melbourne's most popular places for a night out. It comes with all the relics of the wild west - barrels form bars, the stools are like saddles and American paraphernalia adorns all corners of the building. There are live bands most nights, while the front bar offers a more serene retreat, with pool tables a popular fixture out the back. Depending what night you are there, you may be charged a small admission fee, but this varies. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular outdoor entertainment venue |
21 Linlithgow Avenue Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 (0)3 9281 8000 |
This versatile venue is also a popular tourist attraction. Its unique structure consists of a thin acoustic canopy attached to a cobwebbed frame of steel cables. This structure protects the audience and stage from outside noise and unpredictable weather. The shielded area provides fixed seating of up to 2,000 and the surrounding lawns can accommodate up to 10,000. In the past it staged The Australian Ballet and has served as a temporary ice-skating rink. International rock acts have also performed sell-out shows here. Its most famous event is the annual Christmas Eve Carols by Candlelight, attracting thousands of Melburnians. Review © 2007, Wcities |

New venue with an historic address |
131 Queen Street Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 (0)3 9670 1271 http://www.turfaccountants.com.au |
This up class city venue offers everything from booze to bands plus a world-class restaurant. The decor seeks to capture the mood of the mid-seventies with the story of the robbery and its aftermath retold in the surroundings. The restaurant takes its commitment to food and wines very seriously. The extensive wine list features handpicked Australian wines with many offered by the glass. The menu changes seasonally and shows Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences. The ambience—and prices—are geared to business dining. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great atmosphere |
71a Acland Street St Kilda Melbourne, VIC 3182 Australia +61 0 3 9534 1942 / +61 0 3 9534 4527 |
Despite Vineyard's no advertising policy it is always bustling. This casual yet trendy establishment is completely transformed when the glass doors are open and patrons spill onto the patios and surrounding lawns. Bands perform outside on Sunday afternoons and inside at night. For an entree or light meal, try the salmon and baby rocket or Mediterranean rice balls with mango chutney. More substantial mains include fish and chips, chicken, pasta and grilled lamb shashliks, steaks and hamburgers. Salads come in large serves and make a nice accompaniment. There are freshly squeezed juices, hot drinks and a well-stocked bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wild Oak Cafe |
232 Ridge Road Olinda Melbourne, VIC 3788 Australia +61 (0)3 9751 2033 www.wildoak.com.au |
This restaurant is popular with locals and visitors for its atmosphere and eclectic mix of well-prepared and innovative food. A lovely nursery is also part of the complex. The atmosphere is lively and airy. Sit at a terracotta table with views of the nursery or enjoy the courtyard tables. A Coonara stove adds warmth during cold weather. Jazz bands perform on the last Sunday of every month from January to April. The diverse, refreshing menu changes seasonally. Even simple fare is transformed into something special by chef, Isiah Sang. The mouth-watering desserts will make you thankful that the fare is relatively light. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eclectic |
245 Gertrude Street Fitzroy Melbourne, VIC 3065 Australia +61 (0)3 9416 2689 |
Definitely something different. A very civilized place to meet and chat. Thick velvet curtains and a simple black door hide a most opulent interior. Once inside, the rococo mirrors will arrest your senses, as will the gilt-framed paintings hanging on fleur-de-lis wallpaper, elaborate lampshades, velvet covered antique couches and the pink fountain bubbling in the center of the room. A rear courtyard has a greenhouse function room, complete with stone bar and trees growing through the roof. Martini, wine or perhaps some liqueur may help you adjust to the décor! Food options range from light snacks to main meals. Review © 2007, Wcities |
