The children's toy market has been taken over by multinationals and multiplexes. That is why it is so refreshing to find a neighborhood toy store like Bright As A Button. Bright As A Button is personal with a capital "P". A try-before-you-buy atmosphere encourages children to play before the parents pay. Staff is always on hand for a friendly chat and there are often free lolly bags handed out while you are shopping. As is the case with many smaller stores, Bright As A Button is a little more expensive--but worth it.

Established way back in 1853, Dimmeys has overcome many hurdles (wars, fires and several owners) to remain as one of Melbourne's best loved discount stores. It may be known as Forges in Footscray, Best Buys in regional Victoria, and Northern Warehouse Centres in Queensland, but the Dimmeys store located under its famous (if kitsch) clock tower on Swan Street is where the Dimmeys heart beats. Something of a local institution, this store stocks a range of affordable, down-to-earth men's casual wear as well as shirts and ties. Melbourne, VIC 3000

The predominant feel of this jewelery shop is art deco--with many pieces being inspired by this design era. There are strings of beads made from a variety of stones, including lapis lazuli, turquoise and amber. These are draped in cabinets amongst chunky silver bangles from India, and rings with moonstones and garnets. There are delicate enamel cloisonné flowers to dangle from ears or necklaces, in soft pink, purple, cornflower blue or yellow. You will also find modern silver brooches in the shape of cats and fish, and even a solid silver bracelet of skulls.

The opulence of Crown Casino and entertainment complex makes a spectacular home for Melbourne's Gianni Versace store. The celebrated Italian designer lived and died fast. However the clothes (both men's and women's) are his legacy. Adorning the bodies of the rich and famous, they remain imprinted on our minds (who could forget the Liz Hurley safety pin dress?). His Melbourne store is no exception to the rule with its stunning accoutrements, elegant staff and world renowned Versace clothes. Whatever you do, do not forget your credit card.

Perruche

The evening wear store
437 Chapel Street
South Yarra
Melbourne, VIC 3141
Australia
+61 (0)3 9824 1848
While Chapel Street fashion stores try to keep at the cutting edge of what is hip and groovy, there is something more traditional about Perruche--its grand bay style windows with evening dressed mannequins--curtain-draped fitting rooms and catwalk viewing area. Perruche is often filled with wide-eyed young women selecting formal dance wear and parading like princesses. Rather than one designer, Perruche presents a variety of styles and names to keep the most finicky shopper satisfied. There is also a selection of lingerie so you can feel sensational inside and out the folds and flounces of your evening gown.
