A place that is worth more than a visit |
517 Malvern Road Toorak Melbourne, VIC 3142 Australia +61 3 9827 0822 |
As is common with most of the food stores in the Hawksburn shopping precinct, once you step through the doors of the Authentic Village Baker, it is difficult to head home again. You will want to order your bread then settle down for a cosy cup of coffee, a fresh bun and the daily newspaper. Authentic Village Baker replicates the serenity and charm of provincial style European bakehouses. The certified, organic flour, wild yeast and refined salt are flown from France. The wood fired oven harks from Spain -and the locals absolutely love it. Can you smell the aroma? You can either take away or eat the freshly baked foodstuff right then and there. A real delight |
358 Brunswick Street Fitzroy Melbourne, VIC 3065 Australia +61 (0)3 9416 0091 |
This fusion of bakery, cafe and restaurant excels in all categories. The wooden tables and showbiz posters make Babka's typically Brunswick Street, but distinguished by a relaxed, un-contrived style. Staff are charming and accommodating. People queue quite happily for hours to secure the excellent breads and pastries. For a something different, try spicy Georgian baked beans, delicate blintzes or sweetcorn fritters. The gourmet sandwiches, pies or the superb salad niçoise make a good lunch. The teas and coffee go well with the decadent cakes and flans. Australian wines available by the glass. Review © 2007, Wcities |

4 Bluff Road Black Rock Melbourne, VIC 3193 Australia +61 3 9589 0555 |
Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate - if this sugary-sweet substance is what is closest to your heart, then you cannot go past Black Rock Chocolates. This outlet is nothing more than a local pusher (I mean, seller), but the range is exemplary, so much so you tend to hang around and enjoy a coffee, a muffin and a chocolate or two. And, you are more than welcome to stay. Black Rock Chocolates stocks famous names, such as Lindt, Newmans, Chocolatier, Guylian and Baci. Look out for the collection of teapots in the front window. Fine wines--with a lot of spirit |
1030 Burke Road Balwyn Melbourne, VIC 3103 Australia +61 (0)3 9817 2257 http://www.boccaccio.com.au |
'A well-stocked bottle shop' is the best way to describe Boccacio Cellars. As the name would suggest, the continental selection here is especially sublime with numerous imported beers and a vast range of Italian wines available in obscenely huge flagons. The price tags are also highly competitive - making a visit to Boccaccio Cellars a worthwhile one. If you cannot find what you want, ask them--it is more than likely on the shelves (you just walked past it). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The drive-through bottle shop (commonly attached to a pub/hotel) is a popular tradition in the cities and country areas of Australia. Bootleg is a new name in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne--three outlets in Carnegie, Seaford and Rosebud. Along with wine, beer, spirits and drive-through convenience, they offer great value if you choose to buy your wines by the dozen, as well as a corporate delivery service to meet the needs of executive parties and functions. No doubt, we will be seeing more of Bootleg in the near future. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Making bread big business |
329 Lygon Street Carlton Melbourne, VIC 3053 Australia +61 (0)3 9510 9520 (Head Office) |
Who would have thought baking bread was a sideline business for Greg Brown? Long after his restaurant of the same name has closed down, Browns Bakeries are simply booming with nine in total and more to come--Albert Park, Brighton, Carlton, Chadstone, City, Hampton, Hawksburn, Hawthorn and Toorak. Greg Brown has also recently opened Browns Bouchon, a petit farmhouse café. For bargain hunters, daily bakery items are reduced to half-price after 3p--a good way to cut down on an otherwise high price for bread. Additional branches: In various locations across Melbourne. At Brunetti's Italian Pasticceria you will find the most amazing cakes, tortes, slices, pastries and biscuits. They make special occasion cakes to die for - the Torronata (nougat cake) is made from vanilla sponge and kirsch, piled high with Chantilly cream and nougat pieces. There are hazelnut and coffee tortes and golden puffs of profiteroles smothered in chocolate. Bite sized melt-in-the-mouth biscuits made of butter, almond and hazelnut are the perfect partners for an after-dinner coffee. Eat in the adjoining café or take home to stun dinner guests. An Hispanic deli delight |
25 Johnston Street Fitzroy Melbourne, VIC 3065 Australia +61 (0)3 9419 4420 |
With a dominance of Italian products in Australia, Casa Iberica is a particularly unique discovery--humble and unassuming at the Hispanic end of Johnston Street. The groceries are magnificent--oils, paprika, cooking utensils and fresh deli goods like bacalao, olives, jamon, queso and other such delicacies. When you walk through the door, you are instantly transported into a world of Spanish and Portuguese culture. It is a great deli find--and one that beckons its shoppers back again and again. Centre of Melbourne's Chinese community |
Little Bourke Street (Between Swanston and Russell streets) Melbourne, VIC 3000 Australia +61 (0)39 658 9658 (Visitor Information Centre) http://www.visitvictoria.com |
Located in the heart of the city in Little Bourke Street, Chinatown is the focus for Melbourne's Chinese community. It is home to a plethora of Chinese and other Asian restaurants and curiosity shops. Colourful Chinese New Year celebrations are held here annually. Since the 1850s gold rush that brought many Chinese to Victoria, Melbourne's Chinatown has grown to become the only continuous Chinese settlement in Australia. Among today's restaurants and shops, there is still a fascinating sense of the brothels and opium dens that prevailed in bygone days. To discover more of the area's history visit the Chinese Museum or take the Chinatown Heritage Tour. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Arabic and Turkish cuisine may be best known for kebabs, dips and other savory dishes, but Middle Eastern countries also offer fabulous desserts, as Constantinople Cakes would like to point out. There is a range of imported lollies, pastries and cakes, such as spanakopita (a spinach and feta pastry), or tiropita (a kind of cheese pie). Coffee is also served. The pioneer of competitive liquor prices in Melbourne is Dan Murphy. With the introduction of his stores, resembling warehouses more than bottle shops, the drinkers of Melbourne enjoyed all their favourite wines, beers, spirits and liqueurs at prices rarely seen. The bulk buying mentality of his outlets has resulted in an impressive range of Australian wines and even rarities from abroad (often difficult to find in a market dominated by Australian product). Fashion, Bookshops and Italian Fare |
Lygon Street between Grattan and Elgin Streets Melbourne VIC 3053 Australia http://www.lygonst.com |
Flanked by plane trees, sidewalk cafes and a scattering of iron-laced verandas, Lygon Street offers relaxed shopping just a few blocks from Melbourne's center. This was once the heart of Melbourne's Italian community and you can still find Italian groceries and delis (King and Godfree at number 293-297, Lygon Food Store at 263 and Donnini's Pasta at 398). There are also Australian fashion stores (including Sportsgirl, Witchery and Country Road) and quality shoe shops. Readings (309), one of Melbourne's finest small bookstores, still thrives, right across the road from Borders (380), as do colorful independents, such as giftshop poppyshop (283) and The Original Lolly Store (239). – Jo-Anne Woodward Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian food emporium |
482 Sydney Road Brunswick Melbourne, VIC 3056 Australia +61 3 9380 4777 |
One thing Italians know how to do very well is cook. This food emporium's supermarket section has the staples - tinned vegetables, pasta, arborio rice, and olive oil by the gallon. You will also find delicious relishes and pickles like sun-dried tomatoes with chilli, wild marjoram, basil and garlic. The bakery has fresh Italian breads, including focaccia, Pastadura and Ciabatta, as well as sweet biscuits, such as Cannoli with ricotta filling. If that is not enough, stop by the deli and cheese sections for fresh produce. The liquor section stocks local, as well as Italian wines and spirits. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you can fight your way past the crowds into this tiny shop, you can watch as they hand-pull taffy in the traditional old-fashioned way, throwing it over a hook on the wall and drawing it out until it shines. The sweet-smelling translucent mass of sugar is transformed into traditional rock, bull's eyes and lollipops. Adults and children alike will find it hard to resist the jars full of bright yellow, red and green sweets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is one lolly jar that will have you coming back for more - Mentone Lolly Jar is an old-fashioned confectionery experience. The whole store glistens and sparkles with the foil wrappers of the lollies. The shelves are stacked from floor to ceiling and the ambience is one of cosy quaintness. Along with traditional local and imported lollies, you will find creamy chocolates, gift baskets and just enough space to enjoy a cup of coffee or maybe a tall, flavoured spider drink (ice-cream and soft drink)- just like your grandma used to make it. Pick your own delicious blueberries or stop by and purchase them freshly picked. This is a great idea for a family or school holiday outing as children are welcome to help (and taste!). If you pick your own, blueberries are very reasonable (AUD6 a kilo or AUD8 if ready picked). While you are there, pick up some juicy hydroponic tomatoes (AUD3 a kilo). Although frozen blueberries are available year round, call first to ascertain availability of produce, particularly if the weather has been wet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Although Natural Tucker breads are now available in health food stores across Melbourne, paying a visit to this small, rustic bakery and buying the loaves fresh from the oven is a real treat. Only freshly stone-ground organic and bio-dynamic flour is used and all breads are leavened with genuine sourdough and baked in a wood-fried oven. No yeast, animal products (including eggs and dairy), cane sugar or additives are used. The Schwarzbrot, a delicious and hearty little brick of a rye bread, is completely wheat-free. Thresherman's Bakehouse at first looks more warehouse than café. Inside however, the charm of the bakehouse with its abundant displays of home baked food becomes evident. The historic building was literally gutted and the café designed to complement its shell--a unique and successful blend of the past with modern convenience. This gem of a supermarket is a smashing find for anyone who loves Asian cuisine or would like to try their hand at cooking something a little more interesting. It functions perfectly as your average, run-of-the-mill general supermarket but the Asian component is particularly strong--bean curd cakes, gigantic bags of imported rice, savoury Asian snacks and frozen goods--even fresh durian fruit. If you are not buying, it is still a pleasure to browse around, harness some inspiration and inspect the interesting range of stock available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Little Saigon |
Victoria Street Melbourne Australia |
One of the main centers of Melbourne's Vietnamese community, Victoria Street is the place to buy Asian fruit and vegetables, clothing and dining ware. The blocks between Hoddle and Church Streets are crowded with colorful Vietnamese stores selling everything from paper lanterns and crockery to jewelry and watches. East of Church Street, a small community of Asian furniture and homewares shops has blossomed, following the success of Chinese antique furniture store Orient Express (449). A short tram ride east brings you to Victoria Gardens shopping center (corner Victoria and Burnley Streets), with over 75 shops, including Melbourne's only IKEA. – Jo-Anne Woodward Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Asian grocery store specializes in simulated meat products made from yam, gluten and soya beans. There are vegetarian sesame 'chicken' balls, vegetarian 'scallops' and 'bacon' bits. In addition to the so-called 'meat' products, you will find beverages like coconut soya drink, iced green tea and sour plum juice. Staples such as noodles, tapioca and rice flours, sit amongst the more unusual--fermented bean curd and dried fungus. Review © 2007, Wcities |
