At the turn of the century, when Melburnians talked about a shopping expedition in style, they said they were doing "The Block". When The Block Arcade opened in 1891, it established itself as one of Melbourne's grandest arcades. In fitting style this architectural masterpiece was completely restored in 1988, and is now a National Trust Treasure. It features thirty fascinating speciality shops and boutiques. The intricate mosaic floor and beautiful central dome will transport you to an era when parasol wielding ladies and bowler hatted gentleman strolled by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A notch above the average shopping mall |
Corner Toorak Road and Chapel Street South Yarra Melbourne, VIC 3141 Australia +61 (0)3 9825 2299 |
This shopping centre rides on its exclusivity. Expensive designer stores such as Keith Matheson, Midas Shoes and Joh Bailey Hairdressers are residents here and, no doubt, their prices reflect the rent. In the heart of South Yarra, the Como Centre appeals to the person who does not usually like shopping centres. Its Cinema Como specialises in art house movies. There is a Body Bronze tanning salon, as well as heaven on earth in the form of Jurlique Como Wellness Sanctuary. Como even acts as home to a television station. Yes, a true shopping indulgence. The biggest development in Melbourne since the gold rush, Crown Entertainment Complex opened up a previously rundown area of the Yarra River and turned it into a gold mine for retail outlets. The four levels of the complex house restaurants, bars, designer fashion shops, entertainment venues, a 24-screen cinema complex, a five-star hotel - and of course the Casino, which attracts an international clientele and is now Victoria's biggest tourist attraction. The Showroom, Odeon Cabaret, Mercury Lounge and Heat Discotheque often host international acts. An age limit of 18 years applies to the gaming rooms and bars. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Established way back in 1853, Dimmeys has overcome many hurdles (wars, fires and several owners) to remain as one of Melbourne's best loved discount stores. It may be known as Forges in Footscray, Best Buys in regional Victoria, and Northern Warehouse Centres in Queensland, but the Dimmeys store located under its famous (if kitsch) clock tower on Swan Street is where the Dimmeys heart beats. Funnily enough, the Jam Factory Shopping Centre was once a jam factory but, since then, has seen many make-overs in its attempts to draw the shoppers from Chapel Street. In recent years, with the addition of a 1,600 seat Village cinema, it would appear the Jam Factory has been successful although it is still very small compared to outer suburban shopping centres. Come to see and be seen! |
Toorak Road and Chapel Street Melbourne, VIC Australia |
The South Yarra shopping precinct is the place to go in Melbourne for fashion and style. A favourite haunt of the city's trendiest black-clad caffe latte sippers, it also draws celebrity visitors to Melbourne, looking for that special little outfit. Chapel Street's long shopping strip of predominately fashion boutiques is punctuated with equally stylish cafés, restaurants and bars, so there is no danger of suffering thirst or hunger while you shop. The Jam Factory centre contains cinemas, restaurants and the huge Borders book and music emporium. The Windsor end between High Street and Dandenong Road is more laid back and raffish with its many quirky second hand dealers and bargain shops. A side street, Greville Street is Melbourne's headquarters of alternative cool, while Commercial Road is home to many gay and lesbian retailers. Toorak Road continues Chapel Street's fashion theme but is more upmarket and exclusive. Whether you come for serious shopping or just to stroll, browse and enjoy the passing parade, a visit to South Yarra makes for an enjoyable day out. If you want to look the part, put on your coolest clothes (black is always in style) and join the crowd. Review © 2007, Wcities |

So much for the beach and bikinis |
Acland Street to Fitzroy Street Melbourne, VIC Australia |
In recent years, St Kilda has undergone a revamp. The trendies have moved in and the more unbecoming street life has moved out. St Kilda is Brunswick Street by the water; a tight-knit community of actors (both practising and waitering) and other artistic types. In St Kilda, the breeze is gentle and the pace of life one or two steps slower. It is a pleasure to meander through its shops — a collection of hip clothing, gift and homeware stores — and even visit its popular Esplanade Market; one of the best places for one-off craft creations. If you cannot be bothered shopping, throw back a beer or two. When you think of St Kilda, you think of beach--not the most beautiful of beaches in Australia but Melbourne's most famous. Locals, backpackers and transients call St Kilda Beach their 'home' and, once you discover its sunny appeal, so will you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the main centers of Melbourne's Vietnamese community, Victoria Street is the place to buy Asian fruit and vegetables, clothing and dining ware. The blocks between Hoddle and Church Streets are crowded with colorful Vietnamese stores selling everything from paper lanterns and crockery to jewelry and watches. East of Church Street, a small community of Asian furniture and homewares shops has blossomed, following the success of Chinese antique furniture store Orient Express (449). A short tram ride east brings you to Victoria Gardens shopping center (corner Victoria and Burnley Streets), with over 75 shops, including Melbourne's only IKEA. – Jo-Anne Woodward Review © 2007, Wcities |
