Africa in April began in 1986 to recognize the heritage of more than 50 percent of Memphis' population. The Vendor's Marketplace Festival in Handy Park on Beale offers handcrafted goods and cultural artifacts. The festival takes place for four days during the third week in April at locations along Beale Street and throughout downtown Memphis.

Zydeco is Creole dance music, born among the Cajun population in southwest Louisiana, blending Cajun music with rhythm & blues and soul. Its driving force is the accordion, with the addition of electric bass, horns and keyboards. During the Zydeco Festival, some of the most famous groups in the U.S including Terrance Simien, Boozoo Chavis, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Rockin' Dopsie appear at the various clubs on Beale Street. Held in mid-February, one admission fee gets you a wristband that allows entrance into any of the Beale Street clubs. This is a very popular event with locals and tourists. The Cooper-Young neighborhood is inhabited by a mix of artists and young professionals, and it includes more than its share of coffee bars, galleries and trendy restaurants. Each fall, an arts and crafts festival fills the neighborhood's streets and draws visitors from across the Mid-South area. Craftsmen exhibit and sell their wares, including pottery, metal works, sculpture and tie-dyed clothing. Local bands entertain on two stages, and area restaurants sell fare, such as corn dogs and funnel cakes, plus lots of beer.

Thousands of fans from around the world make the pilgrimage to Memphis each August to commemorate the anniversary of Elvis' death. Death Week, as it is commonly referred to by locals, includes numerous tributes to the late singer held across the city, including concerts by Elvis impersonators, look-a-like contests, film festivals and tours. The culminating event is the candlelight vigil at Graceland on August 15 and continues into the next morning of the 16th, the day Elvis died.

The month-long Memphis in May festival incorporates a broad mix of cultural and entertainment events, and the Great Wine Race may be one of the most unusual of the officially sanctioned activities. Local restaurants enter teams of employees in a relay race that requires them to run with fully loaded trays of filled wine glasses, passing the trays off to team members like batons. The accompanying parade and awarding of prizes to local winemakers are also worth seeing.

The Blues Foundation, a Memphis-based organization that brings together 107 blues societies from around the world, sponsors this event, which includes both a conference on the blues (housed at the Radisson Hotel) and performances by artists competing in the challenge in many of the clubs on Beale Street. A USD12 wristband allows wearers entrance into all the clubs on Beale, while USD10 covers admission to the final competition at the Daisy Theater. The event culminates in the Keeping the Blues Alive award ceremony at the Radisson.

This massive football stadium can seat up to 62,000 spectators. In 1965, the Liberty Bowl College Football Classic shifted from Philadelphia to Memphis, and that is how this stadium got its new name. Ice hockey is a relatively new import to the sunny South, but this exciting game of rapid scoring and rough-and-tumble play caught on with Memphians very quickly. The Riverkings are members of the Central Hockey League and play teams from Macon, Georgia to San Antonio, Texas. Games are held in the Mid-South Coliseum, in the Fairgrounds on Central in Midtown. Promotional events include a USD50,000 giveaway chance at weekday games. Games are held most weekend nights and some mid-week evenings from November to mid-March. Ticket prices vary.

Each year, Memphis honors a different country with this month-long celebration. Various events around the city celebrate the arts and culture of the chosen country, from art exhibits to dance exhibitions to special dishes served in area restaurants. Several events are held in May that are related to Memphis in May, but not to the specific country being honored; these include the World Championship Barbecue Contest and the Beale Street Music Festival. It all ends with the Sunset Symphony on the banks of the Mississippi River.

This crafts fair is one of the largest in the country. Artisans come from all over to compete for a spot to display and peddle their wares in Audubon Park. Food stalls provide sandwiches, barbecue and ice cream, and live musical performances also take place throughout the event. This tournament is a major February event on the ATP tour, and is held in the elegant Racquet Club facility in East Memphis. Past tournaments have featured such stars as Michael Chang, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Todd Martin. The tournament benefits the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. It has funded a research chair named for Tim Gullikson, former coach of Pete Sampras and victim of brain cancer. Tickets range from USD5 for qualifying events to USD260 for a tournament-week pass.

Held in Tom Lee Park in conjunction with Memphis in May, this event has gained nationwide prestige and is often featured on TV shows, such as the 'Today Show', 'Good Morning America' and 'Prime Time Live'. More than 90,000 people attend the festival each year. Called the "Superbowl of Swine", this festival offers cash prizes to a winner that is more than USD61,050. Teams compete in the categories of whole hog, shoulder and ribs, and these teams must have qualified in other contests around the country in order to compete here. Other events include the Miss Piggy Contest, hog calling and a barbecue sauce competition. Admission: Adults USD8 (at the gate), Children (6 & under) Free.
