A. Schwab's Dry Goods Store

Old-timey dry goods store
163 Beale Street
(between Second and Third)
Memphis, TN 38103
United States
+1 901 523 9782
Remaining much the same as it was when it opened in 1876, this store is the kind where farmers would have gone every six months to stock up on supplies. The sacks of flour and seed have been replaced with Elvis souvenirs and voodoo accessories, but the wooden floors still squeak under your feet, while the dusty tables hold size-72 overalls and an eclectic assortment of merchandise. Not always open in the evening when Beale Street is crowded, this store alone is worth a daytime visit.

Sacks 2 for Kids

Gently-used children's clothing, some never worn
5026 Park Avenue
(Eastgate Shopping Center)
Memphis, TN 38117
United States
+1 901 682 5969
This is a good place to buy gently used clothing for children, from infants through size 20 for boys and junior/preteen for girls. Better organized than a church bazaar, this store uses tickets on these outfits to tell how much they will be marked down week by week - if they do not sell first. The best value by far are the 0 to 9 month outfits many of which still have the retail tags on them. Other items on offer include a small selection of toys, shoes and books, all on consignment.

Other chapters around the country sell cottage craft goods made by people who must work from home because of disability or other reasons. The Memphis organization does too, but also runs a successful tearoom that serves lunch on weekdays. A selection of three main courses is offered: classics such as salmon loaf, juicy beef tenderloin, or a vegetable plate. The $8 price includes a small green salad, choice of iced tea or coffee and the day's dessert. Set in a charming house in Midtown, no fancy decor here, but you feel like you're a guest in someone's (large) dining room.
