Arcade

Nouveau pizza in a diner setting
540 South Main Street
Memphis, TN 38103
United States
+1 901 526 5757
This is a Memphis tradition, with very non-traditional food. It has occupied this corner on Main since 1919, but the cuisine has been updated with spectacular, prize-winning pizza recipes (featuring pesto, goat cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes), and Portobello mushroom sandwiches at lunch. It is a great place to hop off the trolley between Beale Street and the Civil Rights Museum.

Café Samovar

Ukrainian restaurant with belly dancing
83 Union Avenue
(between Front Street and Second Street)
Memphis, TN 38103
United States
+1 901 529 9607
The specialties piroshki and beef stroganoff, are well prepared. Entrees such as a Chilean fish dish called Escolar and a terrine that layers polenta with wild mushrooms and feta cheese make an eclectic menu. Strudel and napoleons make lush desserts and served in large portions. More than 27 varieties of Vodka and a short wine list is also available. Murals are featured in the main dining room, with Eastern European folk arts and crafts, and samovars once used to prepare tea. There is a small outdoor patio for a pre-dinner drink. Enjoy belly dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.

Jose Gutierrez is the award-winning chef at this flagship restaurant of the Peabody Hotel. He creates imaginative dishes, grounded in traditional French cooking techniques, but with Pacific Rim and Southern influences. The Smoked Pork Tenderloin cooked with a glaze made from Jack Daniels Whiskey (a Tennessee product) and served with grits couscous. Other entrees are based on free-range chicken, black sea bass and guinea fowl. The pastas are excellent as well. The setting is possibly the most elegant in Memphis—velvet curtains, fresh roses on the tables, and gilded mirrors on the walls. Jackets are required for men.

Cielo

Restored Victorian house
679 Adams Avenue
(Between New Orleans and Neely)
Memphis, TN 38105
United States
+1 901 524 1886
This Victorian Village restaurant occupies the Mollie Fontaine House, built in 1886. Salads of endive topped with grilled pineapple and mango and Thai-spiced pork dumplings are outstanding starters. Follow with the salmon filet with lemon-tamarind sauce and a green tomato croquette or the roast duck breast with orange-cinnamon sauce. Other menu items show Caribbean, Cuban and Spanish influences. The wine list is heavy on chardonnays and merlots. There is a full bar with especially good martinis. From the gold-leafed ceiling to the custom covers on the bar stools, this is the epitome of "lux." Even the chargers under the plates are hand-blown glass.

Corky's Barbecue

Sweet, spicy and southern
5259 Poplar Avenue
(at Yates)
Memphis, TN 38119
United States
+1 901 685 9744
http://www.corkysbbq.com/
This exceptionally popular restaurant with a pleasant, cabin-like dining room has been featured in publications such as Bon Appetit, USA Today and The New York Times. The best choice on the menu is the pork shoulder sandwich. A barbecue sandwich in Memphis means dark, chewy shreds of meat that have been smoked for hours, layed out on a bun and topped with cole slaw and a spicy sauce. You can buy the barbecue in packs with all the fixings. Cold beer, on tap or by the bottle, is the drink of choice.

Cottage

Fried green tomatoes
3297 Summer Avenue
Memphis, TN 38122
United States
+1 901 324 4447
This tried-and-true Memphis diner offers ample helpings of down-home Southern cooking. You will not find any cafeteria-style okra here - the type with lots of batter encapsulating a soggy bit of okra - but rather the thin-sliced, lightly floured, pan-fried variety. Other standards include chicken-fried steak, fried green tomatoes (in season) and a mouth-watering selection of homemade pies. An out-of-the-way local favorite thanks to its blue plate lunch specials, the restaurant is inexpensive and often crowded. With its mix of country kitchen decor and local university sports memorabilia, the Cottage is a clean and friendly place, but nothing fancy.

Cozy Corner

Barbecue game hens a specialty
745 North Parkway
(at Manassas)
Memphis, TN 38105
United States
+1 901 527 9158
Do not let the unlikely location put you off: the specialties here are worth it. This place is a Memphis tradition, and you may have to fight the regulars for a table or a seat at the counter. The barbecued Cornish game hens are the specialty here, perfectly cooked and succulent. Other choices include ribs and pork sandwiches. Cozy Corner is indeed cozy, but also casual. Everything is served on paper plates; the plastic cutlery can make eating a bit of a struggle, but fingers are allowed. No smoking is allowed in the restaurant, and no alcoholic beverages are served.

Erika's German Restaurant

Rib-sticking meals
52 South Second Street
(North of Union Avenue)
Memphis, TN 38103
United States
+1 901 526 5522
The menu sticks to the German classics. Dishes such as sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, sausages and sauerkraut bring people back again and again. This is hearty food, great for a cool winter night or for giving a busy professional strength for a long day in the office. This restaurant occupies a large space on South Second Street, near the Peabody Hotel. The large dining room is made cozier by dim lighting and natural-brick walls. The clientele tends to be the people who make Memphis run. Attire is business-suit professional, especially at lunch.

Interstate BBQ

The huge BBQ sandwich here is the favorite choice of many and makes an inexpensive lunch by itself. Beef or pork ribs come with beans, slaw or potato salad. (You can get beef ribs in Memphis, but you are likely to get odd reactions when you order them—to locals, "barbecue" means "pork.") The BBQ spaghetti (pasta with barbecue meat and sauce on top) is served with slaw and bread. With most business being take-out, the dining room is small and functional. If you do choose to eat at the restaurant, you will find that the dress is decidedly casual, as are the table manners—the only way to eat ribs is with your fingers.

Occupying a lovely Victorian house built around 1900 the atmosphere is formal and romantic—polished and gracious—a perfect place for an anniversary celebration or marriage proposal. The French dishes here are lightened with an emphasis on American ingredients. The lobster salad, for example, includes avocado, orange and grapefruit sections. A more traditional French dish is the grilled foie gras with tarragon pan sauce. Entrees include rack of lamb with garlic-mashed potatoes and glazed, roasted pork loin chop. Desserts include a Cappuccino Terrine and Grand Marnier Creme Brulee.

The Dim Sum menu includes Japanese gyoza, steamed dumplings, plus Sesame noodles and Won Tons stuffed with shrimp, crab and vegetables. This small, homey restaurant fits right in the Cooper-Young district. The decorations are sparse but tasteful with a few Chinese paintings and statues hung on the wall. The service is friendly and the wait staff is happy to answer questions about their food.

Located in a restored 1870s building that formerly housed a general store, this restaurant offers a relaxed country setting that suits the menu. Come here for the fried catfish. It is lightly breaded with flour and cornmeal and is served with slightly sweet coleslaw, hush puppies and pickle relish. You do not just get a tiny plastic cup of tartar sauce here; it is brought to the table in a squeeze bottle. The service is friendly, the accents are Southern, and refills on the iced tea are free.

A favorite on the Memphis dining scene, this local joint is the place to go for traditional Italian fare, such as spaghetti and meatballs, pizza and lasagna. The place is so authentic that you half expect a ninety-year-old Italian grandma to come out of the kitchen and give you a big kiss on the cheek. You can also order for steaks and seafood. A favorite with Memphians, this restaurant is where they take visitors for fun atmosphere and food. Technically, the ribs served at the Rendezvous are not barbecue—they are char-grilled with a dry rub of spices. But the slabs of ribs are huge, tender and reasonably priced. Barbecue sandwiches—filled with rich and juicy shreds of pork—as well as portions of both pork and beef ribs all go for less than $10. Antique implements, signs and artifacts of the old South fill the warehouse-like space. The tables are close together, but the noise and crowds are part of the fun.
