While Memphis has had a long and varied history, visitors may get the initial impression that nothing ever happened here that didn't involve Elvis Presley! However, there's much more to experience here. Visitors will find museums, historical sites and exhibits, and cultural activities. Fans of jazz, blues and soul music would be hard-pressed to find a place with more contributions to American music than Memphis, from W.C. Handy to Isaac Hayes and, of course, Elvis.

A popular organized tour of Memphis takes you down the Mississippi on a genuine paddle-wheel boat, just like the ones riverboat gamblers frequented. Cruises on the Memphis Queen line leave from the cobblestone bank at the foot of Monroe. Sunset dinner cruises include dancing on deck to the sounds of a live Dixie-land band.

Gray Line of Memphis offers full-day and half-day tours including the "Blues, Booze and Barbecue Tour" of Beale Street. With ticket prices running $18-55 for adults, you can probably do better by walking the three-block length of Beale on your own. Blues City Tours of Memphis will take you to Graceland or the Mississippi casinos for $15-40.

More unusual options are offered by American Dream Safari. The three-hour Elvis tour is a must for diehard fans who long to see his high school and the store where he bought records. A Delta Day Trip Tour will take you down to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi, for $120 a person or on an overnight blues pilgrimage tour for $110-305 per person. Alternately, you can put together your own look at the city from the suggestions below.
