After years of operating in the middle of a drugstore, Picnics has moved a few blocks down the road. Operating under new ownership has not taken anything away from this homey diner's 50s retro décor: an old jukebox and a Chevy BelAir painted on one wall. The friendly waitresses and the classic diner fare are still attracting customers. Breakfast is hearty and served all day; sandwiches are made with home-roasted meats. Specials include meatloaf, fresh-roasted turkey and spaghetti and meatballs. Frosty shakes, malts, egg creams and root-beer floats are still prepared the old-fashioned way. Desserts are seasonal fruit pies with the ubiquitous Key lime pie included. It feels like going to eat at your grandmother's home. This is a true original in a copycat world. -Mercedes de Marchena Review © 2009, Wcities |
