Indomania

From Sumatra to South Beach
131, 26Th Street
Miami, FL 33140
United States

This elegant but cozy restaurant off Collins Avenue, on a street that ends at the beach, has a small bar with a nice selection of wines and beers, a dozen tables, and an inviting couch that covers one side of the dining area. Indonesian food is a fusion of other Asian, Portuguese and Dutch cuisines, but has a flavor all its own. After all, Indonesia was known as the land of spices! At INDOMANIA the owner/cook has captured this flavor perfectly. The menu, though small, is authentic and includes the famous "rijstafel" or rice table: a mount of white rice surrounded by traditional dishes like chicken in coconut milk, hard boiled egg curry, cucumber pickled in sweet vinegar, fried green beans, beef stew in a sweet molasses-like sauce and a large, crisp shrimp cracker. Do try the "nasi goreng", the best fried rice you have ever tasted. Appetizers are delicious and deserts are light and refreshing. This is cuisine for the adventurous eater that has been cooked for everyone to enjoy. Indomania is worth the visit. -Mercedes de Marchena

Opium Garden

Den of oxygen
136 Collins Avenue
Miami, FL 33139
United States

One of the see-and-be-seen spots of the moment, especially on Wednesday nights, this was originally billed as an oxygen bar/Indonesian restaurant, but in fact the only oxygen is the stuff all around and on a crowded weekend night there is precious little of that. DJ Arnaud Zimmerman plays lounge and pop classics. The restaurant is intimate, with hardwood tables and a mezzanine. The food is Indonesian-inspired, which also includes innumerable creative sushi combinations. The real lure, however, is the scene.
