In a shop that could have been designed by Cruella de Ville, this is the place to find the most eccentric clothes in Via della Spiga. Amongst the leather dresses with feather borders, the black lace and the most original prints, there is a chance of finding some more wearable and truly sparkling clothes. There are lovely, seductive evening tops and fun, printed t-shirts. High prices and polite staff.

Alberta Ferretti offers sophisticated yet simple clothes, in a typically Milanese mix, which has a lot of success. Her clothes are basic essentials but also fun because of their stylish and original designs. The shop is spacious with a floor and decor which is more elaborate than the styles of most of the other shops along the famous Via Montenapoleone. This is a welcome change after a series of aseptic and often too similar atmospheres of the other shops.

This stylist has distinctive, sophisticated taste. His first leather collections were distinguished by the print that made every piece, whether it was a suitcase, bag or wallet, similar to an old-fashioned geographical map. There is now a whole collection that can be admired and bought in the elegant shop in Via Montenapoleone. There are elegant clothes for men and women which are mostly sporty chic clothes for a luxurious leisure time. High prices, but high quality clothes with a combination of classic and modern taste. This is an enormous shopping centre at the gates of Milan with plenty of shops and services. Inside there are the giants such as Ipercop, Media World, Oviesse and Longoni Sport, but also a myriad of shops such as butchers, opticians, book shops, cake shops etc. Among the services on offer are a photography lab, cobblers, laundry, bank, post office, chemists, tobacconists and travel agents. This is a real mini world where you can find everything you need. To restock the body after a hard day's shopping, there are number of self service restaurants, including rotisseries and ice-cream parlours that know how to tempt your taste buds.

A modern myth

What can one say about a boutique that carries the name of a modern day myth, more than any other stylist. The furnishings could be said to have a slightly retro feel, compared to the steel and crystal of the other shops in Milan's 'golden triangle', but nonetheless, they are reassuring in this famous shop. Madame Chanel would certainly have approved this shop as worthy of representing her style. They also sell the classic leather stitched bags and the bottles of No.5 stand up well next to the latest and more modern creations of the house.

Do you remember the gypsy glamour creations and the couture versions of Andalusian dresses which often appeared on the catwalks of this French fashion designer? A large part of these extravagant creations still make an appearance from time to time in the windows of this medium-sized shop which is on the corner of the two most famous streets of Milan's golden shopping district. A few metres away from the Yves Saint-Laurent shop, it is worth visiting both in succession to have a real, if momentary, feeling of being in Paris.

This is a rather fortunate shop on the Via Solferino, seeing as it carries the symbol of the insect that is supposed to bring good luck: the ladybird. Le Coccinelle stocks various accessories and leather or waterproof fabric bags in geometric forms, striking colors and simple lines with asymmetric cuts. This is a new style, re-interpreted from the past and extremely popular among young people.

Corso Buenos Aires

Popular and busy shopping strip
29 Via Vitruvio
Milan, Milan 20100
Italy
http://www.corsobuenosaires.com/
This long shopping strip is the bona fide home of shopping, despite the fact that the quality ranges from good to terrible, so you'll need to leave plenty of time to browse. This is improving, though, especially around Corso Venezia, where more stylish stores have opened up. There are designer names from the fashion world, Italian leatherwear specialists like Pollini and Furla, historic Milanese shops from days gone by, supermarkets and department stores – Standa, with good shoes, and Upim, great for trendy fashions and home goods. Above all, it's the hub for cheap and trendy gear, where you can find hip shoes, clothes and accessories. It is always packed with boisterous youngsters and families, and it is advisable to avoid it during the Christmas holiday period, when the crowds block the streets. It is great fun during the week, however, and you can really pick up some great bargains and cut-price goodies.

Corso Vercelli

Something for everyone
Corso Vercelli
Milan, Milan 20124
Italy
Rather than being an area as such, this is a long road that you can explore on foot ideally only up to the end of Via Marghera, as the road then continues out from the city centre to the edge of the Milanese suburbs. Corso Magenta is part of Milan's traditional shopping district, with its attractive clothes and household stores, jewellers and watchmakers, shoe shops and accessories. Corso Vercelli seems to address both younger customers and families: there are wonderful food stores, department stores, shopping malls, several bars and bakeries. If you continue further along, past Via Belfiore, lined with appealing shop windows, you will arrive at the bustling Via Marghera, full of restaurants and ice-cream parlours as well as high quality boutiques. In keeping with trends in the rest of the city, the quality of the merchandise on sale and the general appearance of the area are constantly improving. Credit card acceptance varies by business.

One thing is certain, the sharp lines made in wood and steel accompanied by classic, luminescent plexiglass panels, are one of the characteristics of this splendid kind of interior architecture often linked to the fashion world. The windows are a veritable bible for the window dressers from all over the world as the clothes and matching accessories are for a multitude of fashion victims. From the beginning of the second half of the 1990's, Gucci has become one of the most successful examples of image restyling of an international fashion house. Caraceni has been a household name amongst the royals for several decades, dressing the kings of Greece, Italy, Wales and many more. Despite its wide geographical influence, the original workshop remains in Rome and is operated by Dominico Caraceni's nephews. Today, the brand is under the flagship of the Campagna Company. Among the branches in Milan, the best known is Mario Caraceni's. You'll find all shapes and sizes here, all with a characteristic 50's style. This shop has been so successful it has recently had to move to a larger site. The fascination of the Far East attracts the Milanese and tourists who wish to buy a gift, furnish their house or give their wardrobe something extra. Here you will find Indian, Afghan and African jewellery, soft but very expensive pashminas, and a variety of original objects including handwritten Japanese and Chinese symbols (not printed!), lacquer trays, handpainted bowls and chopsticks. The clothes are very chic: Chinese and Indian silks, and shantung and velvets for jackets and suits that are very popular with the well-heeled of Milan. Gera and tatami-zori are Japanese slippers, while the evening bags decorated with small pieces of mirror are great fun. If you don't want to spend much, there are fortune bracelets, teapots and Indonesian baskets in all sizes. A real treat are the Nepalese wrapping papers and elegant writing books.
