Precision and elegance under the Big Top, Cirque du Soleil reveals its spectacular and breathtaking aerial stunts and surreal images to Twin Cities audiences with the traveling show, Corteo. Cirque du Soleil has become a world-wide phenomenon and its power to move and amaze young and old is one-of-a-kind. Corteo, meaning "cortege" or funeral procession in Italian, is no exception. Set in a world somewhere between heaven and earth, the two-hour performance follows a clown's emotional journey as he envisions his own funeral taking place. Protected by angels hovering from above, actors, acrobats, aerialists, jugglers and stuntmen combine the deepest of human feelings with the strongest of human abilities as the clown imagines his carnival-like after-death experience. Poignant, comedic and breathtaking, the upbeat performance is a mosaic of drama, off-beat humor, mystery and grace. Powerful drum beats and European-inspired melodies offer a dramatic yet overly-repetitive soundtrack for each perfomer in their pursuit of simple perfection. Swinging from oversized chandeliers, walking upside-down on a tight rope, juggling, flipping, jumping, and bending, the performers cross the line between illusion and reality. Colorful costumes complement the show's wild spirit and add a flair of both beauty and funkiness. Cheesy humor breaks up the performance during various routines, but the show as a whole suffers little from this as its fast pace provides plenty of eye candy. Performed under a giant tent, the circular moving stage allows the audience to see the action from all angles, providing an even more awe-inspiring look into the unfathomable precision, timing and accuracy necessary to achieve the level of performance that has become expected from the world-class Cirque du Soleil. A celebration of human strengths and weaknesses, perfections and flaws, Corteo is both an emotional and physical experience that all ages will enjoy and appreciate.
