Started as a small six-person mime troupe, the Illusion Theater has grown into a powerful and highly regarded force among theater groups in the Upper Midwest. Opening in 1974 on a budget of $400, this theater that calls the Hennepin Center for the Arts home has prospered into a million-dollar-a-year production company. Concentrating on new plays that tackle social, political and personal issues, the Illusion is visited by 65,000 patrons annually. The company sponsors an annual Fresh Ink series featuring works from promising newcomers along with veteran playwrights. Hours and days of performances vary by show.
