Bryant-Lake Bowl

Trendy fun spot
810 West Lake St
Minneapolis, MN 55408
United States
+1 612 825 3737
http://www.bryantlakebowl.com
Located on the fringe of Uptown, the crowd here is trendy, young, and friendly. The eight wooden lanes are virtual antiques dating back to the 1960s, but well maintained. Serious bowlers don't frequent the joint, just those looking for a good time and great food. Not many bowling establishments serve up juicy (not greasy) burgers, deli-style sandwiches, fancy salads, soups and vegetarian delights. There are breakfast burritos, scrambled eggs, sausage and pancakes for those early risers. The beer and wine list is as long as your arm and features only the best domestic and imported names.

Cabaret theater in a bowling alley
810 West Lake St
Minneapolis, MN 55408
United States
+1 612 825 8949
You won't find thought-provoking, highbrow theater here; after all, it's in the same facility as a bowling alley that's more of a hip hangout than a scheduled stop for the pro bowler. Gracing the stage will be anything from rock bands to drag queens strutting their stuff. The performances are high energy, campy and even comic. The crowd is young, laid back and diverse. The food is delicious and fits well with a clubby setting. The menu features vegetarian fare, as well as burgers, sandwiches, salads and soups. It is also legendary as a great morning-after breakfast stop. Show times vary with act. Contact the theater for performances and times. After the show, be sure to catch the action at the Bryant-Lake Bowl and perhaps roll a couple of games.

Dixie's Smokehouse Bar & Grill

Down South in Great Portions
695 Grand Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55105
United States
+1 651 222 7345
This is one of the hottest spots on the Grand Avenue stretch of hot spots. The large round-about bar is fun to sit at – catch a bit of the street scene through large windows or just watch the little train go around the top of the bar. The dining area is split up into varying levels of nooks and alcoves. The menu is righteous southern fare, dominated by fried and barbecued offerings with varying degrees of success. You can get a monstrous combo platter of ribs and chicken or chops, or lighten up with chicken-fried steak, jambalaya, or just plain red beans and rice. A large selection of sandwiches and burgers is offered for the less hearty. Sunday brunch is a traditional affair with smoked meats, cornbread stuffing and more. The bar serves a vast array of domestic and import beers, liqueurs, and cocktails. The large space fills up quickly any night of the week, but especially on the weekends. Parking is scarce - good luck.

The sound of the EL train going over combined with the decor of exposed brick and signs depicting famous Chicago streets make you feel as if you are in one of the Windy City's famous clubs. The pork and beef ribs slathered with Dave's award-winning sauce are messy but a joy to devour by the plateful. Can't get enough? Take home a bucket of ribs for late night snacking. Tucked away in the back of an old building in downtown Minneapolis, this diner is definitely off the beaten track but far from a well-kept secret. The relaxed two-cook operation serves only breakfast and lunch during the week, but from the way they pack them in, most wish the hours were extended. Coffee, juice, rolls, eggs and toast are enjoyed by the early risers but lunch is the real treat. Inexpensive and tasty, lunch specials range from a barbecue pork sandwich piled high on an onion baguette with cole slaw to a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Soups, salads, made-to-order sandwiches or a huge slice of the quiche of the day are other menu highlights. Get there early for lunch.

After moving to its new location and virtually reinventing itself, this stylish spot has proved a success. Instead of bargain basement, the seats are glossy and the booths are velvet-covered. Grunge and punk rockers are replaced with big band jazz, blues and folk music. The somewhat dreary surroundings give way to shiny, silver metallic walls and a sleek appearance. Staying the same, however, is the tasty food and excellent wine list. Burritos, salads, soups, pasta dishes, sandwiches and pizza are tasty for lunch and great to nibble on while listening to music in the evening. In the morning, it's a jolt of espresso, latte or good old strong coffee and a fresh baked pastry.

Lotus is one of the most popular Vietnamese restaurants in the city. The American food here is also quite commendable. The curry chicken is scrumptious and one of the yummiest appetizers here is the cream-cheese puff. The interiors are simple yet charming with flowers used to decorate the tables. Go ahead and soak yourself in simple Vietnamese pleasure.

A Stillwater tradition

Minneapolis, MN 55082
United States
+1 651 439 1100
http://www.lowellinn.com/
This Stillwater landmark has been a dining tradition for more than 70 years. Fortunately, the lackluster menus of the last decade have been spiced up while still retaining the old favorites. Each room has a different menu under Chef Mitch Omer. The George Washington Room features white linens, fine china, crystal and silver service. The Matterhorn room sports a Swiss motif. The fondue (USD60 per person in the Matterhorn) includes appetizers, sherry and Grapes Devonshire for dessert. For the uninitiated, it consists of raw prime beef and coconut-crusted shrimp, which you skewer on a long stick and cook in hot oil at your table. Two bottles of wine are included with this dining experience. In the George Washington room, meals range from USD28-USD35, and include sides of mashed potatoes, vegetables, soup, salad and fruit. Entrees include roast duck breast and pan-fried walleye. For lunch, hot sandwiches, pasta and salads are the rule.

United States
+1 612 825 1572
http://www.lucias.com/
For over a decade, this vivacious Uptown bistro has been one of the area's most appealing restaurants. The modest and reasonably priced menu changes weekly, normally offering two or three appetizers, soup, salad and four entrees. Start with an appetizer of ravioli filled with a puree of orange squash or prosciutto wrapped asparagus with potato gnocchi. Choose an entree of crab cakes with red pepper aioli and vegetable sauté or grilled New York strip steak with morel mushrooms and cabernet mashed potatoes. For dessert try a chocolate tart, caramel topped cheesecake or a simple fruit crisp. The wine list is, of course, quite extensive. The selection of imported beer is exceptional. Brunch is served on the weekends.

Pre-WWII recipes

Minneapolis, MN 55102

This venue features everything that makes diners an American staple. Try an order of the "2s" (2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon or sausage). Besides buttermilk pancakes and potatoes O'Brien, the diner whips up a tasty cauldron of baked beans, Mulligan stew and bean soup, all made from pre-WWII recipes. The burgers are greasy and so are the fries, but they are lip-smacking good. Top it off with a malt made with old-fashioned ice cream.

Tucked away behind Maplewood Mall, this spot's proximity to the usual Mall fare may fool you. From the bamboo-cane chairs to the soft teal and pink color scheme, there's a faint Mediterranean feel. Cloth napkins, carafes of ice water and etched glass partitions add to the already friendly service. The menu is filled with top selections. Choose from steak, chicken and seafood, or a combo of any one of these with BBQ Pork Ribs. Beer battered walleye is a Minnesota favorite.
