If there are any nonbelievers out there saying there isn't world-class cuisine in Minnesota, send them to 112 Eatery and they will eat their words, along with every tasty morsel put in front of them at this popular restaurant. The food here has been praised by publications like, eh hem, Food and Wine magazine and Bon Appetite. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, also lively well into the night, since they serve late. The Lamb Scottadito is simply to die for, and the Nori Encrusted Sirloin w/ Ponzu bursts with flavor, then gently melts in your mouth. They also have a very impressive and diverse wine list, and a broad selection of dessert wines and ports. People come here for the whole dining experience, and it won't disappoint. If you are thinking of eating here, well, you probably are thinking just like everyone else, so make it easy on yourself and make a reservation.

London in downtown Minnesota? Yes, at this authentic British pub. Grab a stool by the fireplace in the downstairs oasis or visit the balcony poolroom. If people-watching is your bag, the window tables offer some of the best gazing in town on Nicollet Mall. As soon as the first hint of spring hits, the patio tables offer an even better view. If you are lucky, you might catch a bit of Musicfest being played outdoors at Orchestra Hall across the street. Do not forget to shop for English souvenirs. Lots of paneling, a beautiful old-world bar, and the World Cup on the "telly" make this feel like a bit of London Towne. The menu features a fine selection of British ales and lagers, burgers, sandwiches and, of course, fish and chips. There is free parking in the ramp next door, on 11th Street; look for the British flags.

Buca di Beppo is the epitome of the big Italian family-style restaurant.A series of cluttered, crowded, boisterous rooms make up this red-sauce dining experience. The tables and booths are cozy, comfortable and you will certainly be elbow to elbow if dining with a group. The portions have over-abundance written all over them to encourage sharing.Regardless of the entrée ordered, it will arrive on a family-size platter heaped with ravioli, chicken cacciatore or good old spaghetti and meatballs. Pass those plates around and sample all the garlicky, Italian American cuisine. A red wine, imported beer or cocktail will help wash it all down.

Dance the night away or converse with friends over a few drinks. Happy hour is big with the after-work crowd as Daddy Rocks offers specials on drinks and appetizers. Weather permitting, the outdoor patio gets crowded but the beer is always ice cold. Grab a burger or sandwich with your favorite beverage and you will have a night to remember.

It is worth the stop

Minneapolis, MN 55402

This bar is not much to look at from the outside, but once inside it is worth the stop. Housed in the WCCO Radio building, this local spot boasts Tiffany-style stain glass along the rear wall of the long, magnificent bar. Stake out a high-backed wooden booth in this popular, after-work watering hole. Juicy burgers, chicken sandwiches and salads dominate the menu. Entrees featuring smoked-on-the-premises turkey and ribs are long-time favorites of the regulars. Most of the items are named after local celebrities and because of the location, do not be surprised if you see some of the local radio talent hoisting a few after their broadcast. The bar serves up the usual mixture of beer, wine, call drinks and soda.

It is hard to keep a preferred spot a secret for long. Once the word gets out, your cozy meeting place is overrun by the masses. Try as they might, the downtown crowd couldn't keep this bar confidential. A favorite of the after-work and after-theater crowd, this small, comfy establishment can become standing room only on many occasions. On warmer days the crowd will spill onto the sidewalk for additional seating and prime people watching. Grab a table or booth for quiet conversation or just settle back and listen to the recorded jazz. The wine and beer list features selections from all over the world. The pasta dishes and appetizers are the specialty of the house but the burgers and sandwiches are also pleasing to the palate.

Tucked away in the back of an old building in downtown Minneapolis, this diner is definitely off the beaten track but far from a well-kept secret. The relaxed two-cook operation serves only breakfast and lunch during the week, but from the way they pack them in, most wish the hours were extended. Coffee, juice, rolls, eggs and toast are enjoyed by the early risers but lunch is the real treat. Inexpensive and tasty, lunch specials range from a barbecue pork sandwich piled high on an onion baguette with cole slaw to a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Soups, salads, made-to-order sandwiches or a huge slice of the quiche of the day are other menu highlights. Get there early for lunch.

The curry chicken is scrumptious and one of the yummiest appetizers here is the cream-cheese puff. The interiors are simple yet charming with flowers used to decorate the tables. If you like crowds, loud music and large, juicy burgers, you must check out this pub. The place really comes alive at night with DJs playing mostly Top 40 hits. The dance floor is busy, but large enough to handle it. The burgers are named for local buildings. The City Center includes bacon, lettuce, tomato and guacamole on a rye bun. The IDS is a half-pounder piled high with pickle, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and onion, enough to satisfy even the largest appetite. Other favorites include the Philly-steak sandwich, French dip and hearty prime-rib sandwich. A large selection of import and domestic beer and liquor are available.

Do not stop after having the house specialties—Sopes Surtidos and Enchilada con Pollo, which are part of the appetizer menu. Go ahead and grab an entree like the Camarone con Salsa Guajillo. Let your stomach muscles stretch a bit more as you dig into the Sea Bass con Chile Ancho-Piquin Salsa. Round it all off with scrumptious desserts like Arroz con Leche or the Flan de Coco. You can leave your parking woes to the valet or find some space in the nearby Target Ramp.

This first class restaurant has enough class not to have a dress code. It was even voted as one of the Top five Steakhouses in the Nation by the Zagat Guide. Housed in the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis Hotel, you can feel comfortable coming here dressed to the nines for your evening at the Orpheum Theatre or dressed in jeans after visiting the Home and Garden Show at the nearby Minneapolis Convention Center. Surroundings are refined, yet completely overshadowed by the food. From the filet mignon to the tender asparagus, each bite is mouth-watering. Vegetables are served family style. Known for steak, the menu does offer many choices of seafood including live Nova Scotia lobster, salmon and yellowfin tuna. The waiters are always there when you need them, but never seem to hover. The wine list includes selections of French, Italian, Australian and Spanish wines priced on average from USD50-USD100.

For over a century, Dayton's was a vibrant part of the upper Midwest retail scene and the favorite department store of residents. With the coming of other department store giants and the Mall of America, Dayton's always faced fierce competition but triumphantly survived. These days, though, it has been deemed more profitable to let Dayton's be known by the more prevalent brand name of Marshall Field's. Not much has changed besides the name. The flagship store in downtown Minneapolis engulfs the entire block on Nicollet Mall between 7th and 8th Streets. The 8th floor auditorium hosts many events. An annual flower show in March typically draws over 100,000 visitors. The animated holiday display routinely attracts 500,000 visitors between Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Eve. From the Marketplace to exquisite women's designer fashions featured in the plush Oval Room, to stylish home furnishings and Oriental rugs, the merchandise offered is unequalled in the area.

Live entertainment combined with a microbrewery. Could you ask for a better place to spend an evening? Among the many bars and theaters occupying the historic Seven Corners area, none have a more nostalgic atmosphere than this place. With its tin ceiling, tile floor and old photographs, you might get a feeling for what old Minneapolis was like. Many of the diverse entrees are spiked with the homemade brew. Try the nachos with ale tomato salsa or lemon chicken and golden ale sauce. The five house brews range from a "hit you between the eyes" stout to a lighthearted golden ale.

Twenty years ago, this European-style restaurant was filled with the warehouse workers from the area. Today, Tthe Monte is still packing the joint, but the clientèle has more white collars than blue. The copper bar is 50 feet long; it is worth the visit just to see it. The menu is big on American fare, with burgers, salads and deli-style sandwiches. The steak sandwich is consistently voted the best in town. Steak, seafood and pasta round out the menu. The appetizers are a meal in themselves, and the desserts yummy. Compliment your meal with a beer, wine, cocktail or soft drink.

If it's too warm for a hot beverage, try an iced tea, iced coffee, soft drink or juice. Sandwiches and chips, soups and salads round out the menu. On warm days, patrons are welcome to take their beverage and food out to the expansive sidewalk patio.

Morton's exceeds anything you might expect and then some. The ambiance is rich with dark cherry wood, white tablecloths and stained glass, giving the place a classy feel. The service is extraordinary and the a la carte menu is top-notch. The lobster is flown in fresh daily and the cuts of beef are huge. Appetizers are not on the minds of most patrons, although shrimp cocktail or scallops in bacon may prepare the taste buds for what awaits. To accompany your New York Strip, Maine lobster or juicy porterhouse, order a large baked potato, asparagus or broccoli with hollandaise sauce or sautéed spinach and mushrooms. Opt for the Godiva hot chocolate cake or Key Lime pie for dessert. With 300 vintages gracing the wine list and dozens of imported and domestic beers, you will be able to find the right beverage to compliment any meal. Cocktails and soft drinks are also available.

When you serve 10,000 steaks a year, it is obvious you are doing something right. The home of the 'Silver Butterknife', this place with its low lights, smoked mirrors and pink linen tablecloths, the ambience is that of a 1950s supper club. Coupled with strolling violinists and efficient service, you know you are in for a first class evening. Start your culinary adventure with an appetizer of hickory-smoked shrimp, wrapped in bacon and served with cocktail sauce. The salads and baked potato are huge, but dwarfed by the 28-ounce Silver Butterknife steak or the four-pound porterhouse. The smaller New York Strip steak or Broiled Walleye will surely satisfy those who are looking for a lighter meal. No one leaves without having a slice of Lemon-Angel Pie: a meringue crust with a tart custard-lemon filling, topped with whipped cream. The wine list is impeccable and the beer selection is first rate. Cocktails and soft drinks are also served.

From 1947 until the mid-1960s, this restaurant was the prime meeting spot for Twin City power brokers. In fact, women were not allowed to dine in the oak-paneled confines unless escorted by a gentleman. Although the restriction ceased during the Kennedy administration, the rich décor of years gone by remains. The comfortable leather chairs, fireplace and red walls still ring of an exclusive men's club. The Mandarin chicken salad smothered with bacon, crispy pea pods and water chestnuts is a staple of the menu. Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and vegetables is real home cooking. The Oak Grill is known for its complimentary, fresh-baked and flaky popovers. Beer, wine, cocktails or soft drinks are served.

With its red leather booths and cherry wood paneled walls, Oceanaire oozes elegance, 1930s supper club-style. The availability of fish dictates what is offered on a daily basis. Most days, diners have a choice of Chilean sea bass, yellow fin tuna, swordfish steak or Chesapeake Bay-style crab cakes. Side dishes are served à la Carte and are large enough to serve four. Appetizers are served home-style and include grilled calamari, oysters and jumbo shrimp cocktail. For dessert, the flaky-crust Key lime pie and brandy-ignited baked Alaska are without equal. Specialty cocktails include 1950s classics like the Pink Lady and Grasshopper.

The Twin Cites has long been a haven for literary pursuits, from the days of F. Scott Fitzgerald to Garrison Keillor. After much anticipation, finally there is a central hub for the many spokes of the literary community, the first center of its kind in the nation. In a thoughtfully renovated warehouse, Open Book houses the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, The Loft Literary Center, Milkweed Editions, and Ruminator Books. The building also offers meeting spaces, Dayton's Performance Hall, and The Coffee Gallery. All this in a great space that was built with books in mind. Notice the main staircase; the white panels are meant to emulate the pages of an open book. The old warehouse can still be seen in some places, as the architects left old stairways, wallpaper, and doorways intact.
