This appealing café has by far the best Greek cuisine in town. A small fountain and flourishing plants create a miniature conservatory. The chalkboard menu always includes inexpensive and imaginative entrees. Start with the luscious scarlet peppers and beets. Follow with a Greek salad of hand-torn romaine dressed with vinaigrette. Braised lamb simmered in a tomato sauce or the souvlaki, chunks of lamb, tomato and onion wrapped in pita, are flawless entrees. For dessert, opt for the kataifi, a syrup-soaked shredded-wheat pastry. Domestic and Greek wine and beer, mineral water, soft drinks and tea are available. Salonica also offers a small take-out deli counter.

The main draw are the dozens of local restaurants offering up a taste of their specialties. You have to buy tickets to purchase food or drinks. Activities range from clothing and jewelry vendors to kiddie carnival rides. Big name music acts play on numerous stages, all free. Hang around for one of the best fireworks shows in the state. Most vendors take credit cards, but the food ticket booths do not.

Early risers come at opening for a quick breakfast of tasty pastries, muffins, coffee and juice. Be prepared for a worthwhile wait at lunch as the crowd lines up for what is perhaps the best gyro in town. Eat like a Greek god, digging into a generous pile of seasoned beef and lamb on a warm pita topped with a cool cucumber-yogurt sauce and a handful of lettuce and tomatoes. Get a garden-fresh tabbouleh to go with the fabulous two-fisted gyro sandwich and you have one delicious, healthy fast-food lunch. Soups, salads and deli sandwiches round out the menu.
