Babani's Kurdish Restaurant

Authentic Kurdish restaurant
544 Saint Peter St
Minneapolis, MN 55102
United States
+1 651 602 9964
Babani's claims to be the first authentic Kurdish restaurant in the United States. The unfamiliar menu items may keep some away, but once you try it, you will definitely come back. The richly aromatic cuisine is prepared using fresh vegetables and organic herbs and spices. The Kurdish chicken soup, dowjic ($3.50 cup/$6.50 bowl), and tabbouleh ($3.50/$6.25) are nicely complimented by naska nan wa paneer ($3.50/$6.95), an addicting, delicious house-baked bread. For those looking for a taste bud-tingling entrée, don't miss the kubay sawar ($11.75), ground beef stuffed in fried wheat dumplings, or chicken tawa, chicken layered with potato, green pepper, onion and dried lemon. Prices are reasonable and portions are enormous.

Barbary Fig

Cozy atmosphere
720 Grand Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55105
United States
+1 651 290 2085
Stepping into the light and airy dining room, you will find a calm escape in this laid back restaurant in a converted home in the heart of bustling Grand Avenue. A crusty French bread with black olives sautéed in olive oil, garlic and cayenne is your appetizer. Skip the usual garden salad; opt for artichoke hearts and goat cheese scattered over a plate of baby greens. Moroccan stews are the highlight of the small, but spicy and exotic menu. The lamb, wild mushrooms, beans and raisins stew is superb. For the vegetarian, it is hard to pass on the bean and lentil stew with apricots and asparagus, served with mint and dill sauce. Dessert can be as simple as a plate of fresh, organic dates or a creme caramel with lots of burnt-sugar syrup. This place is closed on tuesdays.

This is some Lebanese cooking you will not soon forget. Try the falalfel, baba ghanoush (a tangy dip made from eggplant and tahina), kibbe (chewy nuggets of beef or lamb), boorek (egg rolls) shamboorek (meat-stuffed egg rolls) hummus (served as a dip, made from chick peas), grilled chicken and beef or lamb kebabs. Do not rush off after your meal on Friday or Saturday night. Stay and enjoy the restaurant's belly dancers, complete with traditional dress and music.

Fasika has developed a loyal following because of its large portions, excellent prices, and exotic cuisine. The charbroiled beefstrips are a house favorite, served with "Gomen", a mix of collard greens and kale. This kind of food is both healthy and different, and definitely worth a try!

Holy Land Bakery, Grocery and Deli

Attracts a diverse crowd
2513 Central Ave Northeast
Minneapolis, MN 55418
United States
+1 612 781 2627
Make a pilgrimage to this Middle Eastern eatery. There are a few simple tables in the deli area, but most come for take-out or groceries. Home of the self-proclaimed "biggest gyro in town," stuffed with grilled slices of beef and lamb, the pita overflows. The deli menu features vegetarian dishes along with entrees featuring chicken and veggies. The kufta, charbroiled ground-lamb patties served with salad and pita bread, is a definite favorite. The bakery boasts a great selection of Middle Eastern baked goods, such as baklava and honey cake. The grocery carries everything you will need to stock a Lebanese pantry from olives and bulk spices to cheeses and peppers. Juices, coffees, teas and soft drinks are available with your order.

The mall of the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul transforms into a fairground for this annual event. The main draw are the dozens of local restaurants offering up a taste of their specialties. You have to buy tickets to purchase food or drinks. Activities range from clothing and jewelry vendors to kiddie carnival rides. Big name music acts play on numerous stages, all free. Hang around for one of the best fireworks shows in the state. Most vendors take credit cards, but the food ticket booths do not.
